I actually bought another dreamcast on ebay with Shenmue and Soul Caliber just so I could re-experience part of gaming history. I have since realized my phone will run a solid Dreamcast emulator and provides me with better graphics and portability but its still super cool to have the actual system. Keep it alive! ;)
7:31 Adam, heres a quick tip for getting instructions out easily without damaging them. Open the case fully and lay it down flat, then grab the manual from the stapled side, lift it up slightly and pull it out towards the CD holder part.
I played the original "Flashback" game back in the early 90's and loved it. When the sequel came out, I loved it. I still have this game and have beaten it more than once; one of my all-time favorites!
Watching this review of Fade to Black Flashback reminds me of some of the computer games I used to play back in the early 90's on a 386/486 desktop computer. Definitely a Flashback. It's amazing that the SEGA Dreamcast is still getting games released for it.
I am a huge fan of the the Flashback series and I have this game on the PS1. Back in the day when this game came out it was hyped. It was actually more polygonal on the PC before being ported to the PS1. There is a big misconception that Flashback is the sequel to Out of This World however the only thing they have in common aside from the gameplay mechanics was the relationship with French software developer Delphine Software. I think its great that this has come to Dreamcast although from a purist's perspective I gotta say that new case artwork is horrendous. The original artwork is iconic and should have been used as well as Fade To Black is very much its own game, Flashback is not part of the title. Out of this World is my favourite game of all time and Flashback as well as Fade to Black are all time classic's of the genre. The guy who is porting these titles obviously has great taste in games.
Out of this World was made by 1 man.. its truly impressive what he was able to do with the art design and ambient music. As for Fade to Black its actually pretty good. One thing to note is that Adam states this is the pc port however the pc port was more polygonal. This actually appears to be the PS1 port as evident by the main character (Conrad's) smooth appearance. Google the pc version and you will see what I mean.
Actually...back in the day a guy called "taxman" made a homebrew sonic game for the Dreamcast using the WinCE libraries. He was shunned by the homebrew community for using WinCE and stopped working on it. "Retro Sonic" or "Open Sonic" I don't remember exactly its been a while. He currently works with Sega making 2d sonic stuff, android ports and mania. :-)
@Your Local Gamer Grill Vienna Actually a handful at least. Open Sonic, Sonic Robo Blast, Retro Sonic, and somebody was recently porting over the android version of Sonic CD, You can search them all up for Dreamcast but adding Dreamcast in the name of the game.
@@BFKAnthony817 Would be cool to have a new Sonic on DC but really, the Saturn deserves a Sonic more. What I would do for a port of Sonic mania to Saturn with pressed disc, manual and box.
I put one of.the.flashbacks isos into my dreamcast. It perma quieted my fans and disc drive. Thought it broke it but it still runs everything fine...just now in stealth mode.
This game is in need of a remake... I played it back when it was new. It was great then but I do not think I could go back to that time analog sticks did not exist... no idea if the PC version aged better because of mouse and keyboard.
flashback is good, but fade to black is a mess. it was the era of early 3D when 2d franchises tried to go 3D. some did it ok, some failed miserably. I played it a bit on PC in the 90s and I couldn't finish it.
To someone who has played the PC original, this looks like a port with a lot of antialising, the effect is too much, even the letters are difficult to read. However, releasing something for DreamCast in 2021 is impressive!
I loved this game on PSX, but it is hard as hell. I can usually get about halfway through the game before getting a headache. Really wish someone would remake this game with better controls and graphics!!
It would be awesome if JoshProd or Duranik could make a sequel to the NES classic Life Force by Konami. 2 player local co-op with at least 10 levels. Gamer's are overdue for a sequel to one of the NES's favorite shoot'em ups from that era but with upgraded graphics, a 2D/3D game engine, and upgraded game play would be appreciated.
Ah I can remember that game. Played the ps1 demo back then in the 90s. Never liked it. Was trash compared to other games available on the ps1. The Dreamcast Version looks a bit better though. Impressive work and always nice to see new Dreamcast games in 2019
@@AdamKoralik I am to Adam. I would like if somehow another controler comes out in the future that has the rumble pack integrated into the controller freeing up one port. I don't know how that would work but I can't see why the manufacture didn't find a work around for that.
I agree with alot of the other comments it's an odd choice of game to release for the Dreamcast. Sure it's a nice blast of nostalgia but it doesn't take long to remind you of its awkward as hell controls. I suppose you can't be too harsh on the devs, this was one of those early 3D games with a genre without established rules, was a year ahead of Tomb Raider and Mario 64. Much preferred Flashback as a kid, I'd recommend playing that over Fade to Black!
I bought this game in 1996. The graphics were impressive and looked great in magazines. Then played it for few hours and the gameplay was just not there. A typical early 3D game with poor gameplay and all focus put on the visual side and cutscenes. The disappointment was strong.
Early 3D games have dated worse than any generation of games before or since, it seems. Since everything was new and untested, you had a lot of games with experimental control schemes and camera tricks that absolutely infuriate modern gamers.
@@Agamemnon2 Yeah you nailed it; they mostly age poorly due to unintuitive controls esp. in regards to the camera. Also they lost the comic/painterly style that typified 16-bit graphics. Low polygon graphics on a CRT just look like trash. Which is interesting because I think a smoother, more polished low-poly look is a significant trend in retro "nostalgia" indie games.
Played fade to black back in the day on PS1 and PC. But looking at your game play it seems to be playing a bit quicker than on the PS1 and PC, walking, jumping, everything is going faster than it should be, which will make it harder to control.
looks like they just ported it and didnt update the graphics. technically he could port this to the sega saturn since its written in the same code im assuming unless he did a custom assembly?
Duh too much comments about controls, in 97 was named the best action PC game. Videogames were made like that, you had to learn how to move your character, same for 2D games, because the developers loved to experiment. Today, action games are all the same.
So watching you play this. It seems to have better framerate then the PS1 game, and less jaggies even without the mcable. I think I like the menus on the PS1 more. And some of the character textures. But the environment textures look a bit better on the dreamcast version
I played it on PC but it was horrible and unplayable because of the controls. flashback was awesome, I loved it, but fade to black was a disappointment.
