I'd never seen a lesson so simple and disrupting at the same time. It may be a little challenging to get used to this pattern, but it's really easy to understand, so you're halfway there. It's no go knowing shapes or something if you don't really understand what you're doing with your instrument! And what about this gentleman's powerful, deep and smooth voice? I bet he can sing as good as his bass playing. He seems to master his voice as he speaks. Thanks a lot, my brother! Here's some love from Brazil!

OK, This is insane!!! It's a very simple concept, BUT this concept gives you such facility and movement throughout almost any scale ( I personally consider modes and scales the same thing/ different versions of each other. As in Ionian = 1, Dorian = 1a. and so on) This lesson is a blessing!!!!! Thank you Rich Brown!!!!!

I'd never thought of this before & what I like is how the exercise restarts on alternate rh fingers. I changed over to rh 'economy' picking a couple of years ago (going up-alternate, comimg down-raking) & it caused me countless issues due to my rh middle finger being longer etc.
So I constantly devise exercises to address this & am improving! The 'issues' are the equivelent of rubbing your stomach while patting your head...seemingly impossible to execute. Yet they're not 😊 👍
PS Great to see on Talking Bass the other day!

    • @richbrownbass

To me, simple things are often the most elegant. A good friend of mine said it thus, If something has two parts, each part must be right or it will not work. If there are 43 parts, if one piece is not quite perfect, you can jiggle the next 42 pieces and make it all work out in the end. Thanks again Rich.

Yes, this video could have been 6 min. But then we would have missed the expansion possibilities. So don't worry about a short video. A teacher shows the lesson. A master says "now check this out" and reveals their thinking. Your enthusiasm of possibilities is inspiring to me as a student.

It does. It's such a great sound. One cool melodic minor exercise you could try is playing the 'odds' up to the 11th, then coming down the scale to the root. Playing this on all the modes in order makes for a beautiful etude.
