Tallow and Lard Soaps, Mistakes Were Made (Soapmaking on the Homestead Pt 2)

This is what my actual process of soap making looks like. Even after 20 years of soapmaking, you can make a recipe you aren't super familiar with, and not have it come out right. This is part two of two videos (the first talking about all I've learned about soapmaking on the homestead).

Always ALWAYS run any recipe you find through a lye calculator to double check the math before making your soap. Even recipes found in published books! If you change out ANY of the oils/fats in these recipes, RECALCULATE THE LYE AMOUNT!
Beginning LARD Recipe for Homesteaders
All measurements by WEIGHT
30% lye solution, 5% superfat, .5 oz/pound oils for fragrance
Water = 150 g
Lye (NaOH) = 64 g
Coconut oil (25%) = 113 g
Lard (rendered pig fat) (25%) = 113 g
Olive Oil (50%) = 227 g
Fragrance (optional) = 14 g (.5 oz, about 1 tbsp)
Soap at between 90 and 100 degrees F

Is it all right to mix pork fat and beef tallow in a recipe?

Yes, absolutely. But you would want to plug each one into your lye calculator as a separate entry. They have slightly different SAP values.
