      @TheOfficialSteelReign 3 года назад +3

      @@TheCancelCult I honestly don't care, I'd spend the money. I struggle hard with matching colors. I'm not truly colorblind, but my ability to decipher shades is seriously compromised. It would be nice to know for sure what my parameters are without needing to guess somewhere between 40ppm and 180ppm.

    • @TheCancelCult
      @TheCancelCult 3 года назад +2

      @@TheOfficialSteelReign it's not really made for personal use is the thing. It's only really useful if you have a large number of tanks on the same filter. The reagent comes in preloaded discs. Each disc is $3. That gets pretty costly if you have just a few tanks.
      I get what you're saying though. I have a very hard time telling one color from another as well. It's not so much about you or me though. Bringing a new product to market is very expensive and the average consumer buys cheap test strips. Let's be honest, most people don't even buy test strips until they think they have a problem.
      API would have a very hard time selling enough of these to recoup their cost.

  • @dusk1947
    @dusk1947 3 года назад

    Excellent. I want one!
    The reality in this hobby is that we change water, just to change water. Few bother to take the time and understand the hard chemistry of their water.
    Why? It's a pain, it's slow, cumbersome, and prone to error. It's easier to just change the water when you likely don't need to, just to be safe.
    And while their are other solutions like Hanna checkers, they are prohibitively costly for most freshwater hobbyist's.
    This tool is a fantastic addition to the hobby. TY for the coverage and awareness. I'll be getting one the moment they are available to consumers.
    I think the data logger is by far the best feature. A multiple parameter test is a Huge benefit. But, as a hobbyist, I regularly test my system. And I only maintain one display tank, so it's not that hard. However, I frequently forget to record my results. Having it log results is what makes me want one. The ability to display a trend line in data is fantastic.
    Also as a soil and water conservationist, I cannot emphasize enough the advantage of actually knowing your parameters; rather than trying to guess when their is a problem. But, that is a later conversation for when hobbyists' can easily test their water chemistry.

    I have owned salt/fresh water tanks for 55 years. Nice automated devices arriving. I have used master kits but the strips are ballpark enough for me. I have 2 160 gallon salt and one 120 fresh tank for Discus all with sumps. You can never over water change. My discus are big eaters so weekly 90% water change. The other 2 tanks are 20% water change biweekly with 50% once per month. Very rarely need to check water parameters. If any problems though, first to check. If I start another tank, I will use substrate/bio media from establish tank, throw in bacteria jump starter, snd add fish right away. I may perform every other day water changes until the cycle settles/no parameter problems. Water changes are one of the most important things you can perform for stable, healthy aquariums. My tab water is fine even with salt. I do not use RO water. What I have noticed, through the years, is that you can not visually tell if your parameters are in the danger zone. You must have a water tester. Easy to be fooled, the water looks great, and you start medications. In fact, the fish are sick because of the water

    The more plastic we make the more it hurts the oceans. The more electric used the less we have.

    We use things every day we should not what about a product that is natural. That would color me impressed.
    It seems like a nice idea and im sure it doesn't use much battery or electric junk.
    On the other hand it recommends more products which may not always be needed an a new person to the hobby would run out an spend money where it may not be needed.

    Thank you for the video! Very in depth.
    I think it has some value in that it can test calcium and phosphates. That way you know your water, and can REALLY dial in the plants and nutrients. It's also useful when starting the Nitrogen cycle. However, once you have your tank up and running, it loses value quick. You don't need to know EXACTLY what level your hardness or nitrates are on a week to week basis; you only need to be in your acceptable range. For that, test strips are ideal. They're quick and the price per test can't be beat.
    This kit seems like overkill for the AVERAGE fish keeper. You'd have to take it out of storage, plug it in, open a test pack (which probably costs a pretty penny), wait for the results, the clean up and put everything away again. With the test strip, you just open a bottle, take a strip, dunk it in water and a minute later you have your result. Is it precise? No, but at this point you're simply confirming what your eye test is telling you. Are your fish acting normal? Then chances are your water parameters are normal too. If your tank is setup correctly, your water shouldn't be changing much to begin with.

    The Aquaspin would be a great addition to an aquarium-cleaning service. Since it's pricey for the average fish keeper, some enterprising aquarium services provider could add this water testing to their home aquarium services. Easy to test, show the results to the customer, and they know exactly what you're going to do to fix any problems/issues. Or you could just do the testing & let the customer fix their own tanks since they'd know exactly what to do. Plus with 1-time use cartridges & pipettes no cross contamination of specimens or tank water. Sounds like a $$$ maker.

    Thank you for this! Been searching for a solution on RUclips for this, can't see most colors. I've stuck with 3 super understocked highly planted walstad style 20gal tanks I let establish FOREVER. Been scared to try other style tanks/fish because I couldn't test my water without looking like an idiot at petco all the time 😑

    I can't wait for a small home version of that. I used to test religiously but don't any more unless something's wrong. My kit is mostly expired now and it's kind of expensive to replace. A digital water analyzer may be too far out of my price range too though.

      I do not have any affiliate link or kickbacks, and was not paid. I actually reached out to them to get the aquaspin as I think it will be useful when traveling as well as around the fishroom.

    Pretty cool! Prices I have seen thrown around are $1200. Not sure on the disc prices. At that price, great for LFS.

    The price tag on that thing. As of now I don’t seeing the average fish keeper getting this at that price but for breeders or stores I can see but hopefully after a few yrs they make it more affordable to the hobby

    With increasing interest in the hobby, I wonder if we'll see a company like Taylor get into this business. They make photometers for pool water-- fill the tube, add reagent, put tube in machine and get the number.

    Digital testing is a great idea especially for those who don't test. With pool testers running $200ish I think it will be a long time before it will be affordable for aquariums. Like 10 to 15 years unless someone figures out how to make a better cheaper tester. Thanks for showing us!

    This is AWESOME !!! I have 14 aquariums and like you do not test as much as I should because of the time is takes. Sure hope they make it available to consumers SOON !!! I bet it will cost a pretty penny !! I use all API products !! Sure wish they would send me one !! LOL

    Thank you for this Rachel. I happen to be one who tests their water and it is so time consuming and exacting. So many bottles/reagents, glass tubes, lids, etc to buy and they get outdated if not used in time. I surely hope this testing unit can enter the mainstream market and do so exponentially. It sure beats all the sticky notes on the tanks, tubs, totes etc to keep track of which results are for which tank.

    Price
    price of consumables (disks and reagents if any)
    What do you think a LFS would charge to test water with this?

    Test kits are great on sunny days but winter in Scotland, most the of the day isn't very bright and reading test colours is almost impossible. The colour of your room light also affects how the test colour will look.
    Hopefully these sort of machines become cheaper and more available in future.

    Does it have to be calibrated regularly? I know the Neptune apex system, reef bot and alkatronic for reefs all require regular calibration, although they all run automatically several times a day. Looks good though.

    I’m a new fish keeper, well let me rephrase that, I recently have been woken up to being a better fish keeper. I have the big kit you mention in the beginning, I like it, but it’s daunting to think, oh man I should test my water in my tanks, and I think to myself oh man that’s going to take me forever. What a neat tool to have! You can come down and test my water for me! 😉

      Try the tetra all in one test strips, although alot of stuff by tetra is subpar their test strips are proven to be the best, easily acquired , test strips out there. Plus as Cory has shown us you can cut them in half and get 50 test per bottle. The API master test kit is obviously more accurate but for a quick and painless check up on the main parameters the tetra strips are the way to go. Trust me i got over 20 tanks and doing it literally a drop at a time then waiting the said time would literally take me the entire day vs a dip and one minute of waiting lol

    I wish API would partner with one of the major retailers to make this device something they had at all their locations that sell fish, like a Petco or PetSmart, so that you could just pay the price of a disc and take a sample of your water to get accurately tested!
    That seems like a much more realistic scenario, rather than API releasing a product like this to the public or at least one that is affordable.
