If your confused. Season 2 and Pluto are all anime only. They are not cannon to the Manga. Book of Cicus, Book of Murder and, the next arc, Book of Alantic( I think?) Are cannon to the Manga. Hence why Pluto is not in this along with some of the characters in Season 2.

As someone who is a weeb but also a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes I actually absolutely loved Book of Murder and the references to Sherlock Holmes and their take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (and how it’s implied that Sebastian’s Jermey disguise and mannerisms are clearly a nod and inspired by the great detective himself)
Ok so I’m an avid book of murder fan, but the anime adaptation did drop the bag bc my favorite part of the manga could only be kind of translated to animation; the entire arc is just supposed to be silly, goofy, convoluted, and an outside look on just how weird Sebastian and Ciel are about everything. You’re kind of supposed to read this story through Arthur Conan Doyle’s eyes and watch this poor man figure out something the reader already knows. It doesn’t actually switch to ciel and Sebastian’s pov until the very end with snake. Like the entire arc is supposed to be a flashback based on a letter if I remember correctly and it’s just supposed to be the audience pointing and laughing at the other characters.

Book of murder isn’t my favorite arch but I still love it because It does explore some of Sebastian’s powers/capabilities in the wildest, goofiest way possible 😂 I do like that it’s addressing how the Queen was dealing with Ciel basically disobeying her orders and showing us she means business if you fuck up. I also love that Snake comes back and is given a new home even by the person who basically took away his old home because Ciel low key feels guilty but at the same time knows he can’t give him the whole truth. Book of Atlantic is definitely more hype/suspenseful in my opinion so I’m excited to see how Danny likes it

it's not the best or most exciting arc in the world, but i really do love book of murder! i think for all that it lacks in intrigue it's made up for by what i feel it adds to the characters' personalities, Especially ciel and sebastian. i think it's a super nice character-focused arc with lots of silliness and convoluted scheming that's just fun to see. ciel and seb are always at their best when theyre working together, but also making things infinitely more difficult for each other in the process. they reach a common goal on the most rocky road imaginable and come out of it as closer, bitter allies. they really just love messing with people!! it's great!! can't wait for book of atlantic, THAT is a super special and interesting arc :)
Ngl the owl-briefcase joke nearly killed me, because I was drinking pepper soup while watching and nearly choked. I mean, the real ACD was actually a huge believer in the supernatural. Portraying his belief as being due to having actual experience with a demon is actually really funny. Additionally, at the time it was believed that it was common for people to be buried alive as some diseases (e.g. tuberculosis) make sufferers appear dead. It wasn't really true, more just a common fear borne out of a few cases and then a lot of books.
As a stand alone adaptation yeah I can see why it seems like a step down. However being a manga reader and seeing how the series progresses it's one of the best arcs imo. Ciel actually receiving consequences/punishment for his impulsive actions in the previous arc is sooooo important. He doesn't just get a free pass because he's the MC. This is something people who write villainous MCs tend to lack. Punishing them for their immoral or their bad actions is what makes them believable. And what makes it fun is watching these characters scheme and manipulate the consequences into favoring them. The Sebastian twist is obvious to the audience but in terms of the characters and world in the series hell yeah it's a twist. The manga is heavily rooted in realism so that's why it's so mind blowing, humans will never understand the supernatural. Of course I love any arc that has the servants getting the screen time they deserve. I also love the very subtle theme of found family in BB so I enjoy seeing Ciel and Sebastian interact with the said servants. But the biggest crime is them not animating majority of Chapter 51. 🤦♀️ You actually get to hear Earl Grey's motives from HIS OWN mouth. And it also leaves a kind eerie cliffhanger about the queen. This arc gave her personality and showing us she's very cunning and lowkey terrifying. And then also taking out Snake's official introduction to the servants makes it feel so choppy. Makes it hard for people to remember that EVERY arc has been connected in some kind of way. All the chapters that they skip are what makes BB flow so well imo. I know BB fans don't like hearing this but this why I recommend the manga instead of the anime. Everything is there. There's no missing pieces it's all there in the manga. I don't like sounding like the toxic manga fan but every time Danny has a question that would have been answered if he had read manga irks me sometimes. I don't blame him at all just glad he's having fun in his own way is what matters, but my resentment for the anime grows more and more as I watch it. 😭
Completely agree with you It's why I'm nervous about season 4 It's not as action focused or dark as boa (except for a few scenes) and the cricket part could be perceived as boring so I hope the new studio handles it well (not to mention the controversial student tradition thing) because otherwise it might not be received all that well since the announcement brought a lot of fans back in and fueled their curiosity with what this will be about I like that arc a lot because it just shows how much ciel lies, cheats and manipulates into having what he wants but Idk how others will like it since bom is perceived a bit split between people who love it and people who find it boring I mean it depends on those fans on whether they continue the green witch arc afterwards which is one of the best arcs
I mean a lot of people see the art style to already be an issue (though only with sebastian) which I find stupid since it's only one frame they dislike (personally I find it to be better) So I'm unsure if they will do it good. It handled spy x family good so there's a bit of hope that the new studio does it better and hopefully excludes less (I especially hope they don't leave out that chapter between public school and green witch arc since it has lore in it with claudia)
As a person who has relatively recently read the manga, BB is easily one of the most underrated manga, narratively speaking (in general too), and it will probably continue to be treated as a joke because of all the preconceptions people have of this series. Plot and nuance are the last things people think about when they think of Black Butler. Absolutely no hate on Danny, he's having fun and cracking jokes, and it makes me laugh, however he definitely started this reaction series on the basis that Black Butler is one of Tumblr's favorite anime and that it's mostly for the fangirls. That's why he was surprised with the Circus arc actually being engaging in his eyes. When I read its manga I've found it pretty difficult to return to the anime because it takes out so much context and important information. I literally only stay because I love the voice acting! I love how the characters are treated in the manga compared to anime. I do agree that they should animate chapter 85, and I also think they should animate chapter 66 because it foreshadows a certain plot twist and would probably be the perfect way to introduce Nina after they failed to introduce her at the end of the Circus arc. I can't wait for season 4 because all the arcs have been nothing but pure entertainment when I read them! Action oriented or not all BB manga arcs are very good story wise and fleshes out the characters that aren't just Ciel and Sebastian, which the anime unfortunately missed. Hopefully season 4 is the adaptation that captures the manga the best while adding stuff that helps improve the experience.

To be fair to Arthur, believing an older man is the same person as the guy lying in the cold storage dead would be a hard sell for me. Like, if some older guy had similar mannerisms to your video editor, I doubt your first thought would be that they were the same person. It's easy to catch as a plot device in a supernatural story though. As for the Scottish, I've never watched the anime (read the manga instead), so I never heard those mix-ups by the VA. My family is large, so I think one of my cousins once-or-twice-removed, who was younger than me came up to me, and on my phone screen there was a scene where Ciel was crying. She tapped it and I asked her what she was doing, and she replied ‘He looked sad, so I wanted to give him a head pat’ MY HEART *M E L T E D -* 😭😭😭
If they ever get to animating the hilarious chaos that is the Phantom Five, and Danny gets to watch it… I think this arc is similar in that a lot of it just requires the audience to go along with the joke. I don’t think Yana (the author) intended for it to be a particularly clever murder mystery, but it’s entertaining nonetheless to see Sebastian and Ciel scheming against the Queen’s intended punishment, and it brings Snake to the Phantomhive household. love him

The point about the scratches is it’s ONLY around the key hole. From shaking hands trying to unlock it. If he dropped it the scratches would be all over. Same with the phone charger in Sherlock Holmes your phone may be covered in scratches but if it’s pristine except the charger port you have a drinking problem or arthritis.

And the difference between that and a charger is that watches are not only expensive but difficult to scratch like this, because, you know, they are made out of metal. For that, you would have to JAM the key in there, repeatedly, which you wouldn't do, because the obvious expensiveness. Which is why the conclusion is; alcoholism. As someone who is a weeb but also a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes I actually absolutely loved Book of Murder and the references to Sherlock Holmes and their take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (and how it’s implied that Sebastian’s Jermey disguise and mannerisms are clearly a nod and inspired by the great detective himself)

Ok so I’m an avid book of murder fan, but the anime adaptation did drop the bag bc my favorite part of the manga could only be kind of translated to animation; the entire arc is just supposed to be silly, goofy, convoluted, and an outside look on just how weird Sebastian and Ciel are about everything. You’re kind of supposed to read this story through Arthur Conan Doyle’s eyes and watch this poor man figure out something the reader already knows. It doesn’t actually switch to ciel and Sebastian’s pov until the very end with snake. Like the entire arc is supposed to be a flashback based on a letter if I remember correctly and it’s just supposed to be the audience pointing and laughing at the other characters.

Book of murder isn’t my favorite arch but I still love it because It does explore some of Sebastian’s powers/capabilities in the wildest, goofiest way possible 😂
I do like that it’s addressing how the Queen was dealing with Ciel basically disobeying her orders and showing us she means business if you fuck up. I also love that Snake comes back and is given a new home even by the person who basically took away his old home because Ciel low key feels guilty but at the same time knows he can’t give him the whole truth.
Book of Atlantic is definitely more hype/suspenseful in my opinion so I’m excited to see how Danny likes it

it's not the best or most exciting arc in the world, but i really do love book of murder! i think for all that it lacks in intrigue it's made up for by what i feel it adds to the characters' personalities, Especially ciel and sebastian. i think it's a super nice character-focused arc with lots of silliness and convoluted scheming that's just fun to see. ciel and seb are always at their best when theyre working together, but also making things infinitely more difficult for each other in the process. they reach a common goal on the most rocky road imaginable and come out of it as closer, bitter allies. they really just love messing with people!! it's great!! can't wait for book of atlantic, THAT is a super special and interesting arc :)

Ngl the owl-briefcase joke nearly killed me, because I was drinking pepper soup while watching and nearly choked.
I mean, the real ACD was actually a huge believer in the supernatural. Portraying his belief as being due to having actual experience with a demon is actually really funny.
Additionally, at the time it was believed that it was common for people to be buried alive as some diseases (e.g. tuberculosis) make sufferers appear dead. It wasn't really true, more just a common fear borne out of a few cases and then a lot of books.
As a stand alone adaptation yeah I can see why it seems like a step down. However being a manga reader and seeing how the series progresses it's one of the best arcs imo. Ciel actually receiving consequences/punishment for his impulsive actions in the previous arc is sooooo important. He doesn't just get a free pass because he's the MC. This is something people who write villainous MCs tend to lack. Punishing them for their immoral or their bad actions is what makes them believable. And what makes it fun is watching these characters scheme and manipulate the consequences into favoring them. The Sebastian twist is obvious to the audience but in terms of the characters and world in the series hell yeah it's a twist. The manga is heavily rooted in realism so that's why it's so mind blowing, humans will never understand the supernatural.
Of course I love any arc that has the servants getting the screen time they deserve. I also love the very subtle theme of found family in BB so I enjoy seeing Ciel and Sebastian interact with the said servants.
But the biggest crime is them not animating majority of Chapter 51. 🤦♀️
You actually get to hear Earl Grey's motives from HIS OWN mouth. And it also leaves a kind eerie cliffhanger about the queen. This arc gave her personality and showing us she's very cunning and lowkey terrifying. And then also taking out Snake's official introduction to the servants makes it feel so choppy. Makes it hard for people to remember that EVERY arc has been connected in some kind of way. All the chapters that they skip are what makes BB flow so well imo.
I know BB fans don't like hearing this but this why I recommend the manga instead of the anime. Everything is there. There's no missing pieces it's all there in the manga.
I don't like sounding like the toxic manga fan but every time Danny has a question that would have been answered if he had read manga irks me sometimes. I don't blame him at all just glad he's having fun in his own way is what matters, but my resentment for the anime grows more and more as I watch it. 😭

It's not as action focused or dark as boa (except for a few scenes) and the cricket part could be perceived as boring so I hope the new studio handles it well (not to mention the controversial student tradition thing) because otherwise it might not be received all that well since the announcement brought a lot of fans back in and fueled their curiosity with what this will be about
I like that arc a lot because it just shows how much ciel lies, cheats and manipulates into having what he wants but Idk how others will like it since bom is perceived a bit split between people who love it and people who find it boring
I mean it depends on those fans on whether they continue the green witch arc afterwards which is one of the best arcs
I mean a lot of people see the art style to already be an issue (though only with sebastian) which I find stupid since it's only one frame they dislike (personally I find it to be better)
So I'm unsure if they will do it good. It handled spy x family good so there's a bit of hope that the new studio does it better and hopefully excludes less (I especially hope they don't leave out that chapter between public school and green witch arc since it has lore in it with claudia)
As a person who has relatively recently read the manga, BB is easily one of the most underrated manga, narratively speaking (in general too), and it will probably continue to be treated as a joke because of all the preconceptions people have of this series. Plot and nuance are the last things people think about when they think of Black Butler.
Absolutely no hate on Danny, he's having fun and cracking jokes, and it makes me laugh, however he definitely started this reaction series on the basis that Black Butler is one of Tumblr's favorite anime and that it's mostly for the fangirls. That's why he was surprised with the Circus arc actually being engaging in his eyes.
When I read its manga I've found it pretty difficult to return to the anime because it takes out so much context and important information. I literally only stay because I love the voice acting! I love how the characters are treated in the manga compared to anime. I do agree that they should animate chapter 85, and I also think they should animate chapter 66 because it foreshadows a certain plot twist and would probably be the perfect way to introduce Nina after they failed to introduce her at the end of the Circus arc.
I can't wait for season 4 because all the arcs have been nothing but pure entertainment when I read them! Action oriented or not all BB manga arcs are very good story wise and fleshes out the characters that aren't just Ciel and Sebastian, which the anime unfortunately missed. Hopefully season 4 is the adaptation that captures the manga the best while adding stuff that helps improve the experience.

I wouldn't agree that Book of Murder is the best arc, but Book of the Atlantic? Chef's Kiss!!! I can't wait for you to start it! My daughter, my friend and I drove 2.5 hours to the nearest city playing this in theater, had my car almost die on us, got lost driving back at 11 at night... and we would have done it all over again for this arc!
To be fair to Arthur, believing an older man is the same person as the guy lying in the cold storage dead would be a hard sell for me. Like, if some older guy had similar mannerisms to your video editor, I doubt your first thought would be that they were the same person. It's easy to catch as a plot device in a supernatural story though.
As for the Scottish, I've never watched the anime (read the manga instead), so I never heard those mix-ups by the VA. That's hilarious how it's so obviously Scottish inflections on those words xD
Just randomly, a sminch unrelated, but a few years back I was watching BB while at a relative‘s house. My family is large, so I think one of my cousins once-or-twice-removed, who was younger than me came up to me, and on my phone screen there was a scene where Ciel was crying. She tapped it and I asked her what she was doing, and she replied ‘He looked sad, so I wanted to give him a head pat’ MY HEART *M E L T E D -* 😭😭😭
If they ever get to animating the hilarious chaos that is the Phantom Five, and Danny gets to watch it… I think this arc is similar in that a lot of it just requires the audience to go along with the joke. I don’t think Yana (the author) intended for it to be a particularly clever murder mystery, but it’s entertaining nonetheless to see Sebastian and Ciel scheming against the Queen’s intended punishment, and it brings Snake to the Phantomhive household. love him

The point about the scratches is it’s ONLY around the key hole. From shaking hands trying to unlock it. If he dropped it the scratches would be all over. Same with the phone charger in Sherlock Holmes your phone may be covered in scratches but if it’s pristine except the charger port you have a drinking problem or arthritis.
