That is something you could try and see if you like it better. I like to have a little "wiggle room" to do my shaping and firm it up as I go along. If it is rolled super tight to begin with but the roll wasn't as even or quite the right shape, there is less opportunity to fix the shaping.

Don’t you think if you rolled the core tighter it would require less felting or poking cause as you said it needed more felting to firm it up
