Thank you so much. To the point and clear where everyone else is trying and failing to be a showman. I’ve been struggling to find a vid like this. Great job!
i was struggling with this all day and watched quite a few videos. finally i watched yours and it worked. thanks for mentioning doubling the preset number and adding 1 or 2 for a or b.
Thanks so much for this video!!! You've made my life so much easier!!! It works the same with the Big Sky except you have to triple instead of double. You're a legend for sharing this!!!!!
I was doing crazy shit before keeping all my banks close together and under 128. It was literally melting my brain. It’s taken 3 mins now where before about 15!!! So happy!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
To scroll faster through the numbers, hold the opposite + or - while holding the +or - you are using. Basically hold both down but hold the direction you want to go first.
One way is to press the memory/manual footswitch the lights will all turn red. This is where you can manually select loops to be added in to the patch. Hit the write button twice if you want to save those loops with that patch. Otherwise when you go back into Memory mode it will go back to the patch you originally had saved. Hope that helps you.
Josh Collopy That would be pretty cool to have a play around with. Still learning what the ES-8 can do so will see what I can do and hopefully a video or two comes out of it. Thanks for watching!
Have you noticed that there is a slight "delay lag" when switching between presets? But when switching pedals on and off in manual mode, it is smooth and direct.
andenahlino Hey there is a patch change time setting that's set by default to 5 instead of 0. by pressing edit -> play option -> patch chg time. Hopefully this solves your issues.
How do you switch more than one midi pedal at the same time? I have the mobius, timeline, and bigsky.. I can only get the mobius to work.. Also do i need to run a return midi cable from the bigsky back to the Es-8?
+Paully Waully First you will need to make sure you have each pedal you wish to control on a separate midi channel. Then i would use patch midi 1 for the pedal in channel 1 - and so on for how many midi pedals you have. Also need to make sure you have midi through turned on for each of the Strymon pedals - This sounds like it may solve your issue. No need to have midi back to ES-8.
@@EarthsideSacrifice What about Midi channel 0? What's that about? Ditto channel 127? Are they channels or PC/CC values? I can't figure out which is which with these damn things. And how do I know what channel a pedal should be on? Believe me, I've tried for over a year and I'm *this* close to selling it all and quitting MIDI.
Thank you for the video. I have a question for you. I hope you can help me. I have my Mobius and my Timeline in loop 7 of my ES-8. How can I make a patch in which I choose only one of the two to be active. For example, I want the chorus from the Mobius but no delay from the Timeline. On another patch I want some delay from the Timeline but want the Mobius to be inactive. Does that make sense? I am hoping to save a loop by having those two Strymons in series. I already set my midi cables and learned how to send commands to the Strymons to pick a preset but I havent been able to figure out how I can make one inactive when they are in the same loop.
Hey, thank you for watching. Makes perfect sense what you are trying to achieve. Strymon has put all the midi cc# in the user manual for each pedal. So you should be able to send a midi command to be able to bypass the pedals. For the Mobius Bypass is midi cc# 102. Value Range: Bypass= 0 Engage= 127. Hopefully this helps you!
Thank you for your help. I tried it and it worked. Well, the switching worked. I can now bypass one pedal or the other. However, when I swicth between patches Im getting this growing feedback loop (like the one at the end of Karma Police). Do you have an idea why that might be happenning? I will try to solve that tomorrow. I might put the Timeline in a different loop. I just bought a Boss sy-300. I might try to put that one in the same loop as the Mobius.
ES- 8 Bank has eight presets numbered 1 to 8. How to control the preset on bank 0 on the Strymon Mobius? Double zero is still zero, plus 1 for A is 1, plus 2 for B.... That covers 2 modulations, the Mobius has 12.
Jack Glacken Hey, not 100% sure what you mean. But on the Mobius there is 200 presets that you can set up to use any of the 12 modulations. You are correct on how to control the presets on bank zero. Then 3 and 4 would be A and B on bank 1 and so on. Not sure if that’s what you were after but hope it helps.
Nice video! Im planning to get an ES-5, but I would like to know how many Midi commands (PCs and CCs) can it send simultaneously per patch? I use one Joyo PXL LIVE but it sends only 2 MIDI commands (PC and CC) simultaneously.
Thank you. Sorry for taking awhile to reply. I'm not 100% sure on the ES-5. But on the ES-8 you can send up to 8 midi commands on each patch. So at a guess I would say you would be able to send 5 midi commands on each patch with the ES-5. Thank you for watching!
Very nice tutorial, thank you. What happens if you have connected (3) Strymon pedals (i.e. Mobius, Timeline and Big Sky) together and you want to store to a Boss ES-8 preset a combined sound from all pedals? For example, how you select a phaser from the Mobius, a delay from the Timeline and a reverb from the Big Sky, and store all selections on preset (1) of the ES-8, so that you can have all three effects at the same time, by just pressing a single preset button? If I just edit the preset and add (2) more patches (out of the 8 available), does this get the job done?
Thank you. Yes, you can send out eight midi commands at one time with the ES-8. Just use 'patch midi 1' for the first pedal. 'patch midi 2' for the second pedal. and so on. Make sure each of your pedals are on a different midi channel. Hope that helps.
Thank you for your reply. Your video is very explanatory. Perhaps you would consider to make a detailed presentation on ES-8. Many people will appreciate it! In addition, these 8 midi commands we are talking about, are they considered separately for every preset, or do they count for the whole board? Also, did you manage to set a midi patch of your choice, together with other looped pedals on the same preset?
Thank you. That's a good idea. I've only just scratched the surface of what the ES-8 can do. Not sure if I know enough to make a video like that. Yep separate for every preset. Yeah man, if you have your midi pedal in the ES-8 loops then you can have all three of the Strymon pedals on a preset. I have mine setup with the mobius in loop 6. The timeline in loop 7 with stereo return. The Bigsky in loop 8 in stereo. Then I use the midi to change the patches on each of the pedals. So every time I press preset number 1 on the ES-8 it engages my micro pog in loop 2 plus all three of the strymon pedals and the midi switches them all to the patches that I have put into the patch midi command. Then when I press number 2 on the ES-8 I have the same pedals on just with different patches on each of them.
Thank you! This is exactly what I needed to know. It seems that the ES-8 is a fantastic piece of equipment. I appreciate very much that you took time to reply. Keep up the good work!
I have learned that one can control the ES-8 for example with Ableton Live. How can I configure the MIDI channel of the ES-8? Is it possible to set the MIDI channel of the ES-8?
Hello, one question, Is it possible to say I want in first bank of the ES-8 the Mobius to be active in 01A and in the second bank of the ES-8 the 01B to be turned on without the mobius stay in a loop? All via MIDI... or I have to turn on and off the pedal “manually” and with the ES-8 just change banks? I would like to know if is it possible to do both things via midi in the same patch in the ES-8 without touching the Mobius... THANK YOU!
I would like to give a huge thank you to +brian patrick for recommending this pedal to me. It has M]made a massive difference in being able to control my pedalboard without tap dancing all over the place.
Damn, that was fast. I didnt think youd get one so soon. And you are more than welcome. And, and... thank you for showing this. I didnt get far up in my Mobius bank programming to know I had to do that. Haha saved me alot of f bombs. :) Cool. Glad you are digging the ES8, Id feel bad if you spent all that money and didnt like it. Looking forward to how you set it up. :)
+brian patrick yeah me either haha. Been looking at getting a switching system for awhile then did a ton of research of the es8 after you talked about it and does everything I want it to do. Plus the music store here just happened to have one in stock, which almost never happens when I go to buy anything. One of about 8 in the country. It really is a great piece of gear just so many options with it. Have barely scratched the surface with it. Gald the video helps. Took me awhile to figured out how to get the midi working right. Thank you.

Or running delay and reverb in parallel is cool too. No shortage of cool things to do w it. Anyway, ck out the user group, its a huge help. And Im glad you found one so soon. Peace.
David Yokoyama Thanks for watching! You would use the midi cc# to do that. The manual for each pedal should have the cc# and the value that needs to be set to turn it on or off.
Gabriel De La O Hey, I'm not 100% sure as I have never used a loop expander. But I think you can control that through midi cc commands. The ES-8 group on Facebook should have the answer or someone might be able to answer that on there for you. Thank you for watching.
Thank you for the video! is there a Midi cable you would suggest I buy? and if i am running two midi pedals (strymon/timeline) will i only need two midi cables? thank you
Jordan James Thank you for watching! All midi cables should work the same. I'm just using cheap ones and haven't had any issues so far. You will need three. One from your midi controller (the es-8 if that's what your using) to the first pedal. Then another from that to the second pedal in the midi channel. Make sure each pedal is on its own midi channel. And the first pedal has midi thru set to on and you should be good to go.
I noticed you have the strymon patched into the loop. I’m assuming this isn’t a requirement when using midi? Also, what are the benefits of having it in the loop? I’m picking up the ES-5 soon and want to make sure I don’t need it in the loop for certain functions.
Not a requirement, just means everything in the ES-8 loops will be either before or after your midi pedals. One of the main benefits of having it in a loop to me is the ability to move the pedal around in the signal chain instantly.

+David King Not to sure what you mean by 'the es-8 jumps to switch 5 then switch 1 button stops working' Is this happening on the pedal thats being controlled by midi or on the boss ES-8 itself?
