      Good to hear sir, remember it’s not an actual commercial tan. It’s a preservation of the fur that has been performed for thousands if years;)
      A commercial tan is absolutely superior to this method....BUT, if you respect your fur and dry it out when it becomes wet, keep it in a moderate humidity (50% and under) don’t let insects procreate on it, you should be fine lol!

    This pattern and the video(s) are amazing, I just made my second hat ever, using goat skin and sheep skin, and it turned just as good as the first one.
    My first hat was for my brother, but this one is for me, and I made it just in time since next week it's predicted to drop to -15c.
    Using this pattern it took me just over 7 hours per hat, with a 2 month break between them, I'm so happy how they turned out!
    One thing I changed was making the "top/lower band" a single piece and add the "flaps" later. to minimize the sewing and prevent seems for water to get inn.
    I noticed that the lower band was 2/3 of the top (circle), exactly 120 degree! matching the human field of vision!!! that's awesome!
    Fur Hat off to you for teaching me how to make such a good hat :)

    Thanks for this, but I got a question. I've got a fox hide,tanned. But a few years back,I skinned it,from his his back,not the belly. Can I somehow still use this,to make a trappers hat? Patch up the leg holes?

    • @SaskHunting
      @SaskHunting  Год назад +2

      I would say you would need a few fox hides to make this hat.
      I believe I used the back and sides of 2 similar extra large coyotes to complete this project.

    Thank you very much for detailed explanation of the pattern. The only thing I did not get is how to get the height of the band. You get the diameter of the top circle from the circumference of the head (adding extra 1-2 inches), but what measurement should I make to get the height of the band?

    Hi! Thanks so much for your video series, I’m making one for my son :) I’m wondering if sewing a cloth lining on the edges would damage the fur on the outside? I’m not sure how to even attach a cloth lining…?

    • @SaskHunting
      @SaskHunting  2 года назад +2

      Run it along the seams of the front banding where your forehead is, ear flaps and back banding. Oh ya, this is all attached when the hat is inside out to hide the stitching. Fun

    Hi , I had another question about your hat, my husband started sewing at the back side of the hat first and he only left about a 4 1/2" opening for turning so in my option this is going to be a tight fit for turning hopefully it works out okay the only thing I'm concerned about is, the hide ripping in places so, did you have this problem with your hat and if so what do you put on the places that tore so it will hold it from further damage? What was the distance you left open for turning? I guess when you handle the skin as much as you have to makes it weak, is there something you can put on it to make it stronger? Also, some of the knots in the thread came out so would leather weld be a good thing to place on the knots or stitches to make sure they don't come out? As far as supplies I have on hand, I have Leather Weld, Barge contact cement, rubber cement, Tanner Bond contact cement. Thanks for your advice, appreciate it. Tammy

    • @SaskHunting
      @SaskHunting  8 лет назад +1

      Hi Tammy, the opening on my hat is only around 4 inches long; so I think you should be fine:)
      I used barge to strengthen the seams as barge is flexible; besides I really like the smell lol!
      Hope this helps:)

  • @ggolds9669
    @ggolds9669 5 лет назад

    Curious. Just to double check my measurements, what size hat do you normally wear? I wear a size 7 3/4.
    Following your RUclips directions my head measurement was 24" circumference. I added 1 1/2" for seam allowances, etc; thus my circle circumference was 25 1/2". Divided by Pi, I rounded to 8 1/8" diameter circle.

    • @SaskHunting
      @SaskHunting  5 лет назад

      The math looks correct. You will be adding a liner in the hat that will make the hat tighter.

  • @fredgibson5739

    Why three pices for banding? Could I use one piece?

    • @SaskHunting
      @SaskHunting  2 года назад +1

      Sure, it’s all about the fur thickness, colour and direction. Let’s say you only have 1-2 coyotes and you are running out of matching fur?
      Is your coyotes medium, large, extra large? The most important thing is that your hat doesn’t have mismatched fur pattern. In my option:)
      Good question :)

  • @seeamerica1
    @seeamerica1 8 лет назад +1

    hey how did you come up with the measurement for the banding bc I have done 25 inches for the top circle came out to almost 8inches but what about the banding

  • @shanegammell7064
    @shanegammell7064 9 лет назад +1

    so if my head was 23 inches and i made the top circle 25÷3.14=8 so the banding would be 26 right?

    • @SaskHunting
      @SaskHunting  9 лет назад

      Hi Shane, the banding would be the same circumference as the top. If the top is 25 inches then the banding will be the same; although, if you are using three pieces for the banding you will need to add extra length for each piece for seam allowance. Each piece will need to have two seam allowances. So if each seam has a 1/4" seam allowance you will have to add an extra 1 1/2 inch's overall to your banding.
      23" head circumference + 2 inch comfort allowance + 1 1/2 inch seam allowance
      =26.5"➗3= 8.83" or 8 7/8 for each piece.
      Hope this helps:)

  • @justsaying3594

    circumference of a circle is 2 times pi times r so r= circumfrence divided by 2 pie or in this case 23.5/(2*pi) = 3.68

    Great work bud! I watched all the videos on making the hat. I was actually shopping around for a coyote hat but now I'm making my own after watching these! Do you think there would be enough fur from a fox to make a hat?

    • @SaskHunting
      @SaskHunting  6 лет назад

      Thank you Sir,
      I haven’t done a hat with fox, but I’m sure it would take quite a few and you would want them to be as similar as possible in fur colour and thickness.

    • @SaskHunting
      @SaskHunting  9 лет назад

      What kind of fur are you using? Just a friendly reminder to consider the fur direction of the pattern pieces when ordering:)
      Cut out your pattern pieces and compare them to a piece of paper that's 16x12" is probably your best bet.

      Sorry, this isn’t a one size fits all template (unless you wanted to insert a elastic band in the banding?) The template that I demonstrated was for a custom fit; meaning every hat is custom measured to the individual sizings of a persons melon 🍉 😂
      This video of the making of the template enables you to custom fit your hat, otherwise you would be making a hat that is my size, not yours.

  • @LifeOfBrittany.
    @LifeOfBrittany. 9 месяцев назад

    Do you have the measurements to print out ?

    • @SaskHunting
      @SaskHunting  9 месяцев назад

      No unfortunately, I literally figured this out by trial and error. I made a mock template out of spare material to see if this would even work. Then I made the template as you see in the video. Then I used this template to make the hat.
      Also!!! This is a massively important point; every hat has to be custom made ha!
      You need a hat size to fit as it should. This template is a one off. You will need to customize this template :)

      Another thing to consider; once you finish the tanning process and you are obviously planning on wearing your creation or hanging it on the wall, keep an eye on the humidity and exposure to moisture. The hat for instance is made to get wet, you just have to dry it out correctly:) that's why I left a 3-4" unsewed seam at the back so I can turn it inside out to dry completely.

      out of curiosity. ive got a big head. 23.75". im going to take your advice on adding 2 inches for a fur lining instead of fabric. I want nice quality fur so Im buying from a reputable fur seller for garment grade fur. what size coyote did you start with? I dont want to get one too small (or rather, does an average coyote yeild enough for such a head full of itself?

    • @SaskHunting
      @SaskHunting  9 лет назад

      Hi Orion, I would say the Coyote I used to make the hat was between L-XL 40-42inches. If you want to use the under belly of the coyote for the liner, you will want to have at least XXL (go for the larger end of the scale as it's better to be safe than sorry;) your templates will be bigger than mine.
      You will have to extend your circle to 8.2" this will impact the banding lengths and ear flaps, don't forget to add a 1/4" seam allowance for each side of your seams:)
      Take your time with the template. Make your lines square and straight, measurements correct, you'll be golden!

    • @OrionFyre
      @OrionFyre 9 лет назад +1

      +Sask Hunting appreciate the input on pelt size! I've got access to CAD and a plotter so I'm sure my lines will be as true as possible :) I can't wait to get the pelt I just ordered so I can make this hat I've been wanting for years now.

    ok I made the pattern for the banding and it's a inch bigger than the circle where did I go wrong

    • @SaskHunting
      @SaskHunting  9 лет назад

      Are you using three pieces for the banding or one piece? If you are using three pieces for the banding you want it to be 1.5" longer in total equaling 26.5" once you sew the pieces together with a 1/4" seam allowance for the ends, the banding will be 25" when finished sewing the banding. You will have six seams for the banding with a 1/4" for each end of the seam.

      I get 17 3/4". The ear and back pieces equal the length of two of the banding pieces.
      18" should do the trick but you don't want the ear flaps interfering with your vision.
