K, your buddy had the Heckler and he was towing you up at the end what were you riding? Kinda got confused you commenting on his bike or yours? At the end you said your bike was sick but you said you were blasting through the travel and did your battery die? I’m just trying to figure out from the title what your definition of “best e-bike” is?
IMO I do not give a hoot about light weight cuz it’s an e-bike (and maybe because I have a DH bike so weight doesn’t bother me and I’m 210 lb) and I don’t care whether you can see the motor. The “best” e-bike is one that has the biggest (most power) motor and the biggest battery with the requisite suspension (minimum Fox 38 equivalent) the drive train is irrelevant as long as it works cuz the motor is doing the work. I was at Kanuga last year and rented the Specilized Levo XL and the battery died! Terrible. This past summer I bought the Canyon Torque ON mullet with 180 travel front and rear, 900 Whr battery (upgraded from the standard 720) and I’ve ridden everything with it from DH laps, bike park, big XC days (30+ miles) and the battery NEVER DIED. I’ll look up the specs on the Heckler.

Thanks for the comment! So, the Heckler SL is not mine. It’s my buddies who was letting me ride it to give a brief review with the stock parts before we built it up. I ride a Yeti SB160.
For me, I really don’t like the full powered ebikes because of the extra weight and drag that the motor causes (you don’t get that from the heckler sl). Plus, I am fairly fit and dont need a whole lot of assist from the motor so if I where to buy one, I’d want one that rides like a normal bike with just a touch of assist so I can squeeze in a few more laps.
Power transfer, noise, and how smooth the motor is are all huge things for me. Specialized Levo is not great at any of them, though it did ride okay.
Suspension is a huge deal with this video, not because of the lyric or dps, just has to do with the Dampers in each. I have a 38 on my yeti but it’s definitely not a “need”. I also weigh 210 and am fairly quick on my own bikes and can’t tell a huge difference (most of the time) between a 38 and 36. Remember, Richie Rude, Jessie M, Sam Hill, etc, all rode 36 or 35mm stanchions way harder than you or I. 38s are good for sure but not a deal breaker. My problem with the stuff on the bike at the time was the lack of compression damping that was causing the travel to be absolutely chewed up.
And lastly, no his bike did not die, I started the day riding my yeti, rode his heckler sl for a few laps, then back to my yeti and then took a tow for two laps to save some time. The SL still had a bar left at the end of the day.

@@CarolinaMTB cool, yea Richie Rude could out ride you and me on a Huffie! Lol (Huffie was a bike from the 1980’s), yea I’m 58 so I’ve kinda retired to DH, bike park and ebb for everything else I do like more suspension as I hate huck to flat on a 36. The only time I do not like the Torque is when I gotta lift it into my pickup truck! Enjoy the ebb and yea Yeti’s are sweet.

@MTBNC what is that thudding sound when you’re descending? Is that the motor rattling? Doesnt sound as bad as the shimano ep8 or Bosch cx motor but I do hear a thud

Not sure. It may be the motor but it went away when we switched the suspension platform. My guess is that suspension was so harsh that it was putting extra stress in components and frame causing the noise

The db8’s surprised me. With a good set of pad I bet they work good for a $60 brake set.

Yea for $60 they’re pretty dang good. They felt almost identical to the Code R to me.

It’s hard to like a bike when you’re already thinking negatively about the suspension of it

That is very true. I have ridden a TON of different bikes all with good bad and ugly suspension and have a pretty good grip on how a bike will/should ride even if it has bad parts. This specific bike, really only felt bad with the suspension when it was steep and had big hits. Undamped ramp up is never fun. Should have the bike all built up this week though so be on the lookout for an update!
