- Twenty years in the making, a new memorial has been erected, in Washington, D.C., to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who led the Allies to victory in World War II and then led the United States through the early years of the Cold War. Correspondent Rita Braver talks with Ike's granddaughter, Susan Eisenhower, and with the memorial's architect, Frank Gehry, about how best to honor the life and consequential legacy of the general and commander-in-chief, whose reputation has only grown with the passage of time.

How strange. He would have taken the responsibility of failure all on his own and not looking to shuffle blame. Truly honorable.
You're right on that point. Now if he could just design a decent memorial....
He really is the antithesis of trump in that regard…..and yup, while it’s a biggie, it’s but one of many.
Can't wait to see it in DC. Proud Ike is from where I live-Kansas!
JULIE KENNEDY Munden better go see it soon before the leftist progressives burn it down!
Well deserved, Ike was a great guy, and an excellent President and I mostly vote Democrat, but I can recognize a worthy, strong, brave man.
Thank you
Thank you for carrying on my legacy
For all numismatists, take note. Dwight David Eisenhower was the last President to have his image featured on a full sized circulating Dollar coin. It was released from 1971 to 1978. 🇵🇷🇺🇸😎
My father worshipped Ike. He campaigned for him in 1952 and 1956.
Eisenhower described himself as a "progressive conservative" and used terms such as "progressive moderate" and "dynamic conservatism" to describe his approach. He continued all the major New Deal programs still in operation, especially Social Security. He expanded its programs and rolled them into the new Cabinet-level agency of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, while extending benefits to an additional ten million workers. He implemented racial integration in the Armed Services in two years, which had not been completed under Truman.
When the 1954 Congressional elections approached, it became evident that the Republicans were in danger of losing their thin majority in both houses. Eisenhower was among those who blamed the Old Guard for the losses, and he took up the charge to stop suspected efforts by the right wing to take control of the GOP. He then articulated his position as a moderate, progressive Republican: "I have just one purpose ... and that is to build up a strong progressive Republican Party in this country. If the right wing wants a fight, they are going to get it ... before I end up, either this Republican Party will reflect progressivism or I won't be with them anymore."
It really says something about our country and how divided we are that it has taken this long to put up a memorial to President Eisenhower.
That looks like the coolest place can't wait to visit...
We need his like again!
like the when Dwight D, Eisenhower be both army officer and President when his was sill living and when his time was up too, his stood to others who made it bad for him , his had run the army back then fights vs his foes and seeing his own job now,
Imagine having a President that takes responsibility for the decisions they make.
The Eisenhower Peace Arch proposal was a better idea ngl
He sent federal troops to Little Rock to defend a Supreme Court decision.
More than long over due. Great for Ike. He saved the country and the world.
Ike was the last decent Republican elected president.
And he warned us about the danger of this reagan/trump idiocy.
And there never was a decent democrat president.
Greg Moore if you read his bio the kind of personal slander directed at republican presidents started with Ike. After over 20 years in power the Dems turned to lies and slander as they do today. Ike was ‘’lazy’’, ‘’stupid’’, ‘’out if touch’’ etc.
According to Ike....today's republicons are stupid and no one should pay attention to them.....
He tried to warn you idiots.....
@@Dog.soldier1950 sadly the cancer of conservative media and it's perpetual lies makes you ignorant enough to believe the drivel you've written.
@@Dog.soldier1950 right? Ike was sandwiched in between democrats, one of whom dropped the bomb, the other a womanising playboy who brought us to the brink of nuclear war.
I've always been intrigued by Eisenhower's "Cross of Iron" speech. Apparently the man had some strongly conflicting emotions about the military.
I don't understand why his granddaughter had never been to the Eisenhower Memorial. Being studied him for years being a member of the family, and being a foreign policy expert, grand daughter the most foreign policy president in mayby history. Why would she have not gone to that.? Sounds like she didn't know her Grandad as much as we are taught to believe.. I could be wrong. But maybe she's on the wrong side when it comes to for or against Eisenhower. She could be the granddaughter of a scorned ex-wife or something. I don't know ...maybe I'm looking too much into it... but you would think that when they opened up the memorial that she would have been invited.
I have been hammering Frank Gehry for 10 or 15 years.... here is a guy who gets work based on his name alone, and what a disaster some of his designs have been. The U.S. govt spent $150 million on this- imagine what else they're doing with our tax money! I came here because the Wall Street Journal just panned this work this morning - 9/17/20, and they spared no one's feelings. Maybe some good will come out of this moment, like a fund to cleanse the earth of anything done by Frank Gehry.
Frank who?
Wow! It's good to see history like this. A leader who didn't refer to his followers as losers or suckers. Someone who actually protected Black people. Can you even imagine where the US would be if America had then what it has now? Would we be speaking German or Russian? 🙃
We seriously need a *unifying* president like him again!
🤗
I wonder how they are going to do Reagan
When Republicans had integrity...
Dems never had integrity. Clinton is lucky #metoo wasn't popular in the 90s.
My grand pa is pat Roberts I’m Patrick Roberts
What would Charles Kuralt say now that the show is so damn political?
Cough syrup anyone?
when President dwight d eisenhower own vp ricky n, and his army school west p.
I bet your audience has no idea there is a Theodore Roosevelt memorial and couldn't even come close to identifying its location?
I thought Eisenhower got cancelled
Dorothy Counts
Throughout history, we have had the right President at the right time. Teddy Roosevelt, Ike, FDR, Truman, Kennedy, Reagan, Obahma, trump. Well, we missed 1. Lets get the next 45 right.🇺🇸😷😳😭😒
Monte McCarty yeah, Obama was just terrible 🤦♂️
History will be the judge on that. Obama will be in top 10-15. Trump will be last. Bi-partisan people will tell you the same. GOP is unrecognizable now. Its truly one of the lowest times in America history. And, that started before c-19. C-19 has simply exposed all of our society's ills
Warts and all.
Ike was NOT an integrationist, he merely believed in the rule of law.
Actually Eisenhower WAS an integrationist, he SCATHINGLY condemned segregation in several of his State of The Union addresses (among other times) and said racism was based in "fear and distrust in the hearts of men". What Ike believed however, is that integration had to be done gradually and as a federal-state hybrid system. Beyond seeking to enforce Brown v. Board of Education, he completed the military's desegregation, worked to integrate the federal government, worked to desegregate Washington DC in multiple aspects, and collaborated with state and local governments to get multiple state level civil rights measures passed across the country (paving the way for the 1964 Civil Rights Act to be passed by LBJ). He wasn't perfect and some of his strategies didn't work as hoped, but Eisenhower did more to move America toward an integrated society than any president since Ulysses S. Grant.

Lest CBS forgets: Eisenhower was working against Democrats with respect to integration.
Funny how they show the clip of him stating that "mob rule, cannot be allowed to overwrite the decisions of our courts". That tells you he was a leader who believed in the rule of law. If he was alive today, he will likely support securing our borders, supporting our man and women in uniform, first responders, and more importantly, he would have decried the rioting and looting antifa and BLM are presently engaging on, what was that quote again!? 6:04

The ability of Trumpkins to ignore history never ceases to amaze me.
My great grandpa related by...... oh wait, that parts a secret, never mind
Eisenhower would be a Democrat or a Lincoln Project Republican today. He would definitely hate Trump.
I think every Republican who has ever run in the past 100 years would hate Trump. Only one I could maybe think of would be Spiro Agnew since he was just as corrupt.
Socialist Realism meets Norman Rockwell statuary.
His wife was antisemitic.
he was not the best pres my parents told me that
His actions toward Native Americans was deplorable.
He created NWO! He sold this country notice how America changed after he took office! He defeated nazis to create his nwo
Given his support for nuclear testing from Ivy to Hardtack II, why isn’t the library shaped like a hundred and fifty mushroom clouds?
