I didn't get a military dictator vibe except perhaps the uniform. I mean, Prime Minister... usually they call themselves "El Presidente" or "Glorious Leader" or something. But who knows.
Huh, I got way too invested in trying to figure this out... If we look at CrowNews specifically, here's the story that unfolds as I can figure it: 1: CarrierCorp is a nuclear power plant, run by a pair of Corrupt brothers, who cut corners to 'squeeze out any short term profit'. 2: CarrierCorp's Safety Inspector is mauled by an Emu as a result of your choices on Day 2. 3: As the Safety Inspector (the one 'preventing many accidents') is killed, the power plant fails and spills toxic waste across the valley. (Day 3) 4: One of the CEO brothers dies of a heart attack as a result of your choices on day 4. 5: The remaining CEO of CarrierCorp sails his Yatcht into a beach and impales himself as a result of your choices on day 6. 6: The toxic waste kills thousands. (Day 7) If we read between the lines, the toxic spill is a result of both corrupt management and the death of the safety inspector. The company covers up the spill after hundreds die, people assume things are fixed and go back to their lives: but the corrupt company never properly cleans up the mess. As people return to their lives, the fumes from the untreated toxic waste kills them in their sleep. There's also a little subtext that suggests it might even be intentional. Charlie lives outside of town and would (potentially?) not be affected, was about to be arrested for fraud and insider trading and when approached by the police, was so scared that he had a heart attack and died right there. With a boatload of salt, I'd propose: - Charlie was double dealing his (also corrupt) brother: trying to tank the company value so that he could buy him out at a steal. - He sabotaged the power plant regularly, but never did any real damage due to the excellent safety inspector. Whether this was directly (spanner in the works sort of thing) or indirectly by appealing to his brothers greed ("Just let it run hot - it's never melted down before") is unclear. - After the Emu incident, the sabotage worked: too well. All of a sudden, Charlie is responsible for hundreds of deaths. - Seeing the police, he doesn't assume that he's going to be tried for fraud - he assumes he's going to be tried for murder. So, this is a game I'm going to sink too many hours into it seems...
Wow, blows my thoughts out of the water. Figured had something to do with the brother on day 4, due to the news story on day 5. Was thinking the Brother is supposed to live, so he gets arrested and reveals the corruption, preventing whatever caused people to die from toxic fumes. Serving as the "this ain't a Bioware game" warning so to speak =p.
He would have been my first choice to go. Mainly because my cat (well, kinda, still not sure who owns who) would kill me if I prioritized any other cat.
Something to note is that by profession, if you had killed the pilot in the third group then you likely would have killed hundreds of passengers with him in a freak plane accident.
The kill 2 of 6 I would go with the drug addict and revolutionary are my gut reactions to kill. Drug addict editor: dark past might lead him to a murder rampage if things go wrong. Revolutionary: I’m still 50/50 here since the revolution could lead to the overthrowing of a corrupt government for a more fair and less warmongering group. On the other hand he could lead to the death of countless people and instill a far worse government institution. Either way if he acts then tons will die.
Alternatively if the first half of the corrupt ceo duo had been arrested then the other could have been detained on the first’s testament before they did harm.
And what do we learn about ourselves with this game? That even with the best of intentions, we will still presume who is deserving of life depending on our perception of how useful they are. This game is deep, man.

In the US, two weeks notice when resigning is polite but absolutely not required. You can say "I quit" and walk out the door that very moment, unless you're in the military. Refusing to accept the resignation and forcing a person to remain on the premises to work seems like it would qualify for criminal charges like unlawful imprisonment.
No Jon, quitting it is a civil matter, a notice period is not legally enforceable, you can quit with immediate effect and they have to take that as read, though if you have already been told you are fired in writing then you can't quit because that legally would have precedence, it's not good enough verbally though. Always handy having a quitting with immediate effect letter handy if things get rocky in a job.

I was like "think of the cat Jon, if you kill him there's going to be a headline about a student found with his face eaten off by his book reviewing cat".
What is with the use of 'they' and 'them' for all the clients? Makes it sound like every individual is a whole family or something. Is this part of it's early access state, and it's being used in the gender neutral sense because earlier in development there was no name or picture attached, or because it referred to groups of people who could die in an given accident? It hasn't been too obtrusive from what I've seen so far, but it'll probably run into an Oxford Comma justifying situation sooner or later, so to speak.
The gender neutrality is our goal, yup. We don't want people to base their opinions on gender(and some other things we leave out) and so far it has worked even though some people find the use of "their" as an issue.
@@placeholdergameworks I never found that a good method though. Granted, it's not too bad here, but for a worst case example, I will always think of Borderlands 3, where the robot character Fl4k is called 'they', which is really bad as the robot is also the pet class. So every use of 'they' can refer to the robot, OR the robot AND the pet. And it's not always obvious based on context. Besides, if you want to avoid people basing their opinions on gender, the picture and the name are big giveaways. If you don't take those away, then you haven't solved the issue, but you've just introduced the potential for confusion for individuals with family or business partners, where the 'they' can potentially refer to the specific person, or the person and those associated with them. Mostly, I don't see it as a problem at all, but that's a topic for another discussion. If you see gender bias as an issue, then you need to go all out and remove names and pictures (or go to the effort to keep names and pictures androgynous). A partial solution such as this doesn't actually resolve your concern.
Just thinking out loud here, "Mark 2 humans with the Marker of Death." Sounds like you could leave three blank, mark one to live, and one to die. idk, just something I was thinking.

I may not be a good person, because I instantly viewed all the profiles in a very utilitarian way and came to conclusions on who should die very quickly. In this order: 1. Impact on society and humanity as a whole. 2. Dependants. 3. Personal flaws. (Substance abuse etc.) 4. The morality of killing *insert name here*.

In the US you can quit most jobs without giving notice. Two weeks notice is a courtesy that future employers will look at when deciding to hire you. Since it is harder to collect unemployment benefits when you quit, it is actually often better to get fired, while employers prefer that you quit.
There isn’t necessarily a notice period when you quit. There may be legal or other repercussions depending on where you live but in California, for instance, employer or employee may terminate employment at any time for any reason legally (within laws like anti-discrimination and anti-retribution).

This needs to be a live stream as well, even if it's a normal video, so that Claire can comment live on Jon's justifications for killing people.
No! Selling out while a student is the best possible outcome! Now he can graduate debt-free. As far as you're fired/i quit goes, there's no employment protection in the afterlife i guess
Darn, Jon. Condemning the Prime Minister just because he chose to homeschool
To be fair, the implications of an "apolitical" puppet of the military with disgusting amounts of money make for a rather easy kill...
I also thought that was a little harsh. Nothing wrong with homeschooling at all. I was homeschooled myself.
I didn't get a military dictator vibe except perhaps the uniform. I mean, Prime Minister... usually they call themselves "El Presidente" or "Glorious Leader" or something. But who knows.
@@JB-xl2jc They could be the prime minister for a dictator. Aka. One of his generals
He did die in "night on town"
I feel like killing the safety inspector was the wrong decision
Stopped more nuclear power plants from being built, though...
@@Northstar1989 which lead to a lot of uranium sitting around...
Huh, I got way too invested in trying to figure this out...
If we look at CrowNews specifically, here's the story that unfolds as I can figure it:
1: CarrierCorp is a nuclear power plant, run by a pair of Corrupt brothers, who cut corners to 'squeeze out any short term profit'.
2: CarrierCorp's Safety Inspector is mauled by an Emu as a result of your choices on Day 2.
3: As the Safety Inspector (the one 'preventing many accidents') is killed, the power plant fails and spills toxic waste across the valley. (Day 3)
4: One of the CEO brothers dies of a heart attack as a result of your choices on day 4.
5: The remaining CEO of CarrierCorp sails his Yatcht into a beach and impales himself as a result of your choices on day 6.
6: The toxic waste kills thousands. (Day 7)
If we read between the lines, the toxic spill is a result of both corrupt management and the death of the safety inspector.
With a boatload of salt, I'd propose:
- Charlie was double dealing his (also corrupt) brother: trying to tank the company value so that he could buy him out at a steal.
You would be a great detective... or a grim reaper :)
The Cat Twitter Account Holder gets to live? Does the world actually need another cat twitter account for goodness sake?
He would have been my first choice to go.
Mainly because my cat (well, kinda, still not sure who owns who) would kill me if I prioritized any other cat.
Yes. Yes it does.
But the cat might be sad if it's owner died, which is unacceptable.
Yea right. Cat would be like “cool, more food for me”
Something to note is that by profession, if you had killed the pilot in the third group then you likely would have killed hundreds of passengers with him in a freak plane accident.
"You've had a good run. Sorry about that!"- ha ha priceless
Jon on nuclear disaster deaths: "Not as bad as Chernobyl, so ok"
Low benchmark there, fella.
And what do we learn about ourselves with this game?
That even with the best of intentions, we will still presume who is deserving of life depending on our perception of how useful they are.
This game is deep, man.
I do like how Jon missed and killed the Deadly Premonition reference.
Was the mysterious wheelchair bound capatalist who helped a lost detective a Deadly Premonition reference? As in Harry Stewart?
Wasn't expecting one of those to cross the Grim Reapers desk. Neat.
Also a bit like PurgaTony, which is a good thing. At least Jon only has to kill them, and not determine where they go. Though I would have liked to have seen him send someone to hell based on pizza topping choices.
Cool concept, look forward to release.
Yes! You are correct! :)

p.s. Keep up the grand work.
This seems like it could be used in some philosophy lessons to discuss different definitions of morality and moral frameworks
That's high praise! :3 One time we should probably make a video about how the game made the higher leadership of an art school got rustled because our project lead for the game presented this as her thesis...
Death and Taxes Game That sounds like quite the story!
And yeah, I immediately thought how some of the conundrums presented by the game could be really interesting ways to explain diferent philosophers version of morality in a “practical” way; and even how other questions can be explored, like what gives the player the authority to make those decisions, whether they should make them and such. Quite a fascinating concept.
And charming execution

Was the mysterious capitalist at 38:25 a reference to Deadly Premonition? After all the guy's last name was Stewart. Honestly that was one of my favorite series on the channel... if only for Jon's reactions
I like how on Day 3 Jon never factored into his reasoning that 'Columba' was a *_Commercial Airline Pilot_* and that, if he had chosen to kill him, it likely would have been in a plane crash killing all passengers and crew as well... Surely that would be the *_first_* factor, rather than his family?
Hey, industrial rock is a thing

Commenting 3 yrs late but wanted to suggest that in an apocalypse, bikes would be very useful transportation and a guy who can repair and customize them would be pretty useful.
A manager of a community garden would have organizational experience as well as knowledge of growing and finding food. Not to mention she has building skills relating to modified shelter.

As a the mother of three (mostly) homeschooled (unschooled mainly) children I take umbrage at the suggestion that traditional schooling is the best option for the politician’s kids. My oldest has a Masters

My youngest has two beautiful children, works freelance as an illustrator, and owns a lovely starter home with her partner, a licensed arborist.

Saw this on GrayStillPlays a while back.... He's kind of associated his channel with playing some really trash mobile games for a laugh, so I never know which ones can actually be played "correctly". Very happy to see this getting played by someone that takes it more seriously.
Haha, yup, the game can be played in really different ways, that was one of our goals :)
Death and Taxes Game :) I do have to be honest. His sheer determination to break any game he plays is pretty funny. And, honestly I think him intentionally trying to make the world burn kind of showed off the consequences of choices a little better than in MATN’s run in this video. Michael doesn't have dependants. He had a cat, I think that counts as a dependant doesn't it?
I was like "think of the cat Jon, if you kill him there's going to be a headline about a student found with his face eaten off by his book reviewing cat".
Hi I’m Manny Calavera, I’m your travel agent.
So this is like reverse Actuary simulator? Seems great!
Just thinking out loud here, "Mark 2 humans with the Marker of Death." Sounds like you could leave three blank, mark one to live, and one to die. idk, just something I was thinking.
I had a similar thought, but one of the people who worked on the game(named “Oakwarrior” here on YT) said in reply to someone else’s comment that the demo’s text was a bit too vague and that the full release will be more of “_#_ must die” or “_#_ must live”. They did say that it led to some tension, which is an “unintended consequence”. The game also has a YT account they’ve been replying to comments on here with too, “Death and Taxes Game” I believe
So if Jon happens to become death the way to survive is to have a ton of children that aren't home schooled
I may not be a good person, because I instantly viewed all the profiles in a very utilitarian way and came to conclusions on who should die very quickly. In this order:
1. Impact on society and humanity as a whole.
2. Dependants.
3. Personal flaws. (Substance abuse etc.)
4. The morality of killing *insert name here*.
You are going to love the game, I think :D

3. fun!! 😂

2:48 So you're basically a Warhammer 40K Inquisitor.
In the US you can quit most jobs without giving notice. Two weeks notice is a courtesy that future employers will look at when deciding to hire you. Since it is harder to collect unemployment benefits when you quit, it is actually often better to get fired, while employers prefer that you quit.
Death & Taxes: Kill Everything run?
There isn’t necessarily a notice period when you quit. There may be legal or other repercussions depending on where you live but in California, for instance, employer or employee may terminate employment at any time for any reason legally (within laws like anti-discrimination and anti-retribution).
