  • This sonata is a revision and completion of the Sonata in Db major D.567 which was composed in June 1817.
The Eb revision and completion, published in 1829, one year after Schubert's death, as Op. posth. 122, dates from sometime around 1826.
    The four movements are:-
Allegro moderato (moderately fast) in 3/4 time.
Andante molto (very slow) in 2/4.
Menuetto: allegretto (fairly fast) in 3/4.
Allegro moderato (moderately fast) in 6/8.
(It is a great loss to the world that Schubert did not write any operas, even though he is the greatest composer of songs who ever lived!
In this sonata the second movement is a very tragic, bel canto aria for the soprano, expounding the turmoil in her soul; however, the first movement could be viewed as a graceful, care-free dance where the heroine is enjoying life without any inward troubles. The third could be viewed as the heroine dancing provocatively, throwing caution to the wind. The fourth finds her full of spirit having lost all her fears and sorrow, ending at peace with the world! I am sure a librettist could make a very good story-line out of the mood of each of the movements!)
    GlynGlynn, alias GB, realiser.
