    Actually Rebellion presale sold for 4.02$ since you can use 1 voucher to get 1$ discount on your pack purchase which was roughly worth 0.02$ cents per voucher during that time. Also for every 10 REB packs you bought during the presale your guaranteed to get a promo card which is worth 5$ right now. For every 100 REB packs your guaranteed to get a card worth 50$ as of right now if you sell it. Then their are chances you can get more then the guaranteed but just the guaranteed alone. If you bought into the Rebellion presale your 100% net positive just from the guaranteed alone. So, everyone who bought during the Rebellion presale is very happy and net positive $.

      I showed a screenshot where the packs were being sold for 5000 credits which is $5. Sure, you can add in discounts, but the advertised price from the company was the equivalent of $5. Remember that vouchers and other requirements to get the discount aren't free and need to be factored in.

    • @thepsilence
      @thepsilence 8 месяцев назад

      @@ThePartTimeEconomistthis is true, but you can literally go buy the vouchers for (today) 0.035. So 5 vouchers is around $0.175 and represents an overall $0.825 savings on a single pack. On top of that, you can get up to 15% bonus packs in a bulk order, and may people join group buys to accomplish this. That means the price per pack is closer to $3.63 today, lower than the asking price of $3.72 on Hive Engine. And that's without accounting for any kind of pre-sale deal as mentioned above, that's if you bought today. :)

    • @daethical
      @daethical 8 месяцев назад

      Well, part of the reason why people are able to sell them at a lower price is because of the discounts as well as the airdropped cards. These sellers aren't losing money on the packs that they bought. @@ThePartTimeEconomist

      @@ThePartTimeEconomist Like it was said, the voucher was 2ct at the time. So the price people bought at was $4.02. The current price is about 5% lower. And people who bought packs got the airdrop cards for it. Which is why packs were usually cheaper on the second-hand market back then, because you only get the airdrops when you buy from the store.

    Hi! I really like the way you present the data in such a clear and concise manner. HOWEVER... I feel like there is more to those numbers than the data represents, and that while you're not "wrong" with some of your assertions, due to omission of certain data points they don't truly represent the state of Splinterlands accurately. For example, packs being "sold for $5, but can be bought for less than $4 online". True, but you can use 5x Vouchers (0.035 each) to get $1 off, and you can also receive a discount for buying in bulk which brings pack costs to only $3.63 each, points which were not mentioned in the video. Another consideration: The loss of value from Untamed comes from it rotating from Standard with the release of Rebellion, a phenomenon that occurs with EVERY TCG on standard rotation, including even Magic the Gathering (I've been playing MtG since 1996 and this literally happens every rotation). The good thing about Splinterlands is that you are able to accumulate rewards the entire modern life cycle of the cards, which you can then leverage into buying the next set, which offsets the "loss of card value" from the set that rotates while also keeping the assets to play in "wild" (the Magic equivalent of "legacy"). The mobile app is no longer being used since Splinterlands is undergoing "Tech Modernization" and you can simply navigate to the next.splinterlands site and play in any browser without requiring the use of a dedicated app anymore. The "founders" also split up to focus on 2 separate but intertwined projects: Aggy left to work on Invennium (GLX / Arcade Colony: you should check out Moon Karts, it's looking awesome!) while YabbaMatt stayed to focus solely on Splinterlands projects. I do agree, there was a point when the company went too heavy into Chaos Legion with the expectation that we were in the midst of a huge bull run, and they made waayyyy to many packs, then sold them too aggressively, which reduced their prices cross the board for other sets as well since the prices for CL were so low and you didn't need other "expensive" sets to play anymore. This caused a loss of consumer confidence and people who had just joined, lost a lot of money. The team learned from that mistake and is no longer offering pack discounts (aside form the bulk bonuses) and huge sales which would cause overbuying and reduce the card prices. If you look at the Rebellion marketplace you will see very healthy prices across the board, with Gold Foil Legendary cards going for hundreds of dollars, and a new airdrop system that is both fun, and monetarily rewarding for holding the new cards / packs which also retains their value. As far as DAPP Radar and the decreasing number of daily transactions: Splinterlands has been aggressively targeting bot farms and making it more difficult for them to extract value from the ecosystem, as well as having implemented a "bot free modern" format where you will only face other "human" players, so those numbers are again, misleading, since they represent extractors leaving, and higher rewards being paid from the reward pool to the actual players! Since you are a former player, I really, REALLY encourage you to give the game another try, or at least look deeper into all of the new, POSITIVE changes happening in the game! The founders even have a bi-weekly "Town Hall" where they answer community questions and give out additional game info, so they are not hiding somewhere, nameless and faceless, to rug pull people. Feb 29th they will also be doing implementing an entirely new method of ranked play, which fixes a LOT of the old problems and will increase rewards, reduce penalties, and make the game less complicated and easier to onboard new players! It would (Feb 29) be a really exciting time to give it another try and I encourage yo to do so! I would LOVE to see you do a follow up video on Splinterlands 2 months from now when you better understand what's happened and how the ecosystem is working TODAY. I think it's a trend these days to make "the worst NFT WEB3 game evar!" style videos, I see them all the time. This isn't one of those games, and I would love to see you reevaluate your position with a follow up in the future. Thank you for reading all this! I hope you have a great day and continue to produce more videos!

    • @ThePartTimeEconomist
      @ThePartTimeEconomist  8 месяцев назад

      I really appreciate your detailed response to the video, and I think it really helps that you are an MTG player as well. I think that there is always (even outside of web3) a balance game developers have to strike between making a new flashy set to get players interested and preserving the value of previous products. That's why power creep is so common in virtually every game and is why players feel like they have to always buy the new set to keep up. I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with this as it is just the way the TCG market works, and outside of a few "reserve list" type cards, people expect to loose money purchasing new sets. Like I said in the video, I do like Splinterlands. I want it to succeed. I will never ever make a video criticizing someone for showing off their Splinterlands battles on live stream or talking about how they can't wait to attend Splinterfest and be a part of the community. This video is specifically a reaction to the people who over emphasize the earning potential of the game. It doesn't bother me if someone looses money on their hobby, and that's why I'm not making a "MTG is trash" video. It is a reaction to the creators that constantly encourage people to keep buying in because it "just has to go up" at some point in the future. It is certainly possible that Splinterlands assets could go up in price, and I hope they do for the benefit of all the people that play the game. At the same time, I wanted to provide data to show that this price appreciation isn't by any stretch a guarantee and that there is risk involved. Bascially, I want people to be aware that investing in an NFT game is the same as any other investment. It has risk, they should know the risk, and if they chose to accept that risk, I'm hoping it works out for them. Once again, thanks for the thoughtful, reasonable comment.

    My rebuttal consists of 3 points
    1. Basically any web3 game made before 2021 that has followed the exact same pattern
    2. You compare everything now to the peak of the last bull cycle…. Once again you can make the same argument about games like Axie infinity (arguably even worse)
    3. Untamed packs you bought when you started for $3 are now selling at $10…. why leave that out?

    • @ThePartTimeEconomist
      @ThePartTimeEconomist  8 месяцев назад +1

      I appreciate you giving a reasonable response to the video. I think that points 1 and 2 show that the entire P2E ecosystem as flawed as I have indicated in previous videos, the fact that it has happened to other games doesn't make splinterlands any better IMO. I can respect point 3, but even with that, someone would have had to buy at exactly the right time. I think with virtually ALL of the blockchain games, the people that bought in early made money.

    I love Splinterlands. But it has become seriously complicated. The more sets they release the more card options there are to play. It is a game that really requires a desktop pc or laptop to play. In today’s world, mobile gaming on phones and tablets is a huge dominant market. We don’t have an app on ios or android to compete. This is what we need. There are alot of promises not being delivered on time. I think we can still engage new players and have a run up next bull, with a loyal following of players. But the mobile web3 gaming market is about to explode and dozens of new gaming studios are doing big things way beyond what Splinterlands is doing. 😢

    • @ThePartTimeEconomist
      @ThePartTimeEconomist  8 месяцев назад +1

      I agree with you about the complexity. It feels like you have to buy every new set and get every niche card just to have a shot at winning. I do remember using the android app to play at one time though. Has this been discontinued?

    • @daethical
      @daethical 8 месяцев назад

      The android app still exists but the don't plan on updating the app until they've completed their technology update. This way they don't have to make changes to the App every time they make a change to the website. As an addendum, I play on my android phone using Google Chrome (filtered to desktop mode) and I enjoy playing on that more than i enjoy playing on my computer/laptop.@@ThePartTimeEconomist

    Question: Where is your recent objective data that the game "Offers itself as a play to earn game with a focus on earning"? The current CEO, Yabapmatt, adjusted the company marketing presentation as "play to own" with less focus on, much less guarantee to, earn money above one's "investment." You have presented historical analysis of Expectation vs. Reality as it turned out. However, presenting that as the current or future outlook ignores the drastic change to your fundamental assumption of the game's marketing focus, and thus your 'yardstick' to measure against.

The big number is tournament winnings to date - which arguably could be caveated better (i.e. it was at time of tournament, which included the last bull run) Where does the website highlight the earning potential a net positive over a given investment? if you bought Untamed when they were out, you would have made a lot of money. Not sure what data you are looking at. Pack buyers got airdrops, airdrops were summoners, Kitty, Yodin, Llama... these were litterally worth thousands of dollars at the top, and cost 10-20 USD when they were launched.
    Even today, these cards are worth hundreds and hundreds.
    This video comes across as poorly researched. Having said that, I appreciate you covering it, even if I disagree.

    • @ThePartTimeEconomist
      @ThePartTimeEconomist  8 месяцев назад +1

      I appreciate your comment, but I was not comparing untamed to its release price. As indicated in the video, and supported by the screenshot, it is indisputable that untamed has lost about 60% value in the 6 month period.

    • @thepsilence
      @thepsilence 8 месяцев назад +4

      @@ThePartTimeEconomist to be fair, that has a lot to do with the new set that came out (Rebellion). Untamed rotated out of modern, reducing its use case in the most popular format. If you play any paper TCGs like Magic the Gathering this is what happens when sets rotate and they drop out of modern. It's part of the tcg cycle. Lucky you can use the rewards you earned while the set was available in modern to buy into the next new set and offset some of the "losses"!
