I’ve been trying to learn the fretboard using the cycle of fifths/fourths method. It has been difficult because there’s a lot of memorization. I like your approach with using notes on a string with octave reference points and understanding the logic of the fretboard. Thanks for the video. Super helpful!
Again a very good explanation and good tips. I've bought an acoustic bass two days ago and I am learning the fretboard (and I am already quite confortable). The trick with the octave (2 strings+ 2 frets), I've already found by myself. There is another one: 3 strings+3 frets back. But I want also have an absolute view of the notes on the fretboard (not only relative). Somethings has helped me very much: the circle of fifth (in inverse because the strings are augmenting a forth). B-E-A-D-G-C-F. And then I've decovered two diagonals F-B-F-B and B-F-B-F on the fretboard (beginning at fret 1 and fret 7). This diagonals are sequences of tritones (forth+halftone). At each B there is beginning a sequence of fifths and at each F there is terminating a sequence of fifths. If you respect this you can formaly see directly the notes on the fretboard. Something that helped me also are the three blocks of 2x2 notes (E,F and B,C) placed and those diagonals.
Thanks WerlstWieJesus! These are great patterns to notices as well. Noticing patterns on the fretboard is crucial since the fretboard is laid out in way that a single shape can be moved around anywhere on the fretboard and the fingering stays the same. Thanks for sharing these!

You point out well the relations and logic and once you understand that, you don't have to learn the fretboard, like a poem. Thank you again and keep up the great work! :)
Good video. My takeaway from this one is to practice the same string and neighbouring-string octaves. Bass teachers often recommend a cycle of fifths method but that's not at all how my brain works. It made so much more sense to me to use landmarks like BC EF, 5th fret notes, and 7th fret notes. Also, sometimes they say to ignore the fret marks but there's a C major scale on fret marks hiding in plain sight!

@@inspector-tech it's a Modulus Quantum 5. i've adjusted the truss rod once, and i've had the bass since 2010! it's a pretty solid neck! And compared to my other basses with wooden necks, i've had to adjust the truss rod once a year.
