and dont be afraid to dampen the fur-- makes it easy to tuck in and clamp before sewing-- and as for sewing-- grab your chapstick and keep handy-- when the needle it tough to push through-- just put a bit on needle-- glides right through... ( I am a taxidermy instructor so have a few tricks from over the year lol)-------- and if you need to use an actual needle-- go to vet clinic and ask for a 3 sided needle-- I find the longest ones easiest to use-- but so sharp!
+kimcase9 Thanks Kim:) chap stick sounds like a great idea! Being a taxidermy instructor you must cringe watching my videos lol! I now know who's brain to pick if I run into a situation;)
oh-- lol-- not worrys-- you did a great job-- remember-- I have been at this for a long time-- so sure feel free to ask away -- if you run into a snag...
You got you a new subscriber thanks for sharing this info and curtailing any furure headaches we might have to endure. Your work looks professional. I'm not sure I'll ever make mittens but the information is still gold...thanks
That would be nice:) I considered a fur lining at the beginning, but I was concerned about what sweaty hands would do to the fur lining in time. Moisture, especially oily hand moisture compounded with bacteria in a unventilated area. I’m not sure if that’s a good combination. But who knows? Let me know if it works out for you!:)
I have a Bonis B fur machine…so no seam allowances. Should I change my pattern? I’m planning on making mitts from black bear…I have shearling, pulled and sheared beaver, seal, rabbit, raccoon, possum, mink or synthetics for the liner. Any preferences? Would a removable liner be better?
Adjust your template for no seam allowance, but bigger is better for this project! Also consider the coat that this is going over! Ensure the forearm portion will fit the desired coat:) Removable would be nice, or at least a liner that can pull inside out for drying:) Shearling for liner of the mitt portion of the fingers, forearm portion I would prefer something that would slide smoothly along the jacket, that would easily dry off when wet. I feel that fur or shearling on the forearm portion would trap moisture perhaps?
Absolutely gorgeous mitten, beautifully and well made 👏👏👏 Real fur will ALWAYS look & feel better than tatty faux fur(which doesn’t even keep you warm)!
Awesome project! I'm going to try to get fur to start this project this winter. Going to try the hat too. Thank for all the videos from tanning through to the finish. Looking forward to the template video.
I like to put a large needle on the tag end when using a speedy stitcher - makes it a bit easier to run it thru the loop each time. :) I have a huge Artisan Toro 3200 Leather sewing machine, but it probably wouldn't work sewing fur. Subbed a long time ago! GREAT VIDEOS Brother!!!!!
you can cut straight down the middle of searling forearm about 6 inches... cut out a triangle of shealring and place in -- stitch the V-- again dampen and pound stitches flat-- wha-la-- wider where you need for coats
It's an old video but maybe you see it... Is there a reason you had the fur facing in that direction? I remember vaguely that I heard something about that being the better way!?
Just found ur channel and I absolutely love it, gonna do the mitts and ushanka probably this weekend with some goat fur that I have. Greetings from Argentina!
Absolutely Beautiful Work, I really want a pair of those Mitts, but I don't have access to Coyote Fur, Incredible Craftsmanship. Thanks for posting the Video.
Hi Timothy, I tanned them myself. Here is a link to one of my tanning videos. ruclips.net/video/guvwFXwUJSU/видео.html Or there is a tannery in Unity maverick-tannery-leathers.sk.xsask.com/ I hear they do good work.
how has your tan held up? any hair slippage? I finally got a coyote pelt and want to tan it this winter so I am interested to know how well your tan worked over the longer term.

Thanks Kim :)
Those are beautiful. I’m going to attempt a pair of beaver mitts. I have quite a bit of tanned hides. Thanks again for the excellent video.
Glad you enjoyed it! Good luck on the mitts:)

Thanks appreciate it, thought I would share what I learned on the fly.
I just got a few rabbit furs without having a plan for them. Thinking I might make these mitts with a leather outside and a rabbit lining
That would be nice:) I considered a fur lining at the beginning, but I was concerned about what sweaty hands would do to the fur lining in time. Moisture, especially oily hand moisture compounded with bacteria in a unventilated area. I’m not sure if that’s a good combination. But who knows?

If the contact cement (barg) stuck together in the wrong position, use a heat gun to reheat it a bit. Gives you a bit of wiggle room
I would go with shoe goo next time personally
Absolutely gorgeous mitten, beautifully and well made 👏👏👏 Real fur will ALWAYS look & feel better than tatty faux fur(which doesn’t even keep you warm)!
Are the patterns available with the additional 5/8 on each side? Also did you leave the fur length on the side or do any trimming of the fur?
The pattern is custom sizing sir, your sizing is different than mine. I demonstrated how to go about creating your own custom mittens:)
what kind of glue would you recommand to stick the sheep and coyote skins together? thanks
Barge cement

Hi Colin, let me know how they turn out. Glad you enjoyed the videos:)

Yes sir, they're sure beautiful.
you can cut straight down the middle of searling forearm about 6 inches... cut out a triangle of shealring and place in -- stitch the V-- again dampen and pound stitches flat-- wha-la-- wider where you need for coats
use wooden clothespins all the way around-- makes your job easier...or those large alligator paper clamps work as well
+kimcase9
Never thought of cloths pins lol!
I was using those black metal binder clips you find at staples;)
Gonna try and do some seal fur mitts, thanks for the guidance!
Cool, that would be awesome. Send me a pic when you’re done;)
Sask Hunting will do! May be awhile though
It's an old video but maybe you see it... Is there a reason you had the fur facing in that direction? I remember vaguely that I heard something about that being the better way!?
why did you double the back side, coyote fur side, with the leather coat? Was it just so you would have the wool on the inside?
+Tim Trammell
Hi Tim, I wanted the wool on the inside and the fur on the outside:)
Just found ur channel and I absolutely love it, gonna do the mitts and ushanka probably this weekend with some goat fur that I have. Greetings from Argentina!
Hello from Saskatchewan;)
I'm sorry you said ot a few times but what is the took your using to see with?
Thanks. I just took a class to learn this. But you’re methods are much better. What part of sask are you in. I’m in Saskatoon.
those are some beautiful mittens
these and the cyote hat make me wish Wales was cold enough to wear them
Well,It’s flippin cold enough for me to wear my mink coat up here in Lancashire,so I’m sure it’s as cold down in Wales 🥶😉
Thanks man, very well explained, will make some too. Great channel, I subscribed.
+janslos
Thanks janslos, enjoy the project!
did that video of making the patterns with measurements ever get made?
sorry, ignore. i found it
amazing job, Awesome details and they look amazing!
+Grw Udaras
Thanks:)
would rabbit pelt work too? considering how small rabbit pelt is.
+mason keithley
I don't see why not, just sew the hides together to match the dimensions; ensuring you hide the seams well and match the fur:)
+Sask Hunting thank you very much
Did you treat the outside with anything to keep it from getting wet or anything?
its a coyote fur...coyotes live outside..
Beautiful!!
Thank you!
Good job!
Thank you sir!
❤❤❤❤❤❤

+Derek Toth
No slippage for coyotes or bear yet. So far so good:)
turned out great! another project to make now ;)
Thanks Orion!
The only thing I would have changed is flipping the coyote pelt upside down so the fur is in the downward position.
Can you please look at your hands before you make mittens because our hands there are not straight like your mittens 🤔
awesome awesome awesome job!
+brewmaster0507
Thank you Sir:)
