  • Twenty years in the making, a new memorial has been erected, in Washington, D.C., to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who led the Allies to victory in World War II and then led the United States through the early years of the Cold War. Correspondent Rita Braver talks with Ike's granddaughter, Susan Eisenhower, and with the memorial's architect, Frank Gehry, about how best to honor the life and consequential legacy of the general and commander-in-chief, whose reputation has only grown with the passage of time.

    For all numismatists, take note. Dwight David Eisenhower was the last President to have his image featured on a full sized circulating Dollar coin. It was released from 1971 to 1978. 🇵🇷🇺🇸😎

    Eisenhower described himself as a "progressive conservative" and used terms such as "progressive moderate" and "dynamic conservatism" to describe his approach. He continued all the major New Deal programs still in operation, especially Social Security. He expanded its programs and rolled them into the new Cabinet-level agency of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, while extending benefits to an additional ten million workers. He implemented racial integration in the Armed Services in two years, which had not been completed under Truman.
    When the 1954 Congressional elections approached, it became evident that the Republicans were in danger of losing their thin majority in both houses. Eisenhower was among those who blamed the Old Guard for the losses, and he took up the charge to stop suspected efforts by the right wing to take control of the GOP. He then articulated his position as a moderate, progressive Republican: "I have just one purpose ... and that is to build up a strong progressive Republican Party in this country. If the right wing wants a fight, they are going to get it ... before I end up, either this Republican Party will reflect progressivism or I won't be with them anymore."

    I don't understand why his granddaughter had never been to the Eisenhower Memorial. Being studied him for years being a member of the family, and being a foreign policy expert, grand daughter the most foreign policy president in mayby history. Why would she have not gone to that.? Sounds like she didn't know her Grandad as much as we are taught to believe.. I could be wrong. But maybe she's on the wrong side when it comes to for or against Eisenhower. She could be the granddaughter of a scorned ex-wife or something. I don't know ...maybe I'm looking too much into it... but you would think that when they opened up the memorial that she would have been invited.

    I have been hammering Frank Gehry for 10 or 15 years.... here is a guy who gets work based on his name alone, and what a disaster some of his designs have been. The U.S. govt spent $150 million on this- imagine what else they're doing with our tax money! I came here because the Wall Street Journal just panned this work this morning - 9/17/20, and they spared no one's feelings. Maybe some good will come out of this moment, like a fund to cleanse the earth of anything done by Frank Gehry.

    Ike was NOT an integrationist, he merely believed in the rule of law.

    • @thunderbird1921
      @thunderbird1921 9 месяцев назад

      Actually Eisenhower WAS an integrationist, he SCATHINGLY condemned segregation in several of his State of The Union addresses (among other times) and said racism was based in "fear and distrust in the hearts of men". What Ike believed however, is that integration had to be done gradually and as a federal-state hybrid system. Beyond seeking to enforce Brown v. Board of Education, he completed the military's desegregation, worked to integrate the federal government, worked to desegregate Washington DC in multiple aspects, and collaborated with state and local governments to get multiple state level civil rights measures passed across the country (paving the way for the 1964 Civil Rights Act to be passed by LBJ). He wasn't perfect and some of his strategies didn't work as hoped, but Eisenhower did more to move America toward an integrated society than any president since Ulysses S. Grant.

      Funny how they show the clip of him stating that "mob rule, cannot be allowed to overwrite the decisions of our courts". That tells you he was a leader who believed in the rule of law. If he was alive today, he will likely support securing our borders, supporting our man and women in uniform, first responders, and more importantly, he would have decried the rioting and looting antifa and BLM are presently engaging on, what was that quote again!? 6:04
