The worst punishment you can impose is to confiscate and sell their cars. They don't care about County Jail, many of their friends are already in jail so they just join the party. My guess is that everyone arrested has already been released from pretrial confinement (unless they have outstanding warrants) - if you return the cars they will just go back and do it again because they have no fear of legal consequences except the loss of their precious cars.

I remember being caught at a sideshow with no license the police blocked the only 3 exits roads .They started impounding cars and writing tickets then somebody had pulled out a pair of bolt cutters and cut the private fence next to us and at least 10 -15 cars got away including me before patrol units where able to block it off .This was 20 years ago it's many years since I stopped going

The city has submitted a proposal that the funds from the auctioned vehicles should be used to establish a special blue ribbon investigation panel to study the impact of the public outcry over the confiscated vehicles. Preliminary unsubstantiated findings suggest that a lengthy protracted study, with greatly increased funding from future auctions will be necessary to assess the feasibility of the initial vehicle confiscations.
Oakland should run a sting by setting up the situation out in a warehouse district with the law enforcement ready to swarm in and arrest the people and take their cars. This will also stop how the people communicate setting up the side shows. Also reconfigure the shot caller microphones to key onto wheel burnouts. It can be done.
I'd like to know how many of these side show cars are stolen. Can you imagine someone stealing your car and wrecking it at a side show, then walking away?
