Ever wondered how a kraken would impact a fantasy city's fishing and trade routes? What parallels can we draw between kraken attacks and the Allied response to German U-Boats in WWII? Could convoys, naval escorts, and enchanted ballista be enough to counter such a monstrous threat? How might coastal economies adapt and survive in the face of such terror? Join Baron de Ropp as he delves into the Geopolitics of the Kraken and explores the potential strategies and repercussions of confronting a kraken. Игры
The u-boat comparison is actually genius.
I suddenly wonder if it's possible to run a Theros campaign that's a cross between The Argonautica and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
@@michaelbryant3640Oh. Mein. God. Do it
Came here to say just this
Lauded as a hero after performing some high-profile, exciting deed that lead to being seen as a savior to the local economy and the working class, all while knowing your actions also allow the merchant fleets to keep their cargo holds and coffers full, there's only one thing to do next:
Run for Public Office.
Or... Now hear me out on this. You could use your naval power to take all those cargo holds for yourself.
my character in such a scenario would definitely be out to rule the world, but always my goal as a player recently
8 months!, glad you’re back mate
A more interesting question, to my mind, is why the kraken (INT: 22, WIS: 18, CHR: 20) wants to destroy merchant ships? Such a beast could be a king-maker, siding with one side or another in any naval conflict. Or it could just roam from coast-to-coast demanding tribute. But that's penny-ante stuff. This is a beast bred to fight GODS! It's going to make literal, economic, and political waves wherever it goes, and if it wants something, everyone's gonna know about it.
So what the heck would such a monstrosity desire?
Chicks and cars.
That's a *really* good question. Are we talking about *a* kraken or *the* Kraken? A unique creature with an entirely superhuman mind must surely have something to do other than commerce raiding. Might just be a hobby I suppose.
The Kraken is a Privateer.
It wants to fight gods, duh
Make it Cthulhu and the answers become clear. It desires unearthly things 🦑
My character is literally from a place where the nearest town is Krakeport and it's on the Gulf of Krakens. I'm sending this directly to my DM!
I have never wanted to do a campaign with a kraken more than I have now. Excellent video!
He’s back!
Best DnD content on youtube for DMs! Love your stuff, Baron! Thanks man!
In the annals of history....
Whoever rules the seas rules the world until the next guy knocks them off the waves.
Carthage, Rome, Spain, British, America are just the highlights.
Excellent and fun video!
America still rules the seas😂
I think that honestly, since it slumbers for most of the time, then wakes up, summons giant storms with its mere presence, and advances upon a city, smashing up the docks and flooding the rest of it before retreating into the ocean to do it again with little to no warning in a few months/years, a local kraken could also be compared to living somewhere with hurricanes.
You'd probably want to learn its off seasons and work around those, build levies and storm shelters... treat it as a force of nature to survive just as much as a monster to fight.
And now, we sit and wait for the next geopolitics epsiode.
Seriously, I've learned more about how nations, governments etc here than I did in school.
almost like schools aren't here to teach us how the world works
I've been working on a PhD in Geopolitics for the past 6 years, and I STILL come out of Baron's videos feeling like my mind just got blown.
He’s back! We were one tweed clad dork short for far too long.
Grats on the success of Green Dragon Fest!
Welcome back Baron, we have been waiting
Hell yeah, wizard marines!
Im so glad to see a new post! Thanks so much!
Yes finally get some of that sweet sweet audible chocolate!
You're back!!! Nice to see you and great video!!!
Those closing words are, minus the junks thing, is great words to always spark future adventures of faction level play.
Amazingly insightful, as always. Top-tier content in bite-size chunks. This is an entire campaign in less than 10 minutes that feels real.
Several historical inaccuracies:
- It was not only the British navy that combatted the U-boat threat but the American, Canadian and later Brazilian navies as well.
- World Trade Organization, not World Trade Order. ;)
- All belligerents' navies other than the U.S. were in tatters by the end of WW2? Canadian navy became the 4th largest in the world by the end of the war, British navy was almost double in terms of tonnage than what it started with, and the Soviet navy - though battered, was largely intact.
But back to the Kraken, I think you miss a few very important things about the Kraken in D&D (3rd edition onward specifically). Not only is it intelligent, not only is it a powerful caster, it can also control the weather itself AND command the hearts and minds of men! It does not NEED to hunt the convoy when it can summon a storm (at night for example), dash every ship against the rocks and then feast and loot at will. Or, it can work through its proxies, placing its cultist followers into key positions to either sabotage the convoys or take control of the governments of coastal cities. And finally, you know what would be WAY cheaper than outfitting an entire fleet, marines, wizards, griffin riders, etc. for any polity? Negotiating with the kraken!
"Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute"
Kraken: Speed 60'. Warship: Speed 35' (and 15' into the wind). A Kraken is going to attack from directly below, not the surface--intelligence 22.
That's why they brought 10 warships. Kraken grabs one and gets harpooned by the 2-4 others nearby. Now it's fighting near the surface.
absolutely kick ass. history and geopolitics need to be taught like this. so engaging.
Great video! Rock on, brother! Great suit & tie, BTW.
this is awesome-glad to have you back, Baron!
I thought we'd lost you forever. What a marvelous day!!
Extremely well thought out. My new favorite video on your channel!
Good to have you back, these videos are awesome
Your insight into the mission of the US Navy is important. What most folks don't know is that the PRIMARY mission of the Navy is to keep the sea lanes open for commerce. Great extrapolation of what the sea power would become.
Wake up bae , Baron just posted !!!
You're single.
Bump
About dang time! 🍾
The world of One Piece offers a vision of how such world could look like:
With most of the world underwater and huge water beasts restricting travel, most people spend their whole lives on their home island, each island their own country, all under a single World Government and their strongest tool- Navy, which has a huge armada of ships that are masked from sea beasts and posses firepower to potentially destroy entire countries, but also keeping an image of peacekeepers and heroes.
Once Piece has the advantage of individuals being able to get strong enough to destroy countries single handedly
@@epicazerothOne Piece does have people who can destroy countries and probably more of them, as a swordsman with enough power and skill could destroy a country in a way a fighter isn't going to. But honestly when a spellcaster gets to 9th lv Spells they can also destroy a country just might be a bit more work
I'm glad you're back!!!
I saved one of your vids to my "watch later playlist", and only just now watched it. I'm beyond happy that you found your way into Kraken Week, and that you seem to be doing well.
Have a great day
Great to see another upload from your channel!
The Baron takes a few months of, then comes back strong with a bloody bonza video of epic quality
Another banger from the Baron! Love seeing you back at it!
Amazing video, great that your making content again. Your videos are honestly some of the most entertaining and useful dnd videos I have ever come across and they really help me look more realistically at dnd. Thanks! :)
So great to have you back with Geopolitics in the video description. ❤
Fantastic stuff. Welcome back!
Good to have you back!
Welcome back.
You forgot to mention all of the Ruby Gillman-syle teenage Krakens living among the populace of the sea-side towns. Where do they fit in?
Good to have you back Baron!
Glad to see you're back! Nailed it with this video
This is the one Kraken Week video I wanted.
Love the Economics of Fantasy settings! Great video.
Great video. One thing you didn't mention is the role of religion in the Kraken scenario. There are gods of the sea (Umberlee and Valkur for example). Priests of those faiths would be a serious boon in dealing with an active and belligerent kraken in a costal region.
It is so great to see you making videos again. This video has been helpful for reasons other than intended. I’m doing a lower magic. Bronze Age setting. You just explained why seafaring trade is more rare for my setting. There aren’t that many mages working together for governments and guilds to work together like that. Thanks a lot
You're back! Yay!
Well done, Baron. Excellent as always.
glad to see more of your geopolitic insight
You’re back!!!
Great video, I was going to do a similar video on discussing Kraken hunting and how it would be done. You just happened to go the same route I would have by looking through the lenses of WW2 submarine hunting.
The Baron returns!
That was one of your best assessments 👏
Great! Super fun ideas!
This was really well done.
Thanks 👍👍
Another possibility is that a sentient kraken would end up extorting protection money from threatened cities and end up like an underwater mob boss running a racket over the whole coast.
You basically have exactly that with the Kraken society in the forgotten Realms, and their Kraken master, Slarkrethel, is also a 20th level wizard! Ridiculously powerful.
@@Miggy19779 Cool, great minds think alike!
I love these videos!!!! Baron is the bomb!
Great video! Very clear analogy to the naval aspect of WWII! I think I can use some of this for my Star Trek Adventures campaign. Thank you very much!
I'm always wondering how this works when we realize that the Kraken itself, as statted, is more intelligent than pretty much everyone. How does it react when it realizes what it's facing?
Great video!
Oh hey, I was just wondering when we'd get the next video...
Your videos are absolutely amazing. Every. Single. One.
Very cool video 👍
Thank you, love your videos
""The most comparable example we have for how a society would react to the presence of a Kraken would be the Allied response to German U-boat wolfpacks during World War 2."
What a fucking baller sentence.
Kraken sees a lone merchant vessel: "Oooh, a snack."
Kraken sees a convoy of ships: "Oooh, a buffet."
Finally, some good food
I Love ALL Dungeon Masterpiece videos!
I enjoy all of Dungeon Masterpiece videos
Great video. I'm running a Starfinder campaign but now I think I need a Space Kraken...
This analysis is most awesome!
Wow....your back
Very inspiring!
Nice to see another geopolitics video!
The powerful navy is basically how House Lyrandar came about in my Eberron. You really see how they could even be in league with the Krakens to maintain their monopoly on the shipping lanes.
Welcome back!
Good job! Love this take on making medieval fantasy more realistic.
awesome video! One of the best creators In the TTRPG space, glad you're back
Love it. More more more.
HE RETURNS
Nice!! Baron i missed your content you need to make more good sire please and thank you 😂
There is another historical example that I know of that is similar to the Kraken attack and its medieval. The whale Porphyrios plagued the Byzantine empire during the time of Justinian and attempts to rid the whale proved ineffective. He attacked local ships and even Byzantium itself from time to time over the course of 50 years. It is said the whale beached itself when trying to chase a pod of dolphins.
Another great topic.
I have to thank Kraken week for putting this in my feed. I love fantasy geopolitics.
this is a great example on how to make any fantasy world geopolitically coherent
fantastic!
Ahh, excellent! I was hoping for more of this content.
Most large sea creatures in my world are only a credible threat to shipping when in heat, but this should be a fascinating video regardless.
That's a summer tan if I've ever seen one.
Deep D&D is the best D&D. Very fair assessment of what happened post-WW2. Also sent me to look up what mangonels were, in case Joe Manganiello's last name was etymologically related. Unfortunately it just means truncheon, which I suppose is D&D as well ;)
very interesting
Not to mention that once the humanoid civs figure out how to easily take them out, they'd be regularly hunted for meat and glory I'd think.
However this doesn't apply to the Cthuluian type of Kraken who are primordials amongst the aboleth with almost god like powers such as the ability to alter the weather and create mass hysteria while also spawning sahuagin from an alternative deep ocean plane. Tho I like to think that these types aren't from Toril and that the standard block stat version are the lesser krakens who've been left behind.
When a coastal town decides that a virgin sacrifice is needed to appease the sea monster and the politicking to decide which family will shoulder this burden.
Really fascinating look into this geopolitical climate! Definitely learned a lot, and good things to think about if introducing something as massive as a kraken into my world (or adjacent type monster). One question - what do you think is a reasonable timeline for most of those front-loaded actions? i.e. how fast would merchant companies be able to assemble convoys, and / or outfit their ships with weaponry to start pushing back against the kraken? A few weeks? Months?
Grabbing and arming sailors and/or adventurers wouldn't take all that long, but obviously there would be financial implications with having to pause *some* trade to have ships outfitted with ballistae and the like, which would account for some of the increase in overall costs you mentioned.
I enjoy your geo politic videos. Thankyou l.
First Kraken Week content worth watching
EPIC VIDEO
Dope campaign concept
What about the economy surrounding the presence of the Kraken? With the Kraken being a threat, there would be an entire economy presence around the scarcity of goods due to the Kraken, high pay for sailors willing to sale the dangerous seas and weaponry and defenses setup to defend against the threat. These markets would be upheaved instantly as goods that used to be a high price due to scarcity or just the danger of shipping them across dangerous seas, would take dive to the influx of availability. Would we see a sort of bubble burst in certain markets that thrived on this on going threat? Could we see new threats arise that were previously kept at bay due to this threat?
Overland shipping and new inland roads would shift the regional economy away from the water.
Check out the movie "it came from beneath the sea" a 1950's movie about a giant octopus terrorizing San Francisco and the California coast...
