    For my school competition I had to teach English grammar to students and I watched your videos, it was really tough to compete with those other participaters because they were at a high level .. but I won because of learning your techniques.
    Anyway, I'm here because I promised I would thank you here if I won:))
    Thanks a million, I wish you all the best 😍

    Wow, I am a native English speaker, 78 years old, and I do not know all of the parts of sentence. I remember when I was in grade school how I had trouble with past participles and past this and that. I wish this were something that I could use to teach conversational English to some girls in Panama. however, if it’s difficult for me, it’ll be impossible for them. I’m sure you know what you’re talking about, but it’s above me.

    • @TheLanguageHouseTEFL
      @TheLanguageHouseTEFL  7 месяцев назад

      The British Council has it as the past simple. I’d write to them and get this cleared up.
      Speaking of mistakes…
      1. *your verbs
      2. *not Simple Past
      It’s very easy to be critical if someone wants to be. In one sentence, you’ve made more errors than in my 10-minute video.
      Creating value is harder to do. If you check out the description of the video, I mention the typo with the conditional examples :)
      Anyway, thanks for watching 👍

    Hi! I teach in Spain. Your explications are really good and I can see that you can teach confidently. While I agree with your points, CCQ and eliciting is very difficult for me as a lot of the students simply do not pay attention and are very unmotivated. For example I could explain present perfect and seconds later, they are making mistakes on the specific point I have explained. Is there are way to turn this around?

    Having students the ones to make examples using other forms (such as the negative form or the question form) of the same grammar is such a good idea! I need to try this in my next lesson. Thank you!
    P.S. I think for me, what works best in the beginning is to introduce contexts to students first, then function, and finally structure. This could be done by showing them a video or some pictures, then ask them some lead-in questions about the contents of the video or the pictures.
    For example, if the grammar is about present perfect tense, I’d probably show them a story about two or more people with different experiences in certain situations. For instance, John and Kevin go to the same school, and on that day they have to hand over their homework. However, only John did his homework.
    They would have a dialogue that contains the grammar. Maybe Kevin would panic and said “Oh no! I haven’t finished my homework yet! Have you finished it, John?” John would reply “I have. Even Carl has done it, and he’s always the lazy one. Why haven’t you?” Kevin said “I didn’t know we had to hand it over today!”
    From that example, we already cover almost all of the forms/structures of the grammar point we need to teach. Then what we need to do next is to lead them students to notice them, by giving some lead-in questions, CCQ, and highlight the keywords on the board.

    • @annaeferina3796
      @annaeferina3796 8 месяцев назад

      but how would you make all your students listen to this dialog abt makung homework? its point for you but not for them as they don't get what and why you're up to.

    • @ginsan8198
      @ginsan8198 8 месяцев назад

      @@annaeferina3796 It is just an example. Making students focused is an entirely separate technique.

    • @annaeferina3796
      @annaeferina3796 8 месяцев назад

      @ginsan8198 as to me, they work at the same time and stick to e-o

    • @ginsan8198
      @ginsan8198 8 месяцев назад

      @@annaeferina3796 Yes. I am merely giving an example of contextualizing the lesson, or making the lesson contained within a certain theme or tooic in real life situations. In the example above, the theme/topic is "homework". As for the grammar (which is present perfect tense), that is the language focus of the lesson. So we teach the grammar within the framework of that theme/topic. Of course there could be flexibility or modifications along the way. For example, depending on the characteristics of the students, the topic/theme could be changed. However, the idea remains the same, which is to ground the lesson to reality as much as possible.
      As for making students focused on the lesson, we could do multiple techniques. Our voice, body language, seating arrangement, randomizing students to answer a question, etc, those are the techniques we can use to make students focused. Making students pay attention has to do more with our delivery in the classroom.

    • @TheLanguageHouseTEFL

      Generally the concept here is that you want to put students through a guided discovery and by students figuring out the answers on their own, they tend to understand the material better. However, to each their own. There isn’t one way of doing anything correctly. People are different :)

    • @mhenn9896

      Yes, I was thinking the same thing. I’m just realizing that seems to be an actual technique that’s encouraged in pedagogy. Wild. I always thought it was just bad teaching. I see reading about it that the principal is good, but teachers tend to go wayy overboard board, like with the lagging speech. Savvy questions promt and elicit answers, not selective speech impediments.

    why would the students know that the second conditional is used to express hypothetical situations when it is their first time taking it?!! even the word hypothetical would be difficult for them to guess, I don't think they would even know it. They'll probably only guess the word imaginary tho.

    • @TheLanguageHouseTEFL
      @TheLanguageHouseTEFL  Год назад +1

      As long as students know the meaning of the examples given, they will be able to guess. Thus maybe not hypothetically exactly, but ‘not real’ ‘not true’ ‘impossible’ ‘not likely’ - you’d be able to get.
