I was about to say. If you have pest snails, just get a pea puffer. Most effective way to eradicate snails lol. I actually recommend starting a colony of pest snails first before adding puffers, especially those snails that are prolific breeders. Your puffer will always have food then.

    Great video.
I had a problem with buying the wrong plants (ludwigia repens) for my lighting and ended up with lots of diatoms and dead leaves.
Combine that with apparently overfeeding fussy fish (some prefer flakes over NLS pellets) and now I'm constantly removing 10 or more bladder snails a day from my 20g high tank.
I picked up one of those ISTA snail traps and am planning on getting some amano shrimp to assist with getting the bottom cleaned up.
My nerite snails are doing a good job on the glass.
Vacuuming and 50% water change each week.
Really hoping that the trap and shrimp will do the trick.
Hunting bladder snails with a turkey baster is a good time killer though ...

    Keep in mind.
The amount of ponds you find (natural little ponds) are full of snails and healthy plants .. its all about a balance.
I dont think any snails are pest unless they hurting fish with parasites.
as for plants, they usual only eat dead leaves.

The comment section is full of cringe. The bladder snails have reproduced in my EMPTY tank for months and there's been no feeding at all. The only thing they can be relying on at this point is algae growth, and they're obviously only skimming over that enough to get enough to grow and reproduce, repeat process for each snail. They don't even take the algae completely off of anything they happen to crawl over, to the point there is no visual evidence they did it at all. I have a total of three small live plants in the last few weeks they've eaten the rotten leaves off of, and then didn't complete that job at all, actually leaving most of the rot to move on and....repopulate.
And you guys can "embrace" these snails all you want to. I actually like trumpets myself. But PLEASE WARN your potential victims of the fact you grew your plants in a tank with these snails if you sell them or take them to the pet store. Mine came in on plants and I was not warned and needless to say, wasn't impressed by the seller at all afterwards.

I love snails, they eat the extra food and help keep smaller tanks clean and less likely to crash. I think they're cute too. Also if you're going to eradicate your snails, remember to feed less food because there won't be snails left to eat it all and it will rot and produce ammonia. (Yes that's why you had so many snails, you were overfeeding.)

The water in my area is so soft that bladder snails do not manage to reproduce and they die pretty quickly. This happened with bladder snails that came along with some plants I ordered. While it does drastically limit the amount of species of fish I can keep. It also makes snail pest control very easy :D

Khulis wont harm the larger snails. What they do is eliminate all the eggs and very small snails before their shells harden. They are only a tool to manage pest snails in a manner thats beneficial to your system. Nor will you see them do this as they hunt when its totally dark. Its what they do in nature. So all you have to do is remove the larger ones and your problem is solved. Water bottle trap is still the easiest way to catch adults. Clown loaches kill every snail, inducing those you want to keep.

I walked in to my local fish store, and saw a tank they had that was infested with Malaysian trumpet snails, but it just so happened that I had spent weeks looking online for some for sale with no luck. You should’ve seen the look on the owners face when I told him that I actually wanted them on purpose. 😂 I got a small number for free, and I’ve had them for years along with some blue leopard rams horn with only 1 outbreak. 10/10 would do it again

  • @dr5820
    @dr5820 5 лет назад +4

I had Malaysian trumpet snails sneak into an aquarium years ago, had several aquariums since, and the offspring of those original few are still going today... Even after having no tanks for a long time, they survived in a bucket of gravel in the garage for a very long time.
Now I have a large turtle and American cichlid set up, my musk turtle spends his days digging for snails. The snails are also a huge help on breaking down solids. Have also put a few in my African tank.
The thing is with these snails, you don't even know they're there, until you clean your canister and start picking them out.

I like snails, the more the better.
I have had Cichlids for a long time, which meant I could never have snails. Now I have another tank (10 gallons) with plants, shrimp, and snails and I like the snails just as much as I thought I would. I bought some Ramshorn Snails and they are bigger than I thought; they lay eggs but they don't seem to hatch. I bought a plant and got three teeny tiny itty bitty Malaysian Trumpet Snails, and I would like to have a lot more and bigger ones. I bought some Mystery Snails and those are very interesting to watch eat, and the Gold ones are very outgoing, and one of them laid some eggs last night. 🎉 I also have two Spixi Snails, which are much smaller and slower and not outgoing at all, and one laid a few eggs, maybe 20, on a plant and I have spent weeks waiting for them to hatch, but nothing so far. They might be eating the Ramshorn snail eggs, I don't know. And I have some pond snails that I caught myself and they lay eggs on everything and they hatch. I even have a golden-shelled one, which I hope will have more. If I could find other kinds of snails, then I would get them too.

I definitely need a little clean up crew in my 5 gallon planted tank. I think I am going to add MTS and ramshorn to it. I am the worst at overfeeding. I only have a betta in there at the moment, so when I feed frozen foods there tends to be more than I like leftover, or it hides in the nooks and crannies of my eco complete substrate. I have noticed some detritus worms (which tells me there is too much leftover food). In the future I may add a Nerite variety (but a little unsure at the moment). I think I may add a few other fish as well to help eat the food (something small that goes well with a betta).

Thanks Rachel. That was really helpful. Got a few bladder snails when I added plants to my newly cycled tank. I left them as I figured they would help clear up some algae. They have done a good job, but have increased in number very quickly. So some of them have got to go. Was thinking of adding a pea puffer, but I don't think it will be a good fit for my community tank in the long run. The plants seem healthy, so going try increasing my maintenance, and cutting back on my feeding ( have been away from the hobby for 30+yrs, so it will take me a minute to figure that out. )

Having a problem with ramshorn snails. The population is huge so I cut back on feeding and they started eating my plants, particularly my Rosaefolia. The leaves look bright and healthy, but they got tiny holes in them from the snails. My guess is a snail would rather eat a healthy plant than starve to death, which makes sense.
Maybe the key was to never let the population get that big?

Yep, I hand pick the bladder snails out and keep the rams horns usually. some of mine have a shiny bronze shell. pretty I think

This was excellent! Thank you!! I had my community tank controlled with 1 mystery and a few nerites. Bought some plants at the aquarium and noticed 24 hours later TONS of what looked like baby snails on the log the java was on so I immediately took it out and returned to store. Needless to say, I suddenly started finding what I now know to be ramshorn and bladder snails everywhere. My tank looks amazing but I do have plants that are suddenly not doing well so this was great info for me to take some steps. Love snails but of course don’t need hundreds and hundreds of them. So again thanks for the info!!

I don't know what kind of terminator snails I had, but snail traps had too large a gap for them to get trapped, so it only really was a food source for them. They ate ALL my plants, and when I put assassin snails in, one day I woke up to hollowed out assassin snail shells, and half a dozen of those pests in and around each shell. The largest of them were not even two tenths of an inch, while the typical size was one tenth of an inch.

Great video! I was wondering though, as a keeper of many snail eating loach species, is there a species of ornamental snail that could safely be kept with them? I was researching the larger sulawesi rabbit snails, but I didn't see much info pertaining to their compatibility.

I like those 'mini' ramshorns myself and I thank you so much for the species name! I've been trying to find it for ages. Never seen one larger than about 1/4". They're unobtrusive and do no harm I can see. Most of the one I have are red with clear shells and given that I keep mostly very minute fish species, they're an appropriate size, especially in a nano tank :-).
Standard ramshorns are very useful, I think. I read a neat article and later heard a lecture on using them with Cory cat eggs as clean up crew in place of using antifungals like Meth blue. They don't eat healthy eggs but do eat any fungus that may appear. Natural fungus control, how can you not love that?
Btw, I find there are more than two MTS type snails. I have at least 3 types so far. One of them grows rather large, some to more than 1.5 inches long with a foot close to a half inch in diameter. At first I thought they were rabbit snails but they aren't, they're MTS or something very closely related. Their shells are a dull olive colour without stripes but do have dots on them. Another type is a rich dark mahogany brown with a deeply ridged shell; greatly resembles a baby Orange Poso rabbit snail but it only grows to roughly 3/4" in length. They're very dark in the body too and rather attractive really; plus, they don't show up on a dark substrate the way the most common MTS does, especially the one with the light beige shell and rusty stripe marks.
The Limnea species of snail that you mention, does it have a light grey-colour body? I see snails like that now and then but they have appeared to be major plant nibblers and thus I have not encouraged them. The ones I see have a pale grey body, pale grey shell and short, fat tentacles. They grow a lot larger than the bladder snail does, certainly, but I've never allowed one to grow to full size. They are slower to reproduce, for sure.

I had a problem with the Malaysian trumpets. I had a very heavily planted Aquarium and purchase my plants from a trusted source. However at a local fish store picking up ghost shrimp for food I impulsively bought a beautiful mother plant Amazon sword. Wipe down the leaves put it in there started growing and within a week hundreds and hundreds of tiny lice sized snails everywhere the tank again heavily planted could only gravel vacuum certain areas of the aquarium they quickly overtook that tank then via my water change tube / - aquarium siphon they transferred to all seven of my aquariums. The 55 within a few months they date between the glass and silicone so badly to certain algae grows underneath the Silicon that tank leaked my 125 they did the same the leak was below the gravel line and below the dirt because all of my tanks are dirt and tanks anyway I'm down to just a 55 gallon tank over ran by snails so I recently uploaded a video of my final solution for that I drain the aquarium to just above the gravel line an added 4 large bottles of a hydrogen peroxide and it killed every snail in the aquarium and I'm now rebuilding the aquarium to get it heavily planted like my old tanks were. The peroxide was my last and only hope and it worked beautifully

I don't think snails are bad for your tank, and I don't think Rachel said they were. She even mentioned a couple of her favourites! Some people think they are, of course, but not everyone. That's why stores sell them! It's only if you let the numbers get out of control - usually through overfeeding - that it really becomes a problem.

This is a great video chicky! When I was new to this hobby I did get lots of snails because I was ridiculously over feeding my tank I learned tons of lessons in the planted tank hobby. What I have learned is all of these snails are a potential threat but if you can not go crazy feeding your fish they all can be beneficial I have three or more species of thes guys and they are kept in check by my every three day feeding regimen. In the past I used to throw in a loach to bring them down in population but now I just do not feed the tank as much and the use of shrimps as cleaners usually out eat these snails so the tanks don't get crazy with them anymore. I have apple snails, trumpets, rams horns the rams get big fast but if you slow the feeding they will stall or slow right down. I love fish tanks and the beauty they bring to your home snails are helpers for me they keep the algae down and my glass clean as crystal Balance with these creatures is key.

I had my bad experience with trumpet snails many years ago. They spiked. I looked in the tank one evening and my 40 gal was simply peppered with the b##tards. That was back in 2011. I came up with a most efficient remedy that will wipe them out completely with no returns. This method doesnt involve other animals to eat them, chemicals or creative traps. This is what you do. 1. REMOVE ALL YOUR FISH FROM YOUR TANK. 2. USING A PYTHON OR SIMILAR TAP DRIVEN SYPHON HOSE, DRAIN YOUR TANK 100 %. 3. NOW REVERSE FLOW ON THE HOSE AND CRANK UP HEAT USING SCALDING HOT WATER. 4. USING THE EDGE OR LIP OF THE SYPHON HOSE RUN THE WATER UNDER THE FRAME OR LIP OF THE TOP SUPPORT OF YOUR TANK ,TAKING CARE TO RUN HOT WATER ALL ALONG THE HIGHEST REACHES OF THE GLASS. LET THE SCALDING WATER SIMPLY TRICKLE DOWN INTO THE FLOOR AND GRAVEL OF YOUR TANK. THE IDEA IS TO MAKE SURE THE HEAT COMES INTO CONTACT WITH EVERY INCH OF YOUR AQUARIUM WHICH LEADS US TO THE NEXT STEP. 5. DISESEMBLE YOUR FILTER AND ITS COMPONENTS PLACING THEM IN A LARGE BUCKET, A SINK OR EVEN IN THE TANK YOUR TREATING IF THERE IS STILL ROOM ENOUGH. POUND IT WITH THE SCALDING WATER SUBMERGING IT WHEREVER POSSIBLE TO ENSURE THE HEAT COMES INTO CONTACT WITH ITS ENTIRE SURFACE. 6. NOW YOU HAVE COMPLETELY KILLED ALL THE SNAILS. NOW THEY ARE SITTING IN THE GRAVEL BEGINNING TO BREAK DOWN. NOW YOU MUST CONSIDER YOUR OPTIONS. FIRST I WILL OFFER THE SIMPLE ANSWER THEN I WILL TELL YOU WHAT I CHOSE TO DO. BOTH WILL WORK. SIMPLY REMOVE THE GRAVEL FOR DISSPOSAL OR LET IT SIT IN A RESERVOIR OF ITS OWN PERIODICALLY CHANGING OUT THE WATER FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS UNTILL THE DECOMPOSITION OF THE DEAD SNAILS IS COMPLETE. AT THIS POINT YOUR FISH ARE BACK IN A GRAVELESS SNAILESS TANK. HERE IS WHAT I DID. REFIL THE TANK LEAVING THE GRAVEL AND SNAILS IN. BRING FISH BACK IN THE AQUARIUM IN BAGS TO ACLIMATE THEM TO TEMP . 7. NOW YOUR FISH ARE BACK TO NORMAL RELEASED INTO THE TANK BUT YOU KNOW BELOW THEM IN THE GRAVEL LURKS A TOXIC TIME BOMB. THE TRICK IS WATER CHANGES. (REMINDER ) USE THIS METHOD ON A WEEKEND OR WHEN YOU HAVE A COUPLE OF DAYS TO CONCENTRATE YOUR ENERGY AND ATTENTION TO THIS PROBLEM. AFTER 3 OR 4 80 TO 90 PERCENT WATER CHANGES OVER THE NEXT 48 HRS YOUR FISH WILL BE FINE AND YOUR TANK WILL BE OR REMAIN SNAIL FREE UNTIL G-D FORBID THERE IS ANOTHER INSTANCE WHERE THESE BUGGERS ARE REINTRODUCED INTO YOUR TANK AGAIN. THE SHELLS WILL REMAIN BUT NO BIG DEAL. (AFTERNOTE) THIS TECHNIQUE WORKS LIKE A CHARM BUT THERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT FACTORS TO CONSIDER. THIS TECHNIQUE IS NOT DESIGNED WITH THE PROSPECT OF PRESEVING PLANTS IN MIND. YOU WOULD HAVE TO START PLANTS AGAIN FROM A HOPEFULLY SNAIL FREE SAMPLE. PERHAPS YOU COULD TREAT THE PLANTS SEPARATELY WITH COPPER OR WHATEVER IN ANOTHER RESERVOIR OR TANK BEFORE PUTTING THEM BACK IN. BE SURE TO HAVE A GOOD WATER TREATMENT PRODUCT ON HAND WHILE DOING YOUR WATER CHANGES. WHO WOULDNT RECOMMEND (SEACHEM SAFE) ? OUTSIDE OF TRYING TO SAVE ONES PLANTS I SIMPLY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO FATHOM THE IDEA OF GOING THROUGH SO MUCH TROUBLE TO DEAL WITH THESE PESTS. THIS METHOD WORKS, AND IT PREVENTS RETURNS. HOPE THIS HELPS. IT SURE HELPED ME.

I've had never ending issues with Malaysian Trumpet Snails. Yes, yes, I know overfeeding = snails. BUT, I have had MTS sitting in a fishless, mostly empty aquarium for MONTHS and they will still be breeding like effing rabbits. They are like roaches. I wouldn't mind them if they were so out of control but MTS at least seem to be able to reproduce like mad even in the absence of food, clean water, or really anything. :(

I've recently established a cherry shrimp population in my 5ft tank. In no time at all, I have 3 species of snails (I bought a lot of plants for my shrimp) and they are all breeding absolutely in no time at all! I have hundreds, LITERALLY HUNDREDS of baby snails from all 3 snail species. I need to cull these guys before all their offspring start breeding too, there are way too many for me to just take out, squish, ect. And the snail traps would get my shrimp too. My shrimp are breeding so there are limited options for me. I have no idea what I can do about this, I'm ok with some snails, but this is crazy. I can't even take away food, I have baby shrimp and preggers shrimp mumas who need the food. HELP

How did my shrimp tank get bladder and ramshorn snails in it?
    Backstory....
I haven't had ANY of those in my tank for 6 months. I've had trumpet snails and shrimp. I just recently saw bladder and RH snails in there. Literally the only thing different is i got my Indian almond leafs from a different vendor. The leaf was boiled for almost 3 min then put in.
So, how is this happening?? Is it from the leaf? If so how when i boiled it....

Very helpful video. I setup my DIY acrylic tank a couple months ago and now have a pond snail population in it. The tank is planted with various val species, java fern, anubias, and some bolbitus. I usually just let the snails live in the tank. It seems that they help a bunch with newly planted tanks since a lot of the plants that I use seem to die back when first introduced to my aquariums. I've also noticed that the longer the aquarium has been setup the smaller the population of snails I'll have remaining. I wasn't sure which snail I had until I watched you video. Without a doubt they are the pond snail so I now have three different pest snails in three different aquariums lol. Trumpets in my bolivian ram tank. These were actually put there on purpose by me. My favorite pest snail. Bladder snails in my Buenos aires tetra tank although there are very few in there. Now pond snails in the platinum angel tank. Not sure if I'll just leave them be and see if their numbers dwindle over time or start to remove them using your trap method or manually but great to know the options. Thank you for the information. I really appreciate all that you do.

Just found pest ramshorns. Was hoping not to have to remove/kill snails because I like them which is why we chose nerites for our community tank. The problem with keeping the tank clear of algae and detritus to control their population is that our otocinclus, dwarf bamboo shrimp, pinocchio shrimp and nerites eat that stuff and I want to make sure they have enough. Oh well, I guess we're stuck with manual removal to keep the hitchhikers in check.
