WHAT a BLAST being shown this! I've never seen anyone go page by page through anything of mine like this before, commenting in real time (and fortunately enjoying it!)!
FYI, some trivia: Kurt threw out the invite (LOVE his writing!), and my hero Tom Brevoort- but locked it in for me by telling me they could get the GREAT Joe Sinnott to ink me(?!)! That sealed the deal BIG TIME! I actually drew as many "Kirbyisms" as possible in this baby where I expected Joe to do his Kirby/collab thing and make it look like one of his late 60s Kirby FF books. For whatever reason he chose to ink everything as if HE drew it, ignoring/avoiding my "Kirbyisms".
Also, he inked/added lots of lines that I didn't draw. I always prefer more economical line work, but THRILLED to everything Joe did, not feeling territorial at all, fully aware of what a rare and wonderful gift this was. But also critical of how much older the "teenage" characters looked from his added detail in the faces. Looking back at the pages with you here, that really jumped out at me, even more than it did back in the day- and then you commented on it as well. Yikes! Mostly, when revisiting older work, it's impossible to not speculate on what I'd do differently now in my endless effort to improve.
Still pinch myself that this happened, (Joltin' Joe inked me!!!) and all the wonderful things that have followed.
    Thank you for this!

Mike, such a pleasure and we plan on checking out a whole lot more of your work on the channel. Would you be interested in zooming with us for a shoot interview? Please email us at cartoonist.kayfabe@gmail.com and we can set something up.

@@CartoonistKayfabe I've yet to take the "Zoom dive". Mirrors and cameras have a hard time capturing me ;'P
One other thing that thrilled me about this project: CLASSIC NEWSPRINT!!!
This is as close as I ever came to completely creating a comic that could have been a part of the comic collection of my childhood.

@@CartoonistKayfabe Btw, dunno if this is the place to say it but, HUGE fan! Youse guys are so innovative and thrill with everything you do. But this nifty thing here had escaped me til now. Working with Jim is always a kick! And the Madman piece he did for us is one of our very VERY favorites!

What a nice surprise to see you in the comments here! I’m quite sure there are a bunch of fans in our little community that would appreciate a shoot interview. You couldn’t find a better audience. We really care about comics and the people who make them. These guys wouldn’t waste your time with dumb questions either. Here’s hoping you reconsider!

Wow! Great to see your reply! I was surprised to read that you don't Zoom since I remember you once said that you had developed a fear of flying which kept you in the Northwest. Did that fear ever go away?

mike allreds joint on silver surfer is one of my favorite things marvel has ever put out.i love how clean and wholesome it is when everything was super dark. I love the outlaw and dark stuff aswell. but mike allreds art just plucks my heartstrings(especially when Laura does the colours)

I love the Madman Superman crossover he did, it has that super fun "yes, this is a super hero comic book" vibe

Absolutely agree, that run on the Surfer is some of the best comics from Marvel in 3-4 decades at least. They need to get that omnibus back in print!

I need more Allred on the channel. Maybe Solo or Madman Atomic Comics #3, which still blows my mind.

Well now that Kevin Maguire is brought up, it would be fascinating to see the Kayfabe take on something so extremely different and unique as those Giffen/ DeMatteis/ Maguire books, or some of the other facial expression/ gesture focused artists like Adam Hughes, Ty Templeton, Nathan Fox, Fiona Staples, Alan Davis. Or other super stylized artists like extremely designy people like JH Williams III/ Seth Fisher or super-rough expressionists like Jeff Lemire and Matt Kindt.

As much as I love Madman (2nd favorite comic character after Spidey) I wish he did a nice extensive run on the webhead during this time. Then again we probably wouldn't have gotten so many great Madman comics. Maybe in a alternate universe

Dang, I wish I hadn't missed this one! I didn't even look at the Marvel/DC racks in 1996, but I'd had Madman in my hold since Madman Adventures.

I would love to see you guys go over Silver Surfer #11 by Slott and Allred at some point. Laura Allred on colors was on point for Slott's Silver Surfer run.

This is fantastic! I didn't know this book existed but so glad to be aware of it. Definitely on my list. I have a few random issues from this title and enjoy them very much but haven't made an effort of getting more of them. That's changed!

I love Allred's style. I think he's perfect for a certain kind of Marvel approach, because his style works so well with sequential storytelling. I dumped out of cape shtuff when it was all single-page panels of one dude in Lulu Lemons punching another. (i.e., the 90s.) I wish I had come across this earlier.

  • @toddevangelista

Almost daily I think about Busiek throwing out the idea that the artist already paid money for, to replace it with the Time Traveling Mummy from Amazing Fantasy #15! The origin of Spidey has been reprinted many times, but the back-up stories have never been reprinted, meaning that the artist would have to buy an original 1st appearance of Spider-man! Wow!

Excellent job, guys! Untold tales of Spidey was a great book ,not just for its price but telling stories of Parker’s high school years! Spidey clone nonsense was in the main title aka absolute crap! Thanks for excellent choices of comics etc to review! Thanks again!

Just found that one randomly in the back issue bins two years ago and loved it. You can really see how much Sinnott adds to the art and it feels like classic Marvel.

I've held onto this one since I got in 96. Allred is amazing to me. Recently acquired the Madman 20th anniversary huge hardcover. You couldn't slap the smile off my face. Super pumped about X-Cellent finally coming out. If you come across his Bacardi rum history comic he did with Warren Ellis. That would make my year. That's my holy grail book

When the Chef popped up at the end of the spider-man comic it reminded me of the Element Man story that Mike drew for Wednesday Comics. Would love to see the guys do a read through of those wednesday comics issues that DC put out a few years ago.

Love that comic, a really unusual issue but what a joy to read. Printer plates ... regularly available on 30th Century comics website, must admit, not sure I would want one as they apparently weigh a ton.

I've think that the Submariner panel looks weird because it's a homage to a Bill Everett splash, can't recall the specific issue but that Allred image certainly bring it to mind. Anyone else know the image I'm thinking of?
