- Phil (on loan from Genesis) and John were touring with jazz-rockers Brand X when they sat down with us in Santa Monica for some stories and fun on Friday 9/21/79.
RIP John Goodsall ... I played with him for several years in L.A.
I didn't know he had died. Sad. I saw them at the Marquee and also at Ronnie Scott's. Morris Pert was the percussionist. I just remembered that Ramsey Lewis was in the audience at Ronnie's.
I love Brand X. Own about 7 or 8 of their cd's! Every drummer they ever had was top notch in his own way.
Jpeterson7 i only like Phil.
@@SPAZZOID100 bummer for you. You don't even get a whole album
@@SPAZZOID100 so u will like my channel :)
@@SPAZZOID100 😥😢😭
I love it phil with hair? What amazing talent does this band have? Very talented band.
I giggled at the hair.. wondering is it his or did he give a top piece a try.. bless... legend...❤❤
Luckily I was at one of the SF shows days before this and sat right in front of Phil. I'll never forget it!
Brand X so far ahead of their time! Their debut Album, “Unorthodox Behavior” says it all!! I saw them perform at the Barrel Head in western NY in 1977 and they blew the roof of the place!! Still one of my finest moments of live Jazz/Rock EVER!! What a performance by Goodsall and Colins-!- even Morris Pert was outstanding. Such great memories. 😎🥁
Ron, just saw Brand x last night here in Cincinnati. Had a great time. They sounded great. Percy is a rock!
Percy Jones is the finest bass player on Planet Earth.
Fav band of all time
Saw the '79 Brand X show in Philly. Great stuff.
nice any footage, picture or audio of it?
John was one of the underrated fusion guitarists of the era and doesn't get the acknowledgement he deserves.
Yep! Like Mick Hutchinson (Clark Hutchinson)!
Some fans have laid it on Genesis that Collins didn't stay in Brand X - but he probably would have preferred to stick with them if it hadn't been for his solo career. He kept his hand in the game until around the time Face Value was released.
Nah he did what he wanted. No mysterious force made him do anything.
Collins continued to make great, varied music long after Face Value. It may have been a little harder to find amidst all the pop stuff, but it was there. And live, he was always phenomenal.
thanks so much for sharing this. I was a huge fan of Brand X all through my teens in the 70s but I didnt and couldn't have had access to any of the clips of all the stuff with brand X with Phil Collins on drums back in the 70s england. Because all we had video wise was The Old Grey Whistle test. And BX hardly ever got on there. Prog and Jazz Rock weren't OGWT or even Radio fodder.
John is quite the man. I am honored to know him.
I enjoy seeing stuff like this, but it also makes me sad to realise John is gone and Phil cannot play anymore.
Makes me feel extremely mortal.
I love Brand X.
Great to see these reviews and I do love everything Brand X did. Really great band regardless of the line up.
RIP John Goodsall
When Phil was a Super Percussionist..!! Brand X was his part time band and Genesis his full time gig.
Saw those Frisco shows..both of them..Fantastique
Really great stuff! thanks for posting!! Long live the BRAND!!!
Most (ignornant)people underrate Phil as just a Singer. Primary he is a talended drummer in Brand X and (the early) Genenis).
Phil couldn’t sing then and he certainly can’t sing now! He was a fair drummer though.
@@winstonschwarz1636 I recommend you get your hearing checked
I totally agree with you Ronald. One of my closest friends and music collaborators cringes every time the name Phil Collins is mentioned. He never gives him a chance based on his awareness of the more pop years with Philip Bailey , 80’s Genesis and even the Tarzan soundtrack. Which to me is great music too, definitely more polished and accesible but good music none the less. Phil was a monster player during those early Genesis years. Having albums like Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Trick of the Tail on your musical resume should definitely show listeners how well rounded of a musician Phil Collins was.
Even on Flaming Youth's lone album he stood out as the best singer in the band.
Monster drummer. And he could sing. Don’t hear the haters.
when people were slim
Thankss for this! Never seen any interviews about them before.
Loving this!
Outstanding !!
22:41 Thru These Walls. Pervy Phil!😂😅🤣
Ron! Long time no talk to! Brand x is coming here to Cincinnati. December 6th. Only John goodsall Percy Jones left but it will be fun for Old times sake!
Wouldn't it have been something if Goodsall played with Genesis, instead of Darryl?
0:30 I expected him to say podcast...how conditioned we have become. Good interview.
Interesting interview! Although this looks like something from a Wes Anderson movie.
Ah! That was fantastic!
PC with long hair and a beard! R.I.P. JG ... Never enough Brand X music.
I'm always amazed to see how unpolished some of these 70s musicians are. Of course, Brand X and John Goodsall didn't make it big, but Phil, of course, was huge in the 80s. Also, I had no idea that Phil had to audition for Brand X. I would have thought it was more just a matter of him finding time.
I also have no idea what The Boffomundo Show is.
Thanks Nickipedia!
Nice they got along back in the day peaceful
Some of this is SOOO funny!!
Great post, Thanks!
Ótima postagem, Obrigado!!
I had know idea Phil was in the band i had a few alps but dudnt play any mind who was who wow still learning as yep great sound as well as how they put stuff together this is great
As John said "This is before Phil ran off and joined that disco band".
Atomic Rooster. . Best lineup was with Ric Parnell & Johnn Goodsall. . John is an awesome blues guitarist.
Who won the FA cup? Great question Phil. Besides music you are a good football player.
🎸💔🎸💔🎸 John Godsall RIP
Did ANYONE see the Boffomundo show when it originally aired???? ANYONE????
Yes. The interviewers' mom.
@@u2be1201: And their grandmothers--maybe. :)
She didn't because we didn't get cable in 1979!
"I met this band with enormous tits which was Brand X"! Love as always Phil. .........Genesis, probably the best band in the world, ever.
What band did the theme song? Sounds kind of like Bruford? Arti e Mestieri an Italian Prog/Fusion band.
Casey Van yeah I’m interested in this as well. Sounds kinda like mahavishnu to me
Arti & Mestieri - Nove lune dopo
Thanks for posting this! Does anyone know what music was used for the credits sequences? It sounds intriguing.
All ears ....no bullshit
So shortly before Phil’s metamorphosis
I see where you are going, but no, that is too easy. Maybe you can do better.
Rondo2ooo Before he shaved the beard, we’ll put it that way.
He probably wrote In The Air Tonight within months of this.
probably already did record demo's for face value by this time, sept '79, and as Phill says here, Genesis will start for a new album that became Duke. .
He'd probably just recorded with Jon Martyn too.
Anyone know whats the name of the instrumental at the beginning?? Thank you for posting the interview.
Arti & Mesteri - Mescal. Awesome tune!
@@samuelward1148 Actually, the track seems to be called "Nove lune dopo".
Studied bovva boys act. Very 79.
Who does the theme for this show?
Gay Jazz 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Phil is epic!!
The interviewers are really struggling with actually interviewing!
terrible interviewers
Does anybody know the name/ band who plays the theme tune for the Boffomundo shows?
Arti e Mestieri an Italian Prog/Fusion band.
Thanks!
can't wait to hear Phil's "gay-disco" album
kingcrim ????????
Genesis.John's longstanding joke
The stoned artist look
This is so odd…it feels like a modern spoof but its real…
These interviewers were awkward but had a couple of interesting questions.
I got high with Phil and John just before the show. Great fun!
Yes lots of awkward line of questions. Disco? Grandizing Toto in front of them. How should they respond to that? Releasing a 45 single? Very cringy. Everything has its place but we are talking to Brand X here. Maybe that's why John Goodsall looked disinterested in a lot of the conversation.
How could they refrain from punching them square in the face, their self importance in full display. Those that can, do, those that can’t, do interviews.
@@TheBoffomundoShow I got all the way down to your comment here, almost at the end, tinking that all of these guys sound like they were baked. Makes for a very long and boring interview. I really don't know how anyone could consider PC as a great musician based on his conversation abilities here. All he ever does is talk about his contribution to anything that anyone will listen to. It's like he's reading the WIKI article in abstract.
R.I.P John Goodsall .⁷⁷9⁰
😪😪😪 rip john...
Intro is Nove Lune Dopo by Arti e Mestieri. ruclips.net/video/ee9rkldjR3Q/видео.html
Did someone laugh when he said toto lmao
Phil and John look like two homeless guys...
Or like any 70's musician 😁
Yeah, but two cool homeless guys
I couldn't be in a room with John Goodsall for too long. Damn that guy doesn't add much to the show!
Mick Sowden John is obviously the ideal guitarist, keeps his mouth shut !
Great fellow who enjoyed a laugh though. We played & or hung out a fair few times. Really enthusiastic about music and good company.
Great video quality; thank you.
Thank you. I had the original 3/4 Umatic videos digitally copied before they further deteriorated.
