Marilyn vos Savant - Truth and Bias

- Marilyn vos Savant discusses the idea of truth, and how people mistake bias for perspective. Maturity and intelligence help people to recognize the bias as well as the underlying truth. That's why maturity and intelligence are very useful tools that people can and should develop. These intellectual tools help us to learn objective facts about the world around us so that we can then make accurate and productive decisions.
Wise words from Ms. vos Savant, "open debate without belligerence is the dawn of understanding"
I think she's saying a lot that people aren't giving her credit for. She's saying that people who are influential in public policy should be able to rationally defend their decisions and thinking process before the public. She's implying it's not enough to merely elect our leaders and then vote them out if they do something we disagree with. They must convince the people of their initiatives, and gain their approval through argument, and must do so continuously while in power.
That’s what they do, its called campaigning
@Jeremy Debates are not staged and the audience/voters regularly ask non-scripted questions, often challenging the candidates. Its not perfect but hardly absent. As for truth only being the dominant social narrative, that’s postmodern nonsense.
@Jeremy Everything you said is incorrect and postmodernism is an invention by well-off academics to keep the status quo and fool pple like yourself into nihilism
Any forum of due process is subject to staging and manipulation eg court of law where the best lawyer typically wins these days while a non lawyer has little hope of succeeding w persuasion outside the rule set. So yes it happens in political debates and parliamentary challenges too.
@@thedoubtfuls That’s a different debate
The interviewer is also screaming Brilliant
That guy had no idea what she was talking about.! Great mind.! 👍
Thank you Marilyn.....
It surprises me not that I have not heard more in the media about Marilyn vos Savant. Her desire for ethical scrutiny and integrity would be an anathema to the driven self-interested types that generally rise to the top of the media and politics. This is extremely unfortunate, but I am glad to have witnessed that intelligence and integrity are not mutually exclusive.
@slovakmath I didn't say they're unbiased. I said they're open about their bias. They're so open that even someone as dumb as Chomsky can see it. The more insidious kind of bias comes form sources like NPR and Chomsky. If you're still stuck way back there, you've got a lot of catching up to do. I recommend starting with vos Savant's book The Power of Logical Thinking. Chomsky is for people who need to have their ego stroked and told repeatedly that they're better than everyone else.
@slovakmath Actually, they seem to do it all the time. That's why I personally encourage people to try to get their news from a diverse set of sources. That's the best inoculation against both intentional and unintentional bias that I know of. People have to take some responsibility for themselves at some point in time, especially in a society as free as ours.
She's making an argument for the podcast format before it was a thing.
She is great.....
What an awesome woman, has a Marilyn Monroe Vibe about her too.
More Women should look up to her and Ruth Lawrence
This woman thought up the Joe Rogan podcast in 1986.
Excellent! Thanks for posting this
@slovakmath C-Span seems to do a pretty good job. I think news outlets have a responsibility to try to be as fair as possible. Honesty can go a long way. Bias can be kept to a minimum where it cannot be eliminated altogether, and admitted where it exists. (In other words, the failure to eliminate bias does not justify bad behavior.) And consumers should recognize that not everyone tries to be honest. Being open about your bias, as MSNBC and Fox News are, is almost as good.
doubt youre still active but this didnt age well with scully
guys, there are women that are intelligent!
@JohnJ2427 conglomerates open about their bias dont ignore mass information that contradicts their expressed reality which forms perfectly with their advertisers
@JohnJ2427 you say oh and wait...i dont understand english enough to understand what you are saying....however, yes i was referring to "example of a news conglomerate ignoring information that... ". I will read about this example tomorrow and respond
@marcphilos I agree. I do not know who started the habit of the interviewer or reporter talking a lot; I know Walter Cronkite did it quite a lot and sometimes one could not hear the news because of the racket he created!
@slovakmath I couldn't have ignored any questions twice because you didn't ask any questions in your first comment. I went back and read it again, even though it was from seven months ago, and there wasn't a single question mark. So I don't understand why you said that I ignored your question twice.
I wonder Miss Vos’ thoughts on the fact that in the age of the iphone and youtube everyone is an ‘influencer’. Her goal of bringing people to be queried in a tv atmosphere at the time might have seemed poignant but i think the reality of the iphone generation has shown that even these early tv influencers were no different than today’s instagram influencers, only the technology has changed. Posers now are no different than posers then or even in the days of radio being the medium.
On a side note, the nervous energy she has to speak rapidly shows these things have been questioned and rehearsed in her own internal dialogue for some time. Hopefully that bottled up nature does not lead to any unforeseen illnesses.
Re. her speaking quickly and nervously. That the interviewer interrupts her a lot may be a factor. He does it even in this short clip. The 57-minute conversation is unwatchable, he's so annoying. Cuts her off, instead of letting the person with the 225 IQ finish her thought in her own words.
@likoly And how do you know there is "no ultimate answer"?
@gr8vibes2 She acts smarter than she is? How do you act smarter than you are? You would have to have some other person of higher intelligence from which to form a behavioral template before you could 'act smarter' than yourself. If this is not the case how is she accomplishing your accusation?
"One" of the best interviews ever.
So many people might disappear out of the news quickly if you could get politicians reveal their true selves.
And famous Hollywood types, or athletes, and the like, should not be considered an important beacon for political positions.
Hot and smart... can't top that.
I don't see how her "acting" smart would have helped her on the IQ test, which she set a record on, by the way.
@JohnJ2427 I dont even know where to begin. I have never heard anyone claim that Fox or MSNBC are honest about bias. Anyone who makes this claim has never seriously thought about how these companies make money and how their media output is regulated by the people who give them money (advertisers).
@JohnJ2427 "so you think "nonbiased news" is even possible? please explain how." you ignored it once not twice
The dawn of understanding
the way of a high intelligence person speaks differently
I guess smart people don't mind being continuously interupted.
@slovakmath If Fox and MSNBC are trying to hide their bias, they're doing a really bad job of it. but you should begin with the point that bias in reporting should be kept to a minimum where it cannot be eliminated entirely. I don't know if you agree or disagree with that, but that's the answer to your question.
Ronald Reagan tried to hide them also lol
@FCMillwall81
This particular snippet doesn't say much of value. If you watch more of this interview, and you know how to spot it, you will see that this woman is the real deal. For more people who are genuine super-brains, look up Richard Feynman's videos and read Da Vinci's notebooks. The trick is to look not for complexity, but for accuracy, that your brain will recognize immediately. Unneeded complexity is just someone who WANTS to appear smart, but isn't quite there yet.
Well said. I've noticed a tendency for people to add syllables to words that don't need it. Commenter becomes commentator. Problem becomes problematic. Etc.
@TheTypicalGirl Okay, well, how do you know that?
@slovakmath Ya, I'm sure the problem is on HER end.
Whats sad is that I'm paying absolutely no attention to her words. I'm only paying attention to her looks :)
You probably have a low IQ and short attention span, pity 😊
@hauhau72 She certainly is.
Hard to listen to with him butting in.
@JohnJ2427 give me one example.
@mojitobanana Well, that is an idea.
@slovakmath Sure. Just the other day I encouraged a friend of mine to get her news from multiple sources. I even tweeted something similar last week.
Oh, you mean an example of a news conglomerate ignoring information that contradicts their preferred narrative. Okay, how about the New York Times ignoring the bankruptcy of Evergreen Solar, a company that got tons of green subsidies and some stimulus cash.
Wait, maybe I was right about what you meant the first time.
never trust a man who doesn't iron his shirt collar
she's hot
Because manipulation is manipulation weather good or bad.
Mostly comes off as patronizing!

@@Studentofgosset thanks sweety 😉
Not loud enough to hear
Hi
@scout6686 Probably the way you were conceived......
@JohnJ2427 Just keep ignoring my questions and refer to trivialities. And perhaps wouldn't you think it would be appropriate to ask why i responded after 7 months instead of assuming i spent the whole time thinking if that absurd and baseless statement you made? Maybe you can respond to my question now that you have ignored twice
I wonder she thinks about the truth contest
this is the kind of idealism that i had when I was like 12 years old...she seems very immature. and the fact that she thinks there is even such thing as non-biased news just goes to show you that high IQ does not imply intelligence
@slovakmath Seven months later? Really? Wow. You'd think that in seven months you'd have thought of something intelligent to say. Maybe another seven months will help.
STOP INTERRUPTING HER!
Dude keeps interrupting! I want to listen to the person with over 200 iq! Let her talk!
RIGHT?!!!!
Agree, it was very annoying. Also interviewers seem to overly elaborate their questions to her when it is unnecessary, she listens and grasps the question and is smart enough to ask for more if required. She does well to not be cancelled by his incessant talking, elaborating and stating the obvious. I think she must find a lot of communications to be very frustrating and not stimulating. But she is too well mannered to ever say she is bored by a person's inability to read their audience.
So she's rediscovered Socrates? Or perhaps Bill Moyers, or William F. Buckley?
Oh no ... she's discovered her own ego. She doesn't argue -- lol -- of course not, that would imply she was listening to someone other than herself.
@gr8vibes2 Even though her IQ was measured at 228..
TRANSPARENCY
she rants
damn right
And she (almost) never reappeared again. It’s a pitty
she seems to have a grandiose belief in her abilities, then at the end claims she doesn't.
I think she has a passion belief in pursuing the truth, irrespective of her self awareness of her own abilities.
@@ngle4246 it's insincere modesty for the sake of appearing modest.
many people are grandiose about themselves.
Marilyn is trying to get a message past the censors.
Truth is important ..
This fella"s trying to sound intelligent and filing miserably.
"filing" ? Were you the man in the video?😂
men are threatened by her
no.
what the hell are you talking about woman? you too man!
@JohnJ2427 oh so you think "nonbiased news" is even possible? please explain how. if you dont understand my comment then dont pretend to criticise it with such a weak statement like that. what kind of degenerate just goes to someone and says something like what you wrote, and not even attempt to offer an explanation or an argument relevant to ANYTHING i said?

Boring dribble.
+Powertuber1000 yeah, you like dat bunny show a lot more.
axlrosea675
This woman as with most women... has trouble expressing herself using linear rational thinking, they are normally all over the place and therefore rarely come up with anything new or profound.
+Powertuber1000 haha. seriously, you made my day. the trouble is, i agree with you, though political correctness tells me i should not. while many women are really intelligent, it is precisely their being 'all over the place' that sets them up for failure when thinking things through.
axlrosea675
This this is because their brains are highly connected between hemispheres and so are not compartmentalized for quite analytical abstract thought like the male brain.
Powertuber1000
yes...which can be annoying.
She will be banned in all social media platform for being smart.
Savant, although not unintelligent, certainly does not belong on any list of the worlds smartest people.
Her deviation IQ is 181. Assuming a perfectly normal distribution, that should be found in once in 30 million individuals. However, recent studies have shown that the intelligence distribution is both right-skewed and fat-tailed, making 1 in 200,000 a more reasonable approximate, and approximating 1,650 like her in the United States.
@@ngle4246 Both tests referred to in relation to her IQ score have been roundly criticised by professional psychologists. It is generally accepted by professionals and those who know anything about IQ that her real IQ number is far below what is popularly stated by the media and Marilyn herself. Marilyn has been very successful by exploiting these high figures and good luck to her for that.
@@ngle4246 there is no way that that is true
@@ngle4246 it can’t be right skewed; it’s a mechanism of the test. The test is annually updated to reestablish normal distribution by making sure the average iq stays at approximately 100. Therein, it is impossible for there to be such a significant skew. I would strongly criticize the sample that was used to accrue that data for whatever study you are citing.
and Jordan Peterson too is using stories
I want to have children with her :)
klakiti
she is a man
Guy is so bloated, needs to release some air
Some people say that the intelligencetest is a snapshot. Only for the moment. They are indifferent on each isseu. And unexpierenced in this field or issue. Impersonal. Putting themselves on a bias without to be so. People without familyties and hometies and social ties, ties with society. This should be a challinging and dynamic environment. Not agressive and competative. Such as I"m the best, and you are nothing.
She must be 200 years old by now, perfect to replace Biden 😂
@ClamCrunchy
Beeing religions and having low intelligence are coincident.
