  • Marilyn vos Savant discusses the idea of truth, and how people mistake bias for perspective. Maturity and intelligence help people to recognize the bias as well as the underlying truth. That's why maturity and intelligence are very useful tools that people can and should develop. These intellectual tools help us to learn objective facts about the world around us so that we can then make accurate and productive decisions.

    I think she's saying a lot that people aren't giving her credit for. She's saying that people who are influential in public policy should be able to rationally defend their decisions and thinking process before the public. She's implying it's not enough to merely elect our leaders and then vote them out if they do something we disagree with. They must convince the people of their initiatives, and gain their approval through argument, and must do so continuously while in power.

      @Jeremy Debates are not staged and the audience/voters regularly ask non-scripted questions, often challenging the candidates. Its not perfect but hardly absent. As for truth only being the dominant social narrative, that’s postmodern nonsense.

      Any forum of due process is subject to staging and manipulation eg court of law where the best lawyer typically wins these days while a non lawyer has little hope of succeeding w persuasion outside the rule set. So yes it happens in political debates and parliamentary challenges too.

    It surprises me not that I have not heard more in the media about Marilyn vos Savant. Her desire for ethical scrutiny and integrity would be an anathema to the driven self-interested types that generally rise to the top of the media and politics. This is extremely unfortunate, but I am glad to have witnessed that intelligence and integrity are not mutually exclusive.

    @slovakmath I didn't say they're unbiased. I said they're open about their bias. They're so open that even someone as dumb as Chomsky can see it. The more insidious kind of bias comes form sources like NPR and Chomsky. If you're still stuck way back there, you've got a lot of catching up to do. I recommend starting with vos Savant's book The Power of Logical Thinking. Chomsky is for people who need to have their ego stroked and told repeatedly that they're better than everyone else.

  • @JohnJ2427
    @JohnJ2427  13 лет назад +5

    @slovakmath Actually, they seem to do it all the time. That's why I personally encourage people to try to get their news from a diverse set of sources. That's the best inoculation against both intentional and unintentional bias that I know of. People have to take some responsibility for themselves at some point in time, especially in a society as free as ours.

    @slovakmath C-Span seems to do a pretty good job. I think news outlets have a responsibility to try to be as fair as possible. Honesty can go a long way. Bias can be kept to a minimum where it cannot be eliminated altogether, and admitted where it exists. (In other words, the failure to eliminate bias does not justify bad behavior.) And consumers should recognize that not everyone tries to be honest. Being open about your bias, as MSNBC and Fox News are, is almost as good.

    I wonder Miss Vos’ thoughts on the fact that in the age of the iphone and youtube everyone is an ‘influencer’. Her goal of bringing people to be queried in a tv atmosphere at the time might have seemed poignant but i think the reality of the iphone generation has shown that even these early tv influencers were no different than today’s instagram influencers, only the technology has changed. Posers now are no different than posers then or even in the days of radio being the medium.
    On a side note, the nervous energy she has to speak rapidly shows these things have been questioned and rehearsed in her own internal dialogue for some time. Hopefully that bottled up nature does not lead to any unforeseen illnesses.

      Re. her speaking quickly and nervously. That the interviewer interrupts her a lot may be a factor. He does it even in this short clip. The 57-minute conversation is unwatchable, he's so annoying. Cuts her off, instead of letting the person with the 225 IQ finish her thought in her own words.
