    Great presentation and 'work' interview with John Albanese. I appreciate you taking the time to bring this to the fore. Tons of information and really brings the 'base' coin concept our as THE most important aspect of grading a coin to begin with. Thank you Seth!

    This is fantastic that you were able to to do this interview. I think people don't completely understand the whole idea of CAC and its purpose. Like he mentions many times, just because he does not sticker it, doesn't mean that it's a bad coin. Thank you Seth & John

      One of the things I see the most is that CAC verifies the grade. Which is not the case as we know but when you try and educate them, they come back with I think it's a scam to make money. Frustrating.

    Both of you absolutely nailed it. Honest, educational and fun. Demonstrates that grading isn't an exact science but when kudos are given (or withdrawn) there are solid reasons. Every collector should memorize every word of this vid.

    Also I agree with him on not Accepting all 10 of those coins. On the tab toners the pattern was pretty cool but the color and luster were flat. The 81s in 67+ looks way overgraded and has way more chatter than the two examples I have owned in the past.
    Seems to me he really doesn’t agree with the 1 point bump for color concept and he’s not going to accept those no matter how pretty they are

    I enjoyed the video. He explained each coin and I cannot fault his reasons. He has seen a ton more coins than the average dealer. I respect his incredible depth of knowledge. His grading was spot on. The coin doctors sending in a variety of different coins with all the same toning are just dumb. There was a collection that went thru a local auction, and I was writing up some of the coins as he came thru the office. He saw another dealer and said hello, looked at the coins in the album. They all graded well. When I picked them up later he saw me and said that he had seen many coins come thru with AT, but when he saw all the coins toned similarly, even the low grade ones. I learned that he looks at everything.

    Great interview, Seth. Hope to see you at the San Francisco show tomorrow. Really nice to hear JA explain his decision making as CAC has help make me a better collector. He did say “I don’t have a problem with the color” several times which is a subtle way of saying color doesn’t influence his decisions in a positive way. Whereas color is a big influence in market pricing today. I agreed with him on every coin in the interview but he may be somewhat disconnected with the current collector trend, for better or worse.

    • @louieatienza8762
      @louieatienza8762 Год назад +1

      Collector trend has zero to do with the quality of the coin. The technical grade of the coin should be just that, and not be reflective of the toning. I much prefer a system such as NGC where they designate a "star" to a coin with great eye appeal. Adding a point to a technical grade because of "color" is akin to charging more for a lemon car, just because it has a paint job. The discriminating collector will buy the best coin for that target grade, regardless of color.

    Your best interview yet Seth and the one containing the information everyone is eager to hear. It’s really helpful for us collectors to hear John’s reasoning for accepting coins or not.
    My big takeaway from this if I heard it correctly is that John is not the only one handling the submissions. I was always under the impression it was a one man operation. Obviously there’s others working in the office but I thought he was the only one looking at the coins.
    If A and B coins get a green sticker then is it A+ coins that receive a Gold ?

    Couple thoughts... seems like some collectors have sour grapes because their "toned" coins got their grades because of the toning, and if you removed that factor, their "strict" grade is a half to full point lower. Also, the TPGs were a bit more conservative in the older days, which is why those slabs get stickered.
    But this is why the TPGs have plus and star grades. What happens is, they cater to their top dealers and collectors, and bump their grades to appease them. One look at some registry set true views would show contact marks on superb gem coins that wouldn't be in that grade level without the "toning." Also toning doesn't happen from the mint. It basically happens from improper storage, whether intentional or not, whether deemed proper at the time.

    Very insightful brother, thank you for sharing!! I love toners, heck I make toners (best way to fix ugly milk spots on bullion). It drives me a little crazy how toning can skew pricing on coins. I've seen coins at shows that book for $300 but have an asking price over a grand because of "attractive toning." It's all relative I guess...

    Cant say iv ever seen those colors on gold 12:07 im not sure what caused that to be able to happen. i dont think it was heat but you do see those colors in faked torched stuff sometimes. i like the bezel theory would be awesome to see the edges of that coin under micro scope i bet hes right.

    Great video. It's quite revealing. The coin must have the correct grade irregardless of toning. Thats what CAC is all about. Eye appeal is technically the last to be taken into consideration. When it comes to toned coins, one without the other is simply incomplete.

  • @Mrgrumpypants84
    @Mrgrumpypants84 2 года назад

    I believe he said there were some coins that came in and they were minted far apart from each other in years but had the same color and that was a flag. I believe toning is caused by environment and chemical reaction over time. So, if i went out today and bought 10 pcgs 65 morgans and throw them in the same album, frame, shoebox or whatever. In 30-40 years i take them out they will likely have similar coloring due to being in the same environment together for some time.

    Interesting that he mentioned a coin being tried (submitted) 30x. Does CAC keep some sort of record on previously submitted coins? Or is each submission viewed with "fresh" eyes? I can see pluses and minuses for each argument.

    • @grantv2313
      @grantv2313 Год назад

      It’s well known that some coins get cracked and re-submitted many times in hopes of getting on grade bump if there’s a huge price jump. Some may get it some may never get it. I think he was just using that as an exaggeration that people want to pay for the coin that got the grade on first submission, not a multiple re-submit that eventually squeaked by when somebody was having a great day.
