Thanks for this. You changed my life here. Almost answered the question “Conan, what is best in life?” It’s not to crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women. It’s open G tuning.

Thank you, Jeff. Had a fantastic light bulb moment when you mentioned that, in open G, we can still use our triads on the B, G and D strings. That is absolute gold! One of the drawbacks when we start out exploring an open tuning, is that our usual chord shapes won't work in the same way, so we can get lost, or we get stuck in I-IV-V's. But with this nugget, we have access to everything! So excited to explore the possibilities this opens up. Thank you.

Learning Triads on your middle strings (D,G,B) gives you soloing options as well as simple chords. Amazing chords when you can have open drone strings banging in the voicing.
I vacillate between trying to hone in on my Music Theory, and standard tuning, or unleashing my creativity and deep diving into Open Tunings (G)

I’ve been a slide guitar junkie since I first heard Duane Allman in 1970. I didn’t know about open tuning until I bought a book at the bookstore in 1977 called Traditional Country and Bottleneck guitar by Arlen Roth. I learned some great stuff from that book. It came with a vinyl record.

The minute you tune your guitar correctly, you can hear the difference. I learned "The key of Keef" for "Start Me Up" years ago, but soon found it fit "Sad Sad Sad " also, and on to many Stones tunes...now I hear it constantly on many other tunes.

I play .11s for slide. But the real secret is to put a .13 on the top string. You want the higher tension because you’re tuned down AND because if you’re using slide it keeps you from hitting your slide on the fretboard. Also think about using normal d b and g strings in the fret 543 order like in a G bar chord (533 for minor). It helps you relocate where all your notes are in a standard pentatonic if you want to solo without a slide.

    • @patricksullivan7140

Never thought of that. Fatting up the top string. I love open tune slide. Even when action is slightly higher, you still start to loose a little at the top. Great advise.

First open tuning I learned. Open G. I play banjo & dobro, so I was already there. Jimmy Page does a lot with Open G & alt tunings. A few months later I did Open D and went from their to Drop D, to DADGAD, etc. Keith plays in both standard and open G. Around Sticky Fingers & Exile he is mostly Open G, but he plays in Open E and Standard Tuning. Nice lesson. Duane Allman and Joni Mitchell do a lot in Open E. Nick Drake goes carry with Alternate Tunings.

Jeff, I know you're going to say chord tone soloing, but what's your advice for soloing over a 1,4,5 which has moments of bringing in the 4ths of each of those chords. G hammers to C, C hammers to F, and D hammers to G. Hitting G, C and F tones in G mixolydian and then handling the D major carefully seems like a good option.

Down down, Status Quo, open G capo 4th fret. It took me years to understand why I couldn't play a lot of stuff I liked. When I found open G it felt so natural, and didn't feel like I had to adapt much from standard tuning. Even playing a bit of lead, the pentatonic scale still seems to work. Great video, thank you.

Richards isn’t a shredder but damn the guy knows how to write a riff that is simple yet sophisticated. I really enjoyed your presentation. I am retired now but when I played live covering typical Keith Richards / Rolling Stones classics I tuned my guitar GGDGBD. I used two "A" 5th. strings and tuned them both down to "G". I did try simply increasing the tension on a normal "E" 6th. to "G" but the extra tension on the neck is not recommended!! I can understand why Keith only plays with 5 strings, his riffs sound better without the bass 6th. string tuned to "D". I found having to bass strings tuned to "G" unusual and effective. When I changed strings on other standard tuned guitars I always kept the "A" 5th string. Kind regards, John.

There is no reason on earth to EVER stay stuck in “standard” tuning, which is a non-natural tuning. When you play a piano, the keys are arranged in a very natural & open fashion…. The same concept applies to Open G or Open D tuning! Once people realize how amazing Open G and Open D are, they rarely switch back to “standard” tuning as it becomes abundantly clear that guitars are really designed to be played in Open G or Open D and not “standard” tuning. “standard” tuning only exists so that the majority of players can play the majority of songs using standard tuning method… but it isn’t natural to play that way. And it sounds horrible. Switch to an Open G or Open D and the guitar instantly sounds rich and full. I went to Open G and Open D after 40 years of standard tuning and haven’t looked back… you won’t regret it… I promise! Ditch “standard” tuning and instantly enjoy playing guitars… and you will sound amazing doing it :)

I was having a miserable time trying to understand standard tuning and have the strength to make barre chords on an instrument designed for a man’s hands. That is the question. I’m sure I’m being overly cautious but I have had a few videos demonetized for playing the CHORDS to a Zep tune. Since I’ve Been Loving You, a blues. Honestly I don’t care about the $ the video generates as it’s not much at all, but sometimes they can hit you with a strike. If it’s a prerecorded video I can check first, but live who knows. But I completely agree with you, I’m teaching. It’s frustrating. I also got dinged for calling a blues progression out by the title in the thumb nail, and they claimed the royalties. For a blues… Rick’s a friend and we’ve discussed it. Easier to avoid it in the live streams.

By the way, I like your thinking on the Open G, but it's important to realize the history behind the tuning. Kieth Richard's may have 'written' tunes in it, but the mechanics were around WAY before him. He only emulated his heroes and played around with it. Sadly, he is a shadow of his former self as a musician these days, if you ask me. Thanks for a cool lesson! Subscribed to your channel. Nice hat.

Early song books were ‘fake books’. Not even in the right key. Rain song tuning is DGCGCD.

My uncles played guitar and always played one finger chords, which was strange and foreign to me when i started learning guitar in standard tuning
.I later learned that they all played banjo, and that banjos are tuned in open G. So their guitars were all tuned to open G.

The problem I see with Open G is that it wastes the 6th string. With Open E, Open D, and DADGAD you use that string.
