In regards to the over tightened screws. I found that holding both the bonnet and the buffer beam, between my thumb and forefinger while pressing down, gave just enough clearance in order to remove the screws. Also take care when removing the body work, as the front and rear hand rails may be for (some reason) glued in place!

As a complete newbie to model railways I was wondering what is the best way to plan my layout, is there a software design program that I should use, how will I know what track pieces I need to order, how do I build a baseboard and if I want to have two levels on my layout is there a way of learning how to do that. I have a million and one questions but if you could offer any help to get me started then I would be very grateful. Thanks
If your starting out from complete scratch it can be quite difficult to know what to do and what to get. I would suggest doing the following.... Decide if you want to run your layout using dc or dcc control Buy a dc or dcc train set and see how you get on with it Also it's very important to keep things simple for your first layout. I made the mistake on my first layout of overcomplicating things which resulted in a layout that didn't work very well at all. Your number 1 objective at all times should be ensuring your trains run well. There are various forums you can join such as rmweb or newrailwaymodellers. They have are loads of guides, advice and help on starting a layout.
Nice little shunter that is and I like the work on the repaint as well mate. Before watching this review, I was under the impression that it would use a 6 pin N gauge decoder due to its compact size :). Ash.
It is a beauty in that color. There are decoders now with built-in capacitors that prevent stalling when dirty track or unpowered frogs are encountered. It sounds as if this loco would greatly benefit from such if you run into trouble.

I've always loved diesel shunters as I used to watch class 03 Drewery shunters shunting and running on a branch line as a kid back in the 1970's. My own layout has just as many Diesel shunters as other locomotives and is still running on the pioneering ancestor of DCC, Hornby's Zero One. Plenty of diesel shunters that need to be done for ready to run such as the English Electric LMS / BR Jackshaft station pilot / heavy freight shunter (most of which ended up on the Continent serving with the Army and later replacing the shortage of locos in Europe after the war), English Electric LMS / BR inside frame shunter (Ironically this was the loco Triang introduced in the 1950's and remained well into the 1990's repainted and past off as a Class 08, which it wasn't). Class 15, Class 17 (Clayton) and Class 18 diesel freight locos. North British 0-4-0 (British Railways in Scotland) which was done by Jouef / Playcraft in 4mm. (I have two, one with correct underframe and wheels) but a more modern replacement would be nicer. Both needed a lot of additional lead to improve traction / pickup. Ultimately the master / slave Class 13 made up of permanently coupled Class 12 0-6-0 shunters used in the hump shunting yards on British Railways.
Andy Reid Good to hear a Zero One is still out there being used. I personally have never seen one. The class 15, 16 and 17 are available from Heljan in 00 scale.
I still want a Jackshaft though and the only RTR ones I've seen were PIKO in TT3 scale. Their life span on UK railways was 1938 to early 1950's and didn't even last until BR's green livery phase, being all black with or without LMS still showing. All sold off into eastern Europe, hence the only RTR being of DDR origin originally in TT3 scale. The old Triang 0-6-0 English Electric inside framed 0-6-0 shunter has a close to similar body except that the Jackshaft had more battery boxes on the left side (all down most of the left side. I did start to scratch building one and only managed as far converting a Triang EE body to match the Drawings. However the chassis and jackshaft movement proved too complex for me to figure how to do. I've scratch built chassis in metal and plastic before but if you ever see an Ian Beattie drawing / diagram of the beast you'll understand the problems with that complex conrod arrangement. As a RTR model it would be an impressive sight to watch in action.

Nicely shot too and makes a change to listen to commentary that holds my attention. I own the Esso version and would like to purchase a second Sentinel and re-spray it into green and change the identity to "Les Forster" based at Rushden. Please can you tell me what you used to mask off the maker's plate and any other detail. I'm assuming the glass is easy to remove too. Talking of which, I wonder if Laser Glaze will produce a replacement glazing for this model. Paul
Thanks for the comment paul. I used tamiya masking tape when respraying this model. The glass is removable, but is glued in tightly so you will need to take care when pushing it out. Since this review I have added additional weight in the form of liquid gravity from deluxe materials. This has improved the running of the model.

I'm going to set up a model railway soon, is it best to have cork strips under the track and ballast over it or is it better to just lay down track then shove ballast on top
BSC ( S&L ) Corby had quite a number of these Sentinels working the large iron ore quarry system and steelworks at Corby from the 1960`s up until the closure in 1980, the majority of the shunters were Steelmans.
Nice looking model, the Durham Locomotive preservation group own the Tarmac sentinel that is at Shildon NRM this is the one that hornby used to make these models, the real one at shildon is currently white but will be put back into its green livery, i have ordered the green tarmac model from DLPG and Hornby havent even sent them out to them yet so am still waiting for mine :(

Are you track sides just weathered with sleeper grime mate? I have watched your weathering video previously and that's what you said you used. The branch line where that sentinel was seen running looks really well weathered, if you could tell me what colours you used I would appreciate it! Looks grey with some brown?!
Hi Dave Yes, most of the weathering is done with sleeper grime. However I do go over it with grey or black to give deeper more used look. This is true for points and areas of the branchline. Also applying several coats works very well.

Huh. Painted BR blue and white then weathered, this would look like a great thing for hauling my B800 track cleaner. Especially with it's shape. Pity about the problems it has with dirty track, then.

I thought it was 6 pin, but was proved wrong when I opened it. Easy enough to hard wire a decoder to it though.

I got mine from hattons, but it went out of stock very quickly. I believe hornby have more on the way.

I think those are called stay alive decoders. The ones i've seen look to be too big to fit inside the model.

Those barriers are made using the hornby flexible lineside fencing cut down and painted yellow.

It will struggle on insulfrog points. I hope to improve the running with some added weight.
Was all ur pointwork electro in the vid again? Added weight wil definately help! I can envisage a nice lil driver or two inside as wel :)

Great little model from hornby, I have the NcB one, work well at the moment, just building a small yard for it to work in

Looking at it, I's suggest that the fake grill end houses the fuel tank, given there's a moulded filler cap above the headlights.

I took it apart and sprayed it, took about a day or so to get done. Watch out for those screws, the ones on mine were in very tight.

If you were going to repaint it there is a sentinel livery for network south east the real thing is at Rushden historical transport museum
hi , ive notice your rail gaps are quite big , also some of your joints are overly sharp is there a reason for this ,. nice lay out tho ..
