I used to shoot that same setup. I love the 4064 powder. I recently started using Hornady A-max and found even tighter grouping at 200 yards. Great video.
Generalist you have same very tight groups with your loads, great job i really enjoyed your video. IMR -4064 is a great powder in the .308 Winchester, my best load is 43.2 Grs using Winchester Brass & WLR primers. From the IMR Manual, velocity at 2606 FPS, from my Savage model 10, 24 inch bull barrel.
That’s strange, I have an 18” Ruger I was working up loads for. 168 FGMM is 2550 and 42.5gr 4064 is 2575. Odd that you’re not getting a whole lot more speed with that charge you’re using.
Well you see I wasn’t going for the highest velocity, but the tightest group. Which can be covered with a dime, factor specs call for 2650 FPS from a 24 inch barrel
VitoEb1978 Yeah absolutely that’s the way to do it. I was just surprised that you’re using a full length barrel and a pretty good charge of 4064 and it’s not going as fast as I thought it would.
Something else to keep in mind, we’re using different components, different rifles, even maybe different lot’s of powder. With all these variables there should be a different in our velocity’s
That top middle group had a flier because it was seeking a new POI down and left, like the next group to the right. Fliers are normally caused by an out of round piece of brass or being in the middle of a POI shift.
I think.168 gmm is about 43.5 grain with 8208. Im.pleased that you loaded lighter with the 4064 and still made out moa groups. Keep loading. I'm working with an 18 inch aero precision barrel in and ar10. Trying to build my own GMM ammo
Do you think that the high ES of the 41.0 grain load is an indicator of why you had the flyer and the 41.4 is the "right" charge and will tighten up with some seating depth test?
With my sav 10 fcp-k at 100 yards with my scope nightforce shv 5-20x56mm with a sierra 168 macthking my grouping is .250 to .400 max to a hot load 2800 fps on a chrono, shoot better to a hot load .I take imr 4064 and a varget primer fed gold medal macth 210 the seating depth is very serious.Have a muzzle brake on this rifle.Thank you for your video you,re a good shooter.
Why in the hell does EVERYONE I see xcept my Marines shoot off a bench without both hands on the gun? I know that Carlos Hathcock hung onto his 30-06 for dear life when he was doing some serious shooting. Move that damn bag as far forward as possible, and hang onto that gun with both hands! Then you'll be able to control the recoil ALOT better and believe it or not, your groups will shrink dramatically. With practice and patience you will find yourself to be ALOT more steady and the flyers will be a thing of the past. It's all about being in absolute control of the rifle, Semper Fi.... These rifles aren't near as heavy as what we use in the Corps. They don't weigh 22 LBS so they Have to get the Xtra support and control to make em work right. Semper Fi.
My technique has improved drastically since this video was filmed. But I find that the less physical force I exert into the rifle, the better. On rifles that I can let “free recoil” without the scope biting my forehead, I put only enough pressure on the buttpad with my shoulder to counter the weight of the trigger pull. Seems to work best for me.
Modern shooting techniques have evolved as firearm technology has improved over time. Design and ergonomics, ammunition, barrels, bipods/rests, muzzle brakes, types of material used etc., are ever changing. I’m a believer in shooting the way that gives you the best performance while not compromising on safety.
Good shooting Tex....you pulled an Erik Cortina 😅😂 by saying don't mess it up, don't mess it up and then... bang and pulled it...hahaha...good load building....keep it up!!! I shot 308 also.💯🤙👍
Use same set up Rem 700 bull barrel. 42.2 IMR 4064 was more accurate than the gmm. Started at 42 worked up to 45. 10 rounds each. BEST ACCURACY WAS 42.2 ! YOU WILL LIKE IT.
7:15 That's when i had to throw in the towel. Watching ticks crawl around on your notebook. I Just KNOW they're On you, crawling around. . . . - - - . . .
I really think you should have kept going. You certainly found some low velocity accuracy nodes, but I think you might very well find another node around 42.5 gr.
I have had good luck with 40.7 imr 4064 imi case fed 210 gm primer 175 smk 2.205 " ogive 2.815 coal. Rem 700 police rifle 26" barrel. No chrograph available. Pennsylvania summer average of 85 temperature. Shoots better than me!
Barrel heats up quick and more velocity variance hot to cold with IMR 4064 try some Alliant Reloader 15. Also try Reloader 7 with 150 Grain Sierra Match King 34.8gr 35.0grain 35.2 35.4grain CCI Standard Large Rifle Primers 2.80"OAL also same as RL 7 But 36.0 grains Hodgdon Benchmark. ( I like Hornady stuff also but my rifle shoots these niceley)
Keep it coming good info I have a savage model 12 in 308 cal allways looking for a better load to try !! I am loading Hornady 168 grain Amax bullet ,43 gr reloader 15 powder and a federal 210m primer very good results
@@TheOutdoorGeneralist thanks, I have an rem 700 aacsd 20" 1/10 twist using federal matching 175gr getting 5/16" groups @ 100 yds.love it. You might try the 175gr.
Please resist stressing the extractor by forcing it over around that you've already slid into the chamber like you did with the first round. I didn't catch the length of your Barrel but I hope it's at least 22 in. There's another guy out here trying to get good consistent groups out of a 20 inch barrel and a 308 it cannot figure out why his Krieger Barrel will not produce a stable group. Why are you getting consistent holes in a couple of those targets that are oblong with a single bullet?
I think you're doing great. I'll watch that 50 video for sure. Wouldn't mind seeing you try out the 168 ELD-M or a 175gr bullet. There really is too many options.
My precision 308 loads were based off the FGMM. After a lot of trial and error, I found my Rifles perfect load. Just last week I shot a 0.68” 5rd group @ 300yrd which is 0.22 MOA, using only a bipod and rear bag. Sierra 168gr Matchking BTHP IMR 4064 @ 42.7gr Peterson match grade brass GM210M primers COAL 2.8” 0.0015 to 0.0020 shoulder bump Give it a go. Obviously your shooting ability will play a large part in your results, plus it was tuned to my rifle, but it’s a great starting point. I’ve had many people try this load (but with different brass) consistently hitting 0.5 MOA @ 100yrds. So it seems to have the same “it just works” type of consistency and accuracy as the FGMM regardless of the rifle. Highly recommend trying. Good luck.
GMM is a GREAT factory round. Reloading for your rifle is the answer. Question is how accurate do you need to be? The Human is the weak point...Human Error. For me, and my ability.. a 6 inch group at 600 yards is as good as I can do. Point is.. 1/2 MOA accuracy is fun and all.. but most people don't need it. 20 years ago the standard we looked to achieve was measured by Blue Helmets.
kurt carver you are completely right! Working on my shooting form all the time, tweaking things here and there to get better. More of a chin weld IIRC with this setup...would love to have a riser on the stock to make things more consistent.
@@TheOutdoorGeneralist Replace the OEM stock with the MagPul Hunter stock which allows you to adjust both comb height and length of pull to your exact requirements.

measure your bullets from the ogive not the tip, 😂😂😂 noob reloaders always wonder why they have inconsistent measurements, and as a side note that meplat has nothing to do with the accuracy, they're within accuracy tolerances. 😮
Never measure center to center. Too easy to mess up and not very accurate. Measure outside to outside of the furthest holes because that is well defined then subtract bullet diameter,. in this case subtract .308"
