It's about time someone posted a decent video on fur hat making. Your coyotes are much heavier furred than what we have down here in Georgia. I have made several Alaskan trapper style hats and though the pattern differs significantly the assembly process is similar to yours. When sewing in the liner I often leave the opening in the front rather than the back for turning. This allows me to sew in a bill as I close up the front. A bill not only shades your eyes but it keeps the fur from tickling your eyebrows. Thank you for posting.
I'm very impressed because I thought this was going to be one of those jacked up DIY videos and it turned out to be yeah albeit definitely a home made deal but a lot more methodical than I anticipated. I have some premium coyote hides I shot and killed in South Dakota abou 5 years ago and have pretty much the same tools you have on hand. I fleshed and tanned all my hides using good tools and products and they came out primo so I'm looking forward to making my own coyote fur hat using your method, it seems simple enough. Thanks for all the pointers especially about sizing.
I followed your instructional videos and made myself a raccoon trapper hat. It took a fews weeks to make but it turned out awesome! I had two pretty large coons and I barley had enough fur to work with. The hat is crazy warm and crazy cool looking!
Hi. I followed your instructional videos and made myself a pine marten hat i followed yor great video and ewrything works well could not have done it with out your directions. The only modifications i made was to save the marten tail. Many thanks fom one new subscriber from Sweden.
+leafinitup1 Hi leafinitup, I left an opening in the back of the hat that's not noticeable; when the hat gets wet or damp I flick the moisture off, let the hat dry fur side out then flip the hat fur side in to let the hide dry. I haven't had problems with the hide stiffening up.
After watching your how to......fur hat videos I subbed immediately. You have great channel. Lots of things to learn. Greets and thumbs up from a new subscriber in Norway👍
hey thanks for getting back to me so soon! I am going to try and trap one this winter. but I think I'm going to go ahead and order a pelt so that I can practice on one so when I do trap on myself I won't screw up the project! I have everything I need except for the butcher paper and the Pelt. again thanks for getting back to me it looks like it'll be a fun project to do this winter when there's a ton of snow
Made a beaver hat for myself which I wear here in Arizona(about 3 days/yr) and a coyote hat which the grandson wears in Bismark, ND. Granddaughter is moving to Germany and will make her a beaver one with a Ermine band running the middle of the ear flaps. I could not have done it with out you.
I'm not sure what case skinning is? I am new to all this I just moved into the mountains a couple years ago been waiting my whole life LOL now I get to enjoy and have some fine. I need to search through your videos and see if you have any on properly skinning and preparing your coyote. again thanks a lot for the videos they are so informative it's got me motivated to try something new
Have a question on your lining, did you cut the same pieces for your lining as you did for the exterior of the hat all except for the ear flaps that you cut out of fur. Now you sew the lining all the way around the hat except for 4 to 5 inches on the back for turning, is this correct? My husband is making a hat and wasn't for sure how to put the lining in and you don't show it being sewn into the hat, just want to make sure we do this right. What kind if material did you use for your lining? Thanks for your help and great video. Tammy
Hi Tammy, the liner for the head is a medium weight polyester fabric I found at a sewing store. The liner is the exact dimensions as the exterior. You sew all edges together except the spot you pull the hat out from. Don't sew the interior of the hat to the exterior to adhere the two pieces as you will not be able to fold it right side out afterwards. Only sew the edges all around the hat. If this explanation doesn't do the trick, watch part 3, it takes you through the process of the interior of the h

Hey, firstly I have no idea about fur stuff and actually never even touched fur (only cat and dog fur) but wouldn´t it feel really nice if you have the fur facing inside, touching your skin? Like in gloves for example? :D Like I said I have no knowledge about fur/ leather so yeah, I just imagine that it feels amazingly soft :p
+Sanel R. I'm sure it would feel quite nice! My main concern would be sweating and the moisture it would create inside the mitt. If you could pull the inside of the mitt out to dry it out, it should work:)
+Howard Hughes Hi Howard, you could cut one longer piece instead of two pieces; I cut two pieces because I didn't have enough fur that was the same color and fur direction for one long one:)
Great video! I must have missed the flap part, because when you made the pattern, it didn't show that you cut 4 pieces for the flap. I got confused with the flaps when you sewed the inside part. Can you explain the flaps how you got that? Was the two flaps sewed in half?
+zBruha I have never done fur trim on a hood Sir. I wouldn’t want to lead you in the wrong direction... I can ask a seamstress I know for some direction if you like?
hi the lessons came in the right Moment for me... verry great and detailed - really the way i like it and:it came in right Moment for me -- just wondering what i only could do with my wonderful and Long years loved - but still never used nice fürs -- maybe i can try it -- would be grade to have the possibillity to ask you if i get in Trouble with that... thank you .... well how can i put colour and what colour can i use for the leatherside? ist there anything to mention?
Hi Ole, is it the leather side of the coyote or a separate piece of leather you want to dye? I wouldn't dye the leather side of the fur, but you could dye a separate piece of leather for the palm side of the mitt.
Sask Hunting hi Sask, it the leather side of the Coyote, but yes you ate right maybe i shold not try to dye it, ofcourse i would like to know how i could dye it if i like to.......am not shure if i shall try to make something out of the fur.... the Quality ist still verry ok of it, and maybe it ist although possible to dy other fürs i have in order to make them Little more valueable, do you have any idea how i could dye it if i only like to try? think i would try first on an other fur to avoid mistakes and really thank you so much to answer on my "letter" . have a nice day, bye ole

Thank you sir, despite the horrible video and audio, you should be able to accomplish your goal!

The hat is massive!
Good job. Really beautiful . How many coyote does it take to make this hat ? Thanks .
1-2 large coyotes.
Okay sorry if this is an absolute dumb question... but does the fur come out easily? Meaning, does it shed?
No Sir, even if you pull on it.
THE BEST HOW ITS MADE EVER.
Now I can see 3 to 4 hundred dollars. Lot of work. Great video.
Thank you for sharing. Looks fantastic
Thanks appreciate it:)

Great to hear everything made sense to you;)
Glad it worked out; nice touch with the tail. Drop me a pic at sasktrapping@gmail.com if you want:)
finished the beaver hat, looks great. have started on a coyote one for grandson in north dakota. could not have done it with out your directions.

Good on ya Howard:) glad to hear it made sense to you;)
How many beaver pelts did you use for your hat? I realize it probably depends on beaver size, let's say average size adult beaver. Thanks.
okay cool thanks and have you ever made a full cape with a coyote using the whole body head and all obviously excluding the skull?
Absolutely amazing piece! Thank you! Do you sell fur? Would love to give you some business.
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing the details. What happens if it gets wet? ... Will it shrink or firm up again?

Hi John, you can use any paper other than butcher paper; I had it laying around and I could cut it to size;) enjoy!
Awsome video, i need to go hunt some fur😁 bad with caote in Norway but we have fox 🦊
Thanks Stig:)
Thanks Henry, glad you enjoyed them:)

I agree, it’s a very warm hat;)
Glad to hear the hats are working out:)
Good job on the hat and video. Thank you for all the work and effort making it all happen. Cheers from Clovis, New Mexico!
Thanks Cecil, appreciate it! Today is the day I wouldn't mind hunting in New Mexico!
It's a cold one up in Canada lol!
+Sask Hunting 28* here in New Mexico. Not to bad, but we would rather be at the lake on a hot summer day.
Awesome video! But I'm curious,
what is you're actual head diameter?

The softest thing you'll ever feel, much softer than most cats and dogs fur
That is awesome!! So fluffy
Unbelievably fluffy! Ha!
I am making your hat out of beaver, on the 2 back panels, did u cut 2 others to back them up or 1 long piece.

He actually cut out 4 flap templates and sewed them fur to fur.
I want that hat. it seems so we'll made!! awesome video man keep up the good work!!
Thank you sir, appreciate it:)
by the way have you made one that is a full cape? And if so do you have a video for that?
+John Zanolini
I just have case skinned coyotes, I'll have to make a video for that and full:)
Ayo, seven years later, how's the hat looking friend? Did it hold up nice?
Still as good as the day that I made it.
@@SaskHunting Cracking! Thanks for the reply.
I'd love to learn how to do this (for my own head). Is there something besides your awesome video's you could suggest?

Not sure Moroni, I made the video because I couldn't find a video that showed a step by step procedure.
A thousand likes, thanks for the great vid

I had a question about making coyote fur trim for a hood of mine. Any advice one how to get started?

You know how to make a hat off pine marten fur?
Haven’t made one with Martin.
Sew the pelts together to achieve template sizes.
Never mind, I just watched the template video...
