I just got my dumbek drum yesterday and I’m starting to learn online. So glad I stumbled on your channel. As a middle eastern woman I got so much backlash for buying the drum so I’m glad to find a talented woman to teach me!

Enjoy your practice. You own your music, you are your music. Music is for all, and whoever judges you for it, they didn't understand music at all

I'm right handed but I prefer to play it on the right side. I've tried to switch over and over but always end up putting it back on the right

Of course you can hold it however you like, there are parts of Africa where they are played like that, I have a djembe, and I play it like a tonbak, and I have never been arrested for it so far. ;-)
These drums have travelled across half of the world and back, there are no hard lines between the types - it's similar to swords, there are zweihanders, falchions, scimitars, schiavonnas, katzbalgers, claymores, but if you lived back then, they were called just "swords" - it's similar with drums. People did not always have internet to learn from each other across half of the world, they saw something, liked it, adopted it, and changed it to their style, mood and preferences.
The theory is always grey and lifeless compared to the practice. Just try developing your own style, you may amaze people all around the world, and who knows, maybe they will start to mimic you! ;-)
