    I guess the bigger logs add stability to the base of the building. It's so organized, and even spare logs just in case.
    I heard a story about my inlaws family that years ago they started a cabin but didn't finish it. And they were young and half a dozen of them working on it. I miss my departed husband and all his stories from the past.

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  4 года назад +1

      karen4you Howdy Karen- it was easier to handle the bigger logs down lower and progressively the next smaller logs were used as the cabin went up. This was the case in our area. However, when I restored the Chism House there was a top plate that was 8x12 and 34’ long. That was quite a timber to get up on the second floor. I’m sorry about your loss. It’s not pleasant losing a loved one. God bless you

      James Aldridge Howdy Jim- good to hear from you. You can put up full length logs and cut out later if you want to, but I like to cut the actual lengths I need as I go. I feel that I can keep waste down to a minimum that way. It keeps me from having a bunch of short pieces left over. Hope all goes well for y’all in Crossville. Let me know how it goes for ya. • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  4 года назад

      old school with a modern twist Howdy James- it may seem a bit confusing, and to be quite honest I was a little concerned how I explained it. But, as it progresses I hope to make it very clear. Hey, I found your address so I’ll get some measurements on that axe to you. God bless y’all

  • @livefree-ordietrying
    @livefree-ordietrying 2 года назад +1

    Hi Paul. I'm learning a lot here, but I have to ask about the measuring. Do you measure the flat side only, or do you include the rounded top and bottom as well. I've been doing like you - sawing the logs, racked them, numbered them and now it's time for the charting. Hope you can clarify this for me. Blessings from the Swedish woods - Michael.

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  2 года назад +2

      Howdy Michael- I always measure the complete width of the log which includes the round part. Even though for the most part it isn’t seen after the chinking goes in it still will be part of the height of the logs. If you ever have any questions please feel free to email me thebeardedcarpenter8@gmail.com and I will be happy to help you. Hope you have a wonderful and productive week. God’s blessings to you

      @@TheBeardedCarpenter Thank you for a quick response to my question Paul. I was 90% sure that you took the measure of the hole log, but just to be absolutely sure, I had to ask. If I start calculating the notches from a wrong measurement, it would go wrong. Thanks for sharing and thanks for the opportunity to mail you if I'm in need for some specific answers to a problem during my cabin build.

    Great information! I have oak, pine and poplar what wood is the best for a cabin?

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  4 года назад

      Happy Critters Howdy- I have never had the opportunity to use poplar, but I knew it’s been used a lot for cabins. In our area we have pine and oak. Pine is easier to work with and is way more prevalent. If you have good, straight trees with slow taper you could use any of what you mentioned. God bless y’all

      Gerald Roth Howdy- If all the logs were cut on four sides all the same you would have only 1 notch size , so you’re correct.
