THE 300: My Calcium Reactor Setup (best way to get a consistent drip rate)

  • In this episode of RealReefingTV we discuss my calcium reactor setup, Masterflex pump and how to get a consistent drip rate and PH with the help of the right equipment. The calcium reactor is one of the coolest pieces of equipment on our tanks in my opinion. It melts the dead coral skeletons inside down by lowering the ph inside the reactor with CO2 and drips the calcium and alkalinity rich water back in your sump. My calcium reactor set up is the Korallin C3002 with the Carbondoser electronic solenoid and #20 CO2 tank with the MasterFlex Peristaltic pump powering it and keeping the drip just right!

    On my apex, I had to add code to shut the co2 tank off when the recirculating pump in the calcium reactor watts drops below a certain threshold. The ph parameters didn't work to shut off the co2 if the recirculating pump got bogged down from too much co2. I need to get that carbondoser co2 regulator at some point but for now, this works

    Nice video. I use an IKS Vario Blue 2 peristaltic pump to feed mine. That plus a carbon doser regulator makes it so easy to tune and to reset after changing out a gas bottle.

    Great video. This is the only way I’d run a calrx anymore. Been running a masterflex for a couple years now and find it interesting that your actually starting to see reef equipment manufactures take cues from the reefing community and market peristaltic pumps for use with calcium reactors.

      I don't think it matters what they are as long as you can keep a consistent pH in the reactor. One regulates the size of the bubbles and the other the frequency of the bubbles.

    Two little fishies reborn is the best. I add about 1/10 the recommended amount of two little fishies remag and that holds my mag stable.

    Great video man very informative 👌 Does you carbon doser regular plug directly into you ph controller that is in your calcium reactor?

    • @RealReefingTV
      @RealReefingTV  6 лет назад +1

      scott wells thanks! I use my apex to monitor the ph and the carbon doser is plugged into the apex but the apex never has to intervene (turn on or off). This is because the carbon doser and masterflex are so precise that once dialed in the ph is rock solid.

    I have the same calcium reactor , what u do with the water output 2? Output 1 is what u have used for your peristaltic pump, I’m curious on the output 2, thanks for the video :)

    • @RealReefingTV
      @RealReefingTV  6 лет назад

      fansolate I only use the output that is on the top of the reactor, the other one allowed gas to build up at the top. Good question👍

    First off I would like to say thank you for making this video. Second I am having a problem trying to get my reactor to maintain the levels in my tank. I am using the koralin c1502 reactor the carbon doser, and a kamoer fx-stp pump. I noticed two things about your reactor. First the media is really low. Is that just because its at the end of its life? Also it looks like there is no gap between the water in your reactor and the top of your reactor. I have a gap of air on the inside of the reactor between the top and the water level. Is this normal, or is there something wrong with my setup? I would love to have your input please!

    • @RealReefingTV
      @RealReefingTV  5 лет назад

      Yes the media was low and hadn't been refilled in some time when I made this video. I use the outlet on the top of the reactor that comes right out of the lid as opposed to the outlet that comes off of the pipes.

    • @RealReefingTV
      @RealReefingTV  5 лет назад

      It's normal for the system to work that way if you use that outlet. I use the other because I don't like having air in the system.

    • @RealReefingTV
      @RealReefingTV  5 лет назад

      Additionally, I have the peristaltic pump draw water through the reactor as opposed to pushing into it. Not sure if that's the best way but just the way I do it😊 hope this helps 👍

      @@RealReefingTV easy to keep the reactor full if your pushing the water thru is to use both outlets connected with a tee and then to the tank. That's what i did and PROBLEM solved.

    Have the same regulator but having trouble getting a consistent bubble size and frequency. What pressure do you have your CO2 set on?

    • @RealReefingTV
      @RealReefingTV  6 лет назад

      Jeff’s Reef Tank the regulator may actually not be off, it could just be your bubble counter. If you have the regulator turned down it may take your regulator more than one "bubble" to actually pump a bubble out of the counter. I'll comment when I get home what my settings are.

    • @jeffsreeftank
      @jeffsreeftank 6 лет назад

      Its set at 5lbs... sound too low?

    • @RealReefingTV
      @RealReefingTV  6 лет назад

      Jeff’s Reef Tank I have mine set to 9 pounds and 4 seconds per bubble but use that as a starting point and set your reactor to 2 drops per second, then reduce the flow based on the calcium and alk uptake.

    • @RealReefingTV
      @RealReefingTV  6 лет назад

      Jeff’s Reef Tank if you have an apex and can put in your reactor set your regulator to turn off at 6.5 and on at 6.55 this will make sure a disaster doesnt happen. I would then set to 1 drip per sec and go up from there. Remember small changes and monitor.

    • @jeffsreeftank
      @jeffsreeftank 6 лет назад +1

      Yes I'm going slow... Been slowly tuning for the last two weeks. Affluent PH has been hovering around 7.3. 30ML per min. I just bumped up the Co2 to 9lbs 1 bubble per 10 seconds for now... Bubble frequency increased slightly. Thanks for the reply, I will let you know how things progress.

    I’m getting the same reactor and the way you have it set up your not using the designated outlet section? Your using the top outline to feed the master flex then the master flex is pushing the effluent out? Did I get that right?

    • @RealReefingTV
      @RealReefingTV  5 лет назад

      Yes the masterflex is pulling the effluent out of the reactor from the top outline.

    • @PRFishGirl
      @PRFishGirl 5 лет назад
