  • Hey guys, I'm at the tail end of a terribly annoying illness this week, but luckily I finally had the energy to film a bit. This video has a cozy, autumnal feel to it, and I couldn't be happier about that. It's spooky season, y'all!!! :P

I’m not a camper and I don’t live the van life but I find van life so refreshing. I’m fascinated by the life you chose to be free to go and explore so many beautiful places and alone with a dog. I love Eliza, she’s a sweetheart. Your badass I must say and fearless. I admire solo van lifers, your amazing. I hope you feel better soon 🙏

On my way to work, where I take care of an elderly woman who had a stroke, I always see a man walking . And In his hand, always, is a book. He reads while he walks.

The knock, and eventually even the worry about the knock, never lets you totally relax out there. If you head back to Northern California I can recommend Russian House near Jenner, who helped me out a lot, they do a system of “pay what you feel is right” which can include helping in the kitchen etc, and they have property enough to park a few nights or longer if you build a relationship with them. Guerneville is also a Bohemian town that tolerates some RV dwellers. Russian House is closing in December I think unfortunately. The other thing I’d explore is the burned areas in NorCal; many of those were second/vacation homes and won’t rebuild quickly and so it might be welcome to park in those areas.

I know the feeling of searching for a new book and holding it can't be replaced but if you do want to hold on to all of your books you could get an e-reader. Aside from the initial cost books are way cheaper and even more so with an subscription. You can store from 2000-4000 books on it and a single charge can last weeks. I got one myself and only kept my most important books and having the best of both worlds. Nice video!

Maybe I was curious because I am a "Grandmother", altho one of a grandparent's greatest desires is to offer comfort. As I listened to you talking about your love of books and art... I couldn't help but feel a connection as I am reminded of one of my daughters, Arlene who is always surrounded by books from floor to ceiling :)) ... and my granddaughter, Annika who like her aunt reads a lot but also loves Art. This was the first video of yours I've watched. I was delighted to hear you're a book lover and reader. I've been an enthusiastic reader as long as I can remember and have thousands of books. I'm in my seventies now and still read hours daily, usually reading a couple of books a week as I have done my whole life. Although I used to buy new books, now I mainly buy second hand books and use the library extensively. I have more books than I have room for and I have been selling books (mainly antiquarian ones) online since the late 90s but still I keep buying when I see something of interest. I love all genres except science fiction and fantasy and horror. Books have not only taught me factual information but also helped me understand people and human nature as well as providing me great escape into imaginary worlds. My other love has been traveling which I've also done my whole life. I also lived the van life in a homemade house built on a pickup chassis back in the 1970s. I spent ten years traveling around the world in the 60s (hitch-hiking solo in Europe) 70s (hitch-hiking by boat) and 80s (mainly in Asia) and never had a hotel reservation and spent few nights in hotels in general. Though I prefer to travel alone, for me the best part of traveling was finding my tribe, fellows on the same path, a unique group of people living freely, enjoying adventure, living by our wits, conserving our money, fearless but always alert and aware. Only other travelers can appreciate all that the lifestyle provides. Having a home as you travel is by far the easiest and most enjoyable and economical way to travel but it also isolates you from others to some extent. Still, it's been my favorite way as it allows you to have the comforts and security of home while still having adventures.

LOVE how you filmed the book bit. I like to do that with food filming in the van! We have the same wildflower book but I gotta check the plant messiah!

OMG Maddie, when you mentioned new faces I looked at your subscriber count and was so excited for you! I'm happy so many new people get to enjoy your lovely soothing videos. Also, those tacos look amazing. All the food you make looks so good.
I have over 100 board games in my RV right now (which is about the same size as your van) so I feel you on the organization bit.

Sorry you were so sick and I can sure understand it is the pits to be sick in your van and having to move everyday. Glad you're better. It is obvious by your book collection and your major in college that you are one smart young lady. I'm not as well read as you but I am a book guy with a collection of some old classics and poetry as well as other genres. I think it would be most interesting to sit and talk with you face to face about a myriad of topics. Thanks for the video.

Maddie, I really hope you have "backups" of your field journals with your artwork, etc. Even if you take the time to snap a pic of two pages at a time with your phone, if anything were to happen... at least you'd have THAT. I'll have a high-quality scanner with me, so that would be the best option (if we ever bump into each other). OK??? THANKS for the work you're putting into the channel. It sucks sometimes, but we're all really enjoying it! Eliza cracks me up, and you're doing a GREAT job. - Jim (The Mad Camper) Oh BTW, I finished the DSM-5, so I'm starting "Gift from the Sea" - Anne Morrow Lindbergh.

Happy you are better, you have a very authentic manner and your dog is pretty and sweet, love that books are a life you enjoy, joy comes with growth spiritually and emotionally, and hardship gives us wings to overcome.

Glad you're feeling better and good that you took some time to relax organizing your books! My favorite thing to do for many years was spending a long afternoon or evening at a good bookstore and exploring. Unfortunately it's becoming more difficult as these places begin to disappear. There's nothing like a real book to cozy up with. Sorry, but electronic reading devices and computers just aren't the same thing!

I discovered your video while looking at ways to renovate my caravan...
Great organisation love it, and what a beautiful dog!
Glad you enjoy reading especially books on nature, books that are true, and essential for health and healing...
I hope you add this to your collection
'The Ministry of Healing' by EG White, written over 120 years ago is timeless and inspired...
May God bless you both and keep you safe

    Hi Maddy, feeling better??
I am in a tired mode, and think it is because days getting shorter, and i go more within...
    I just let go...
Still building at my tiny house inside as I spend the time outside building whatever had to be done...
Now inside, shaping my little house as a snugg.
    With my woodstove...
Just changing of the season... love your videos😘🥰
