I love Guillermo's style. The costumes in this are so much like the ones in Pan's Labyrinth. Beautiful / creepy at the same time. I hope he decides to create his own universe / story with his style of story telling / costuming
That's because Guillermo del Toro also directed Pan's Labyrinth... Sadly, it is unknown if he will continue the franchise due to the reason many studios consider the production for Hellboy 3 to be expensive...
Now that you mention it, marathoning the Guillermo Cinematic Universe for a whole weekend sounds like an incredibly satisfying experience. Let's hope our world hasn't crushed that dream at least :)

King Balor standing up and smiling as he embraces his coming end with head held high always gets to me. Very dignified and solemn, almost as if its a relief.
I always read it as he respected his son for his conviction despite disagreeing with his position, & was glad his death was coming at the hand of someone he loved, + for a reason. That he himself wasn't going to suffer the indignity of "fading away",
This type of antagonist is the best. You can understand his motivation, he’s really not evil and you find yourself rooting for him...and if he succeeded it would have been a satisfying ending.
What matters is direction and purpose, the newest Hellboy movie had no sense of mythology they just threw things at the wall with horror elements, using cgi could have worked but there was no beauty in the monsters like Del Toro has done for these movies
@@kennethsatria6607 Yes. Couldn't have said it better. The issue is not simply what they use but also how and why. And too often, today they use familiar answers without knowing what questions they asked in the first place. The technology is not ready yet to simply overtake the whole process and there is a true beauty in seeing a set that is real in our day and age.
@@Helpsnekgettosubspls Hey now that's a good example of a proper executed CGI creature, maybe also Peter Jackson's Kong. They're CGI but were truly characters
Nuada is perhaps my favorite villain of all time. We finally get someone who has a point and I remember thinking "well, I would probably do the same if they were killing my people." I love Hellboy but Luke Goss stole every scene he was in.
'well, I would probably do the same if they were killing my people' Nuada's plan is to genocide Humanity, humanity who by and large don't even know his people exist. Don't you see the irony of 'well, I would probably do the same if they were killing my people' because that is exactly how many Humans would feel when some hidden people come out of nowhere and start murdering every man, woman and child they can get their hands on?
I like the way the elf king prepares for death, standing with a smile and a welcoming gesture. Maybe he is very old to fight and wants to die in this way, or maybe he doesn’t want to personally raise a hand against his son, knowing deep down in his heart that his son is right, but the word of the elf king cannot be broken and only the death of the elf king releases from the oath.
He was forced to fight for the life he wished for his people but it was not his life they wanted. Nuada was blinded by his hatred, and his wish for his people not to die out, refusing to see that he was expediting their extinction. By revealing his existence to humans, breaking the pact - he destroyed his family and most likely what remained of his kingdom shortly after
I miss the stories where the Prince was one of the baddest dudes out there, earned in combat, honor and royal blood...a Prince would LEAD his armies into battle and show no lack of courage and concern for his men.
@Shirou Kotomine I don't remember much of their fight, but i think he actually beat that dumbass Hellboy, albeit struggling. His sister, recognizing he won, made harakiri to stop him since they were bound together, killing both.
I legit was on Nuada's side during this whole movie. He just wants his people to remain in existence and not to be snuffed out like a distant memory. The fact that his father became so damn complacent with the idea of dying out slowly over time one could understand his rage. To watch the society you once defended with your life basically giving up on itself for almost no reason. Even with all of that you can tell he doesn't want to kill his father, but essentially given no choice.
Interesting thing about Nuada is that, other than two or three lines, all of his dialogue is in English. He's also shown to be something of a mechanic. During his time in exile, he's become far more like the modern humans that he seeks to destroy than he would ever care to admit.
It's because he's too cool and would outshine everyone else. Same thing with the guy that played Rico in Starship Troopers. Most chiseled jaw in the history of movies.
To get A movies, you have to proviude, uh, "services" to the director, producer etc in general. Hollyweird is corrupt to its bones, and its been that way since the '30 and only going worse with age.
How long did you expect them to go on talking jbberish? I think all sane people understood he is meant to be talking in his language. People like you who try to be funny and just sound stupid are so irritating.
@@martineshamzin7535 jibberish? Don't be racist, lol. Don't be so triggered by the prospect of more subtitles. Probably he's speaking english for emphasis, or his father is refusing to speak english for emphasis, or both.
its supposed to show that he DID try and make an effort. That while he is determined, he wasnt too proud to try and make the truce work. he lived underground. in sewers like vermin. its been centuries maybe even millenia and he never struck before. He understands the concept behind parking lots and shopping malls he obviously knows the infrastructure of humans infinitely more than humans bothered to remember the elves. Im not surprised that he spoke english. hes not evil, he doesnt even hate humans he jsut sees them as weak and prioritizing their survival is pointless when weighted against immortals.
The antagonist himself was such a good character, he was just a warrior trying to secure the future of his people so that they may not be forgotten in the sand. However even hellboy felt bad for him knowing your the only outsider amongst billions and yet he fights for them knowing they’ll hate him for it, this movie was fantastic if only Guillermo del toro had done the third one it would been something.
@@Riorozentrue but even tho hellboy wanted recognition the fame would’ve made him selfish and made his relationship with lizz and abe complicated I’m glad the movie went into the direction it took.
nah, most likely hellboy felt but for him, because he knew the prince had less than zero chances, in a war with humanity. he was full of himself and very uninformed because he spent millenia in exile, and yet he still hasn't learn anything about humans. the truce was not the only reason why the rest of the creatures went to live underground. nice story, but there was no option when they come on top in a war.
Nuada claims to be the most loyal to his heritage, but he is the only one speaking English in this scene from the start. His sister only switches to respond to him. I like that detail. He’s acting more human when he seeks war, even though it’s humans he hates
It also has to do with him being exiled for such a long time not needing to speak his language to others because its a dying language with his people. One of my favorite movie villains ever introduced.
The puppets look so freaking real. It's amazing. Everyone always talks about computer generated images. Yet the coolest sfx scenes are always those with tons of latex and foam.
Guillermo del Toro wanted to continue the saga, and he already had the script for a third installment of the movies. But all the studios Guillermo spoke to felt his project was too expensive, and rejected Guillermo's offer. With time, the studios opted for a cheaper reboot. Which sucks since Guillermo's Hellboy movie-verse was great, it was mystically beautiful due to his great use of practical effects and stages on it, and it actually had a story that felt fluent and followed the mythology well since he actually knew, and did what actually matters to have a great film: great direction and purpose. Unlike the new Hellboy reboot which simply threw things to the wall with horror elements here and there, had no sense of mythology, and got filled with action, and a senseless story that satisfied the masses with an IQ lower than a flea. Using CGI could have worked out, but there was no beauty, no mystical mythological feel, and no fluent story that Guillermo del Toro had done on his films.
I always loved the sound of their language, even though we only got a bit of it. And I love the way the princess has no hesitation in answering that she is at peace with her brother's (and her) death. Just something about all of it very stately and courtly, Greco-mythic, an Old World romance, drama and tragedy.

Luke Goss and Guillermo Del Toro are pure gold together. Goss was great in Blade II and he is absolutely fantastic here. They need to make another sequel to a well-received superhero adaptation and make that material sing. My vote is for a Del Toro directed Dredd II.

I'm not sure if the King so much agreed with Nuada as opposed to knowing that he was right, but he still could not bring himself to condone what Nuada wanted to do. At the end, the King could see that his guards could not defeat Nuada, and that his own death was inevitable. As alluded to in their earlier conversation, he knew that his time, and the time of the elves, was over, and he went to his end with dignity, perhaps trying to leave a final example for Nuada. This is actually a story that's played out countless times before in Earth's history. Untold hundreds, maybe thousands, of species have lived and died and gone extinct when conditions were no longer right for them, or when they got outcompeted by another rival. The philosophy of the elves was that since their end was inevitable, there was no point in shedding blood trying to postpone their extinction. The King would rather die remaining true to the beliefs and ideals of his people, than for them to become like the humans, even if doing so hastened their end. It makes you wonder how we would behave, millions of years in the future, when the Earth is changed enough that it's no longer an ideal home for us. Would we want to remain as we are, or would we try to change ourselves, through methods like cybernetic augmentation or genetic mutation, to the point where we might not even look human anymore, to be able to continue to thrive in a new world?
It was plagiarized from "Ella Enchanted", to boot! I only noticed this because of my wife wanting me to watch it with her, but the details are lined up perfectly!

You know what's interesting about Hellboy's villains? The ones from the original movies that is, they're portrayed as "human" villains. Rasputin and Nuada were not like evil incarnate villains. They were capable of love and they were turned to villainy because of the pain and injustice they suffered. And even after choosing to be evil, they still loved someone (For Rasputin it was Ilsa, for Nuada it was his father and sister) They're villains who you can understand. You don't condone their actions and you know what they're doing is wrong so you root against them but you understand their reasoning for what they did so you sympathize with them. That's very interesting and poetic and it's how a lot of bad people are. I mean yeah there are those who are evil incarnate but then there are those who were lead down the wrong path because of hurt and injustice, and you feel so sad for those people when they fail to get back to the light.

Nuada was a proud prince who just wanted to live freely like the humans. He wanted his people to be free.

I think what I love about Nuada's presentation in this scene most is how much he absolutely disrespects the room. Kid just millyrocks into the room after being exiled and doesn't even speak in the language of his people. It shows, purposely or not, how blind he's become to this goal he has, understandable as his motivations are!
King Balor and Nuala knew that, by ordering Nuada to be executed, both Nuada and Nuala would die. It wasn't shown until the fight was almost over when both of their nose bled. I know its obvious but I can't believe that I missed that hint early in the movie.

Basically old Folklore elves then, depends on which regions and countries tales some where the Elves were described as spirits of nature, small invisible hidden folks, mischievous trickster little jerk, tall monstrous malevolent that kidnapped babies and pregnant women or just sociopathic bullies that lure unsuspecting men or children. Nuada is perhaps my favorite villain of all time. We finally get someone who has a point and I remember thinking "well, I would probably do the same if they were killing my people." I love Hellboy but Luke Goss stole every scene he was in.
Everyone will agree with him until it's their turn to die.
Nuada is one of our hero's from mythology, Balor was known as the evil eye..
Couldn't agree more, as much as I loved the first film I thought this one was much better and he was a big part of why.
'well, I would probably do the same if they were killing my people'
Nuada's plan is to genocide Humanity, humanity who by and large don't even know his people exist. Don't you see the irony of 'well, I would probably do the same if they were killing my people' because that is exactly how many Humans would feel when some hidden people come out of nowhere and start murdering every man, woman and child they can get their hands on?
Nuada has a point about "greed has burned hole in mans heart"
I like what Del Toro did with elves, Prince Nuada is EXACTLY how an elf fights, elegant, dextrous, fast and effective, like a scalpel.
This scene is beautiful. He wasn’t just fighting for his life. But for his sister’s.
He was forced to fight for the life he wished for his people but it was not his life they wanted. Nuada was blinded by his hatred, and his wish for his people not to die out, refusing to see that he was expediting their extinction. By revealing his existence to humans, breaking the pact - he destroyed his family and most likely what remained of his kingdom shortly after
This scene is my favorite simply because of the choreography of the fight. Shows Nuada as a force to be reckoned with.
Indeed, Luke had an excellent stuntman!

That while he is determined, he wasnt too proud to try and make the truce work. he lived underground. in sewers like vermin. its been centuries maybe even millenia and he never struck before. 💯 the fact this man got to play Nuada & Jared Nomak 🔥🔥
The antagonist himself was such a good character, he was just a warrior trying to secure the future of his people so that they may not be forgotten in the sand. Why the hell did they reboot this saga? They could have continued the series

It’s funny how he says "Shopping Malls!"Like they are absolute proof that humans are evil.
He had just listened to that song that said they *"paved paradise and put up a parking lot."*
it was more a '' they destroyed the world... for that ''
Он имел ввиду что люди вырубили леса чтобы построить эти центры
The Shoppings Malls are absolute proof that humans are evil. If you knew how shopping malls operate, the philosophy behind them, and how the goods and services they provide are produced and where they come from, you would see it.
But then again, you wouldn't wave the flag of the shopping mall empire then, would you?
It was about greed
Nuada has to be one of the most sympathetic villains I've ever seen. I always feel like crying when he fussed the police dogs....his people had no quarrel with animals. Just humans. And sadly...we have earned that kind of contempt.
this was like 10x more epic than most movies past 2012....... when he said "we will NOT fade...." i beleived astounding acting and astounding set. shoulda won awards i dunno if it did but it should have. beautiful set btw.
"What is this? What are you doing, my son?" "Succeeding you...father."
This kingdom shall fall
I literally saw this movie several times in theaters just because I fell head-over-heels in love with Prince Nuada.
I can totally agree, everything about him is on point
This movie has a beautiful touch of fantasy and fairy tales... Made me watch it several times ❤️🧝🤴👸🧚
I am still in love with him. Lol. 😅
I have Hellboy 1 and 2 on DVD.
I fell in love with both Abe and Nuada. Makes me just wanna be Nuala so I can have them both lol
Rasputin and Kroenen have always been evil, they're litteraly nazis and eldritch cultists who want to bring their lovcraftian deity to earth
They are very good bad guys but not tragic ones
What's wrong about what Nuada says here? How on Earth is he a villain?
@@enekaitzteixeira7010 Well he does want to wipeout the human race.
@@enekaitzteixeira7010kinda late, but he wanted to raise immortal army to wipe out humans, literally.
Like I get his point, but his ways is just wrong.
This whole movie was great, I wish they got a third movie. Also Nuada is an all time favorite villain of mine, He was so cool and well acted and written. His warrior code, and the way he still says "sir" in the auction scene as he speaks even among what he considers insults. He accepts a warriors challenge to fight Hellboy. Even if kind of forced. Plus them sharing pain with a "good" and "bad" duality is really fun.
I always liked the dad's smile at 3:37. Like, he knew he was 90% going to die, but he was gonna send his guys at him anyway and at least die standing up. And maybe he was feeling even a crazy last bit of parental pride that his son had become such a powerful warrior, even if he was killing him with it.
This movie made me realize how perfect Luke Goss would be as Drizzt Do'Urden.
for gods sakes someone give this guy a lightsaber!!
Shit yea! He’s make a damn good Jedi or sith
@@vexjaeger4314 Sith Please....
This deserves more likes
@@vexjaeger4314 sith or member of enternal empire, he clearly based his goal on revenge and rage
I am tempted to edit a lightsaber on him now 🤣🤣🤣
I feel sorry him, he was just looking out for his people.
He was needlessly drawing attention to his people and pulling them into a war that would have many deaths on both sides. He is even responsible for putting a number of endangered creatures in danger to achieve what he wants. Had he not done what he did, many lives would not have been lost.
@@trebot9292266 wars always have death on all sides.
@@zeokingsilver that was my point buddy. as in he's putting his own people at risk and hurting his own people.
@@trebot9292266 he was trying to wage war and wars can not be done without sacrifice and most likely was like if your not with me you are against me and with the humans and believed was no other choice
In our world he would be called nazi or worse for speaking up on behalf of his people good
Luke Goss should get more roles nowadays. He always deliver memorable performances whenever he gets the chance!
He’s so underrated
3:29 always love the way he spin those swords
He reminds me to Prince Zuko.
Old is gold ! Still can't believe 13 years have passed 🙌
I really sided with Nuada and his arguments. Why were they forced to live in the shadows while humans kept destroying everything, especially in that part where Hellboy kills that huge tree creature and saves the baby and everyone turns on him calling him a monster.
Nuada was a proud prince who just wanted to live freely like the humans. He wanted his people to be free.
Nuada has made a point" greed has burned a hole in mans heart" and he's 100% right.
I appreciate how Nuada asked his sister if she was at peace with their fathers choice, as if asking if she was ok with dying. I belive if she said she wasn't he would've chosen to back down so she could live. He loved his sister more than anything. But his mission was too important. Small details like that make good films
Few sequels are as good as the original. This was well done. A good villain is someone the audience can identify with. A interesting story and original. A fine comic book movie. Great action sequences. Beginning to End.
Yes...he says shopping malls. But then again......the Trolls market was....basically a shopping mall. He’s an E-bay kinda guy.
Luke Goss was incredible in this movie
Miss this kind of movies back in the day. Always excited when watching these
Still one of my all time favorite baddies and one of the most sympathetic in my opinion
Wink the type of homie who's literally got your back no matter what
And died for him...
King Balor and Nuala knew that, by ordering Nuada to be executed, both Nuada and Nuala would die. It wasn't shown until the fight was almost over when both of their nose bled. I know its obvious but I can't believe that I missed that hint early in the movie.
the princess did say if her or her brother got hurt the other would feel the pain since both are twins.
Why are some people only getting on here just to say that they don't like the scene. It just doesn't make sense to me.
Those people are stupid and only love big CGI explosions. Hellboy 2 is one of my favourite comic book movies, had amazing fight scenes, story and characters. A shame 3 was not made.
When watching this the first time, I was hoping that Nuada would survive and become an ally of Hellboy & co. He was the perfect foil for Hellboy's childish and rather Americana persona. They would make a great team along with Abe and his girl. Oh well... what dreams may come...
He’s not a villain
This man is an unsung hero ❤
this
I love this character. Was a great movie. Interesting and different.
