    Hi I live in Northern Kentucky. Was wondering how I can keep woodpeckers away from my bat house or possibly a coating that would protect against them. I have a collony sized bat house and we have lots of woodpeckers about our community.

    whats to stop owls and birds of prey sitting in any other nearby structure when installing? I can fit on my house but the owl can just sit on any of the 30 trees near my house!

    Could have explained a bit more about the reason for the color and that it really doesn't matter is the sun doesn't hit it.

    Very helpful, thank you. I'm in South-east Texas and have been considering a bat house for the mosquitoes, but is it enough to just build a house and set it up, or do you need to do something to attract the bats, like a certain scent or something? Or do they just eventually find the house?
    Also, if you mount the bat house on your home, where I'm at we have pesky red wasps that are vicious, that love to live in the cracks around the home. Will they take over the bat house, or do bat's eat those things too?

      In short No. Just put up the Bat house. In long, some people report better success in attracting bats if they spread bat guano or dirt on the inside of it. There is also reported better success in bat houses that have been up for a year or two years instead of one.

    So is putting a bat box 20ft+ up a tree wrong?

      She said no trees...

    • @alexreid4131
      @alexreid4131 Год назад +1

      @@michaeldamiani1518 yeah I didn’t really word my question properly. We have trees here that go way high without any branches. So 20+ feet on one of those should be fine. I now actually make and sell three and four chamber bat boxes to people in my area so I’ve learned a lot since three years ago. And there’s no way I’d sell someone the type of bat box she is holding in this video. Much of the information in this is spot on though.

      derrick felix South, where it gets sunshine it's the warmth they like. From what I have seen.

    • @cryptickcryptick2241
      @cryptickcryptick2241 3 года назад +1

      I believe that east is preferred. My understanding of the logic is this, bats want the heat in the morning when it is chilly. If the box faces east it gets warm when the air is cold. By mid day, air has warmed up, and the bat box is warmed up, then it needs less sun to stay warm. An east facing bat house will still get some sun in the afternoon. All bat houses typically maintain this heat into the evening, when the bats go fly. Most bat houses also have multiple compartments. One well ventilated for when it is too hot, one designed to contain heat when it is too cold. The bat chooses where to hang based on the temperature.

    • @cryptickcryptick2241
      @cryptickcryptick2241 3 года назад

      I should also add, that some research indicates that it is best to place two or three bat houses in the same area pointed in multiple directions. Bats will move to from one house to another. There is a lot we don't yet know about bats. This moving from house to house may be an attempt to stay comfortable at the proper temperature. It may also be an attempt to avoid mites, moving to a clean house and letting them die off. It may be because of other reasons that we really don't understand yet. Bats can easily roost in a different place every night, so in short at the present it is best believed it is easiest to just put up a couple of houses for the most success.

    Do I need to stain the interior as well?

    • @cryptickcryptick2241
      @cryptickcryptick2241 3 года назад +1

      I believe the answer to that is NO. The main reason for staining the outside of a bat house is to change the color which effects solar heat gain. Painting or staining also helps to preserve the wood making it last longer, but this is not as much as an issue inside the bat house as it does not receive rain.

    • @TheOrcasRule

      They need to be A LOT bigger than what she's holding. Recommended minimum 24 inch tall by 14 inch wide, and 3 chambers to be very effective.

  • @TheOrcasRule
    @TheOrcasRule 4 года назад

    That bat house is way too small to actually attract bats, based on everything on the actual website of this very same organization, which recommends a minimum of 24 tall and 14 wide. Is the one you're holding in this video just a small model for some other purpose?

    • @TheOrcasRule
      @TheOrcasRule 4 года назад

      My bad. 20 inches is the min. height. Still, the house in this video is very, very small, and probably would not attract bats.

    • @cmdrmike9958

    That box is WAY too small. MINIMUM size is 16" wide and 24" tall to give them thermal protection.
