- Опубликовано: 12 сен 2024
- TYT has released a new Dual Band DMR Radio in the form of their classic MD-380, which they have deemed the MD-UV380. It looks the same, feels the same, and acts nearly the same, except with updated firmware and features, and having both bands for DMR.

This is my best episode so far....so many bloopers and errors and edits........and you kept calm all the way through it........brilliant.
You are the Micheal McIntyre of ham radio 2.0....... Think i need one of those caps, its getting warm here now......
Chris Collins Well it is called "Live from the Hamshack" have you noticed?
Really liked this, you convinced me to get this as my FIRST radio- just got my GENERAL
I have one on order from Martin Lynch & Sons in the UK. I'll see how I get on
@@coltonwarner7886 It's OK for the money. Not really possible to program from the keypad - needs codeplug programming on the PC. Menus are a bit clunky but not the worst. Build quality is excellent though 👍
Recently bought the UV390. I love it. I get teh firmware error when trying to upload contacts. I have tried emailing TYT several times asking for the latest firmware with no response. Any chance you can point me in where the latest firmware is? I can’t find it on there website.
I need this too :(
Nice job explaining the various TYT options for the consumer
Jason. Some laptops (and PC's) have very limited current capability on the USB sockets This can cause issues such as poor connectivity, dropping the connection or sometimes a failure to even see the device. It happens on my HP laptop every time I plug in my Nooelec SDR too. The solution is to connect it via a powered USB hub. It doesn't happen with the FTDA or Prolific programming leads as these are more like a modem. Obviously these won't work with radios which have a straight connection though
I have the Retevis RT-3S GPS. It is the same radio as TYT UV-380. I had the same issue trying to load the DMR contacts. I found a youtube video by M6CEB on the Retevis RT-3S with links to 2-versions of firmware. One version allows you to enter up to 120,000 Contacts to the radio. The other default version allows 8-hours recording. I now have all my contacts working perfectly.
This isn't unique to this radio. TYT has those 2 versions of firmware for the MD-2017 also.
The "issue" with this radio, I found out later, was that there are 2 versions of the CPS. One says UV380 and one says UV390GPS. But if you use the UV380GPS, you are supposed to use the UV390GPS CPS. And if you install both onto your computer, Windows sees them as the same program, so it puts a (1) after the 2nd install.
It isn't confusing at all >.>
thanks for the awesome unboxing review.
Thanks for watching.
Through the CPS
Very Nice! Im looking forward to picking up a 380 soon.
I really dont care for dual band, its just going to be for DMR use.
We're starting to see some VHF DMR repeaters in my area.
After watching your videos I have decided to dabble in DMR. If you have a giveaways again Id love to know to get my hands on a new radio :D. Thank you!
Yes I plan to do some more giveaways soon.
Hi Jason , hey great video. I am in the market for another handy talkie. I am sick of my Baofeng UV5R. These TYT radios look well built. We can get them up here in Canada. I just go to Radioworld in Toronto , Ontario. They have a great selection of radios. I really like your videos. They help the new or experienced ham operator. Take care , 73's VE3NCV , Gary from Ontario , Canada.
GPS - At only $10 difference - Why Not? May come in handy one day one way.
Jason, What is the official firmware update number for the md-uv390??
Thank you for the great video, have fun in Ohio
After much much searching I found a dmr repeater in Troy and Belton Tx. Added them by software because they are not in any codeplug I could find. I am in Temple too far away from Austin and College Station.
Thanks for commenting. Have you looked at codeplugs on DMRtexas.net?
@@HamRadio2 I was about to give up looking when I found it there. I had many list of repeaters in Texas and not listed. Pretty sure I have them programmed correctly but still waiting for my call sign to post so I can get an Id. Found a frequency for a dmr repeater in Temple but no information on talk groups.

They are the same. The only firmware update that would work for my new MN-UV 380 GPS was the firmware for the 390.
Correct because the only real difference in firmware is the GPS and non-GPS versions. The model number doesn't matter
@@HamRadio2 50 Miles to the closest DMR repeater. I might buy one of those Abree 43 inch just for the hell of it.
Does it have VFO option?
BTW, I’m using the Baofeng microphone on my MD-380. No issues. It works just fine.
Not true VFO, no.
Ham Radio 2.0. So far the Anytone Dual DMR HT D868UV is the only one that comes with VFO option too. This is a big plus.
It does, but, It's not a simple button toggle. Mode has be changed in the menu (it can be changed from the radio).
Thanks for the replies. Can anyone help with finding a driver for the programming cable for windows XP?
Great Video
As a former TYT seller might you know where I can get programming support for my new md uv 380.
How about a video on how to program analog repeaters.
Hey Thanks! Great video!
Glad you liked it!
This is my first ham radio, it was working fine, and I was able to write my on code plug following videos on different channels. But all the sudden my radio stopped being recognized by the computer. I get a code 10 error. Does anyone had this problem and know how to fix it, that could point me in the right direction.
Nice Video. I just ordered a TYT MD-UV380 DMR radio and can you let me know if this will work with a rasberry pi hotspot? I have older dugital radios and the DMR license. Hotspot to be delivered Wednesday. There aren't currently any DMR repeaters close enough. Thank Yoy
Yes it sure will
Jason, got the same firmware error with importing contacts in my MD2017. I finally realized the error was coming up because I opened my code plug and tried to do it. When I simply opened the software, did the import, and did the write it worked fine. Don't know if that's your problem or not.
rtarchib No, I tried that. It was a mis-match with the CPS and firmware versions
Great videos, question how do you put the MD-UV-390 on promiscuous mode? what works for the md-380 does not for this model.
I think it is called "monitor mode" on that radio.
how do you unlatch the battery on the 390" I bought from buy from two-way radio. It is missing a screw on the beltclip. I had installed the bat b4 the clip. My vission is bad, I cant find the page that talks about that..
So, essentially the only difference betweeen a dual band GPS 380 and a dual band GPS 390 is the waterproof shell?
Yes, exactly.
The thing about people, si some always complain. They're not happy unless they are complaining about something.
Hi Jason.
I have a TYT MD- UV380 which I have got stuck on DFU mode. Tried to upgrade the firmware, but it blocked its self, so all I have now is: A mduv380 which has a blank screen, no noise and its DFU Red/Green flashing. Anyway of getting it out of the DFU mode???, or is it bricked junk??
Great video mate.
Regards M7ATX David
It should come out of DFU mode once you turn it off and on again. If that doesn't work, remove the battery and let it sit for a while - maybe 10-20 minutes, then try again. If that still fails, then yes, I would say it is bricked.
Is it worth to look at Retevis RT3/S instead of TYT 380/390 ? They look so similar like one brand clones another. Or even made on the same factory. Do you know something about it and can comment somehow. I got two radios already following you advice Anytone 878 (BT+GPS) and TYT MD-UV 390. But I need two more. So again asking your opinion. I also found Retevis RT50 which is without direct frequency input but looks nice and also DMR.
Is the MD-UV380 a good starter radio? I found it on sale at buytwowayradios and got it for 89 bucks, sadly I couldn't find it with gps
Yes that is a good radio to start with on DMR
My TYT MD-UV380 flashes red and green when I power it on and the screen does not illuminate. Does anyone know what the problem is?
I'm getting back into Ham after a long break. The digital is all new to me. What got me back into ham was S.O.T.A. I'm looking for a way to send a spot when on a summit and no cell service. I'm told I need an APRS radio (totally Greek at this point). I see in the information on the radio that it has a section in the guide that describes text messaging. Will the 390 (GPS model) allow sending text to activate a spot?
Would u recommend the uv380 or 90 over the md 2017. I'm looking at both
For a friend as a gift.
MD-UV390 would be my choice
I know this is an old video. I’m new to ham radios and I bought the tyt uv380g. What’s you recommendation on where to start from. Like I said I’m new to the ham radio world.
Great video. What's a great retractable/ expandable antenna for the tyt uv380. Thanks.
can someone please post a link to the beginners class I think it was show 38? three classes. I like the way this guy teaches and want to get my technician lic.
Looks like a good radio think everyone like see part 2 on this new radio all new radios are a new experience.
Thnk dual band should poosh " the price down on mono banders.
Tyt dmr known for it's good quality.
Thanks 4 Video 😃 .
Duane Shuster Yeah I'm thinking of doing a video with successful firmware updates on this radio and the MD9600
Man I am late to the party… Ham Radio 2.0 is this still a decent contender for dmr???
yes but better options now too
@@HamRadio2 thanks man, im going to check around and pull the trigger in a week or so! Keep up the good work!
What’s the deference between md390,uv390 and the md-uv390
The UV models are dual band, the others are not
I know this video is old at this point. but i have a question. I created a scan list but when i press scan the list doesn't come up. in fact other that the beep to acknowledge the button press nothing happens. I'm running the latest firmware.....
HI. I'm looking for a front face of a TYT MD 380 or Retevis RT3S.
Just the front face with plastic glass not broken.
You got that ?
I'm in Swiss. Thanks.
I got one of these radios, but I am having a problem with programming not sure if it is my computer or the program that needs to be downloaded to my laptop. I know this is old but could you help with that?
Okay, got my TYT MD-UV380. Every one says I'm too loud, is there away to adjust the Microphone gain? Or do I just need to talk quieter? And what software are you using.
this may be a dumb question, but are you set to the right bandwidth for whatever channel you are on? it’s possible you are using wide band on a narrow band channel but i could be wrong. ik the camp i worked at used narrowband and mine was set to wideband so i sounded loud and they sounded quiet. i could be totally off the ball on your problem but if u hadn’t checked that, i suggest looking into it :)
@@sage3404 From what people have told me, its only when we are using DMR, and I don't know if it has "Bandwidth" And I just looked through the menu of the radio and did not see any thing like wide or narrow, Like is on my TYT UV8000d
So, if the 380 and 390 are the same internally, can you flash 390 firmware to the 380?
The firmware is the same, there is no separate versions between 380 and 390. The only difference is between GPS and non-GPS versions.
@@HamRadio2 Loving the channel! I only know of one other ham in the Metroplex. I'm still studying for my Tech and General.
Thanks for watching, and good luck on your tests.
The most important question is this: what type of receiver does it have? Is it a super heterodyne like the MD-380, or is it just another direct conversion receiver?
If it's just direct conversion then this radio is no better than any of the other dual band DMR radios right now. If it's superheterodyne then this radio will be the first of the next generation of Chinese DMR radios.
radiosification I've no idea. I can find out though
That would be super helpful, thanks
great question!
Hi, did you manage to find out? Thanks
on radiosification.blogspot.com/2017/11/comparison-of-dmr-radios.html it says it's NOT super heterodyne receiver.
I bought the uv md 380 today at the Va Beach Hamfest. I have the programming software installed. Please explain channel member A and B. Is that in reference to the UHF and VHF? The manual does not explain it. It only tells how to program the radio by hand. Tnx de wb4ur.
A and B are the dual display features. You can have 2 channels displayed at the same time on the main screen, top and bottom. A is top and B is bottom, or vice versa. Either way, it allows you to monitor 2 channels at once, rather than 1.
Thank you, Jason :) I have also downloaded the updated version of the N0GSG Contact Manager (V2.60) that works with the MD-380/390, MD2017, and now supports the UV MD 380/390. And I like seeing the unboxing of new radios :) 73s Wb4ur We are getting ready for Cat 4 Hurricane "Florence" that is supposed to be here Thursday.
I've been hearing about that hurricane, hope you stay safe out there.
Great video. Helpful. I am a new TYT UV390 owner. Has anyone noticed how loud the radio is? Even at vol setting 1, radio is loud. Not sure if I am missing a radio setting in the software to help control this. (?)
I did kind of hate that. I still use an analog radio at times for one of those reasons - the ability to have volume precision. In most cases, 1 is louder than I need.
Thanks, good video. My question is...other than dualband and GPS is it better than the 380? Is it the same as the 2017?
Depends on what you mean by "better"
It is very similar to an MD2017, yes. TYT made this model because so many people loved the MD380, but complained about the design, antenna, and trackball on the MD2017. So this model is basically an MD380 body with an MD2017 menu/options/screen
I had forgotten about that trackball thing that people didn't seem to like...
It never bothered me. The keypad lockout locks the trackball also, but then they added a trackball lockout that works separately from the keypad lock. So if you really don't like it, you can lock it out 2 different ways.
Is this your goto dmr ht for the $100 range?
I am getting the firmware error when I try to load contacts for database. Radio firmware S018.003. CPS V01.10. Are they not compatible?
Pretty sure you need the newer CPS for that version of firmware.
My county uses a digital frequency of 460.050 would this scan this
Yes

Just got the MD-UV-380, and I do like it. Still learning DMR and all of it's intricacies (steep curve for an old guy). Just wondering...how do you get contact information to display when receiving a call via a TG? All I get is the ID # and "Unknown".
You need to load the contact database through the TYT CPS. There is an option under "Program-->contacts" for it.
@@HamRadio2 Worked like a champ! Thanks!
I have one of these radios, but I can't find out how to delete the recordings, I wonder if you can help me there.
Unfortunately no, I haven't ever used the Recording feature because I load the CSV version of the firmware instead, which allows the device to load 100,000 contacts instead of doing recordings.
@@HamRadio2 OK, thank's, the record function was turned on by default when I bought it, and I now have hundreds of recordings, but the user manual doesn't tell you how to delete them, and I can't find any menu item to do it.

You're the first person on RUclips to show the UV380 radio that I've seen. I didn't know they were doing a 390 variant. I'm guessing it will probably be $50 or so more. Any idea when it may be released? How's the scanning with a TG on once channel and analog on the other? Promiscuous mode is said to be built in to this unit so that's one feature from md380tools that won't have to be added. If that's the case maybe they'll add it officially via firmware to the current 380/390. Did they add the last contact received also? Any other quirks other than the CPS?
Dapper Ribbit It's out now. I don't think it'll be that much more. Maybe $20-$30, but not 100% sure
I've not seen promiscuous mode on this radio. I don't use scan on DMR so I didn't test that. No last heard that I saw either.
Thanks for the replies. You're the first person I've seen selling the UV 380, maybe people are waiting until after this weekend, Will you be selling the UV390? I thought when I looked at the spec sheet for the UV380 is said it had promiscuous mode. Would you choose the UV380/390 or AnyTone AT-D868UV Oh yeah I subbed to your channel #thumbsup
Dapper Ribbit Yes I'll have the 390 also. I think I still prefer the Anytone though. But I'm liking this one alot.

380 or the 2017?
ok i seem to be seriously lost i bought TYT MD-UV380 dual band with gps and im clueless on how to use it please help
I assume those cables use different chipset drivers. The MD-390 was the first to abandon the Serial to USB mapping chipsets. I'm somewhat confused by the title of this episode, is there a dual band version of the MD-390 called the MD-UV390?
Yes, both the MD380 and MD390 now have dual band versions, which have "UV" in the model number.
Great, thanks a lot for the reply. When I saw your info, I tried to Google the UV-MD390 and didn't have much luck, I'll give it another try. I have been using an MD-390 daily for years and it has proven itself in the field. I'd assume as the new one is dual band, they have had to abandon the superhet architecture of the MD-390 in favour of direct conversion as found in the UV-8200 dual band.
The correct model number is MD-UV390. Although I haven't found many of the retailers carrying that model, mostly just the MD-UV380.
Thanks for that. Being a user of the MD-390, I completely understood why your preference is for the MD-390 form factor. I noticed that the UV-380 uses a different battery, which, as you point out, attaches to the battery pack rather than the radio chassis. Is the battery on the MD-UV390 the same as the MD-390? From what I can gather from a quick search, the only difference between the two of them is the case, with the MD-UV390 being more rugged and waterproof?
I just purchased this same radio TYT MD-UV380, i have followed your description on how to program the radio and i am not receiving any audio. I can receive audio on analog. Do you have any tip or ideas what i maybe doing wrong ... KD2RJZ

Leonard Belcher Yes
i have a problem which i cant find on google. when i import the codeplug it doenst show in the contacts list. why is that??
Do the contacts show in your codeplug when you open it in the CPS?
@@HamRadio2 yes they do.
@@GalaxyHighMarshal Are there over 1000 of them? Are they group contacts or private contacts?
The only contacts that should show in the Digital Contacts section of the codeplug are the Group Contacts, which are your talkgroups. Then you load your Private contacts through the "Write Contacts" menu of the CPS, and those load into a different section of the radio memory, which won't allow them to show in the Digital Contacts section of the radio.
@@HamRadio2 i shall check that out, thx. But why is it that what ever i write it get ignored by the radio, i am new. I got a cd did the fw thing and got locked out or bricked. I ran EditCp and a lot of chinese crap got read, so i opened up "General settings" tab. Saw a password longer that 8 characters. I unchecked power on password, left PC Programming pass blank and Radio Programming Password with 0 x8.
I click write to radio, nothing really changed. So i read it again to see if it changed anything, nope still the same. I really got my self into trouble didnt i? Thx for responding, i got mine today its a tyt-380.
When you write to the radio, there should be a status bar that comes up on the CPS screen, and the face of the radio should say "PC Programming". If neither of these things happen, my guess is that your computer isn't seeing the radio correctly, maybe because of a driver in Windows. Sometimes a cable will go bad, but usually it is the Windows driver, not the cable.
ty for corsica island mediterane is ok very good
Hi. Nice video. I have some questions about this radio. 1st, I am new to digital radio so I purchased this radio to start with because it is dual band digital and analog. I hope I made the right decision. I live in the Hoosier DMR area, (Henderson KY). I believe we only have one local DMR repeater (I probably should have looked into this first), in Evansville IN. Sooo, I need someone that can walk me through what this radio can do and how to do it. I heard of people using them with a hotspot to get to more people through the internet, but I do not know how to do that either. I am struggling with the programming of local analog repeaters also. I hope you can either point me to a getting started video of yours or someone else's to get me going. BTW, the versions are now firmware v018.003 and cp v01.08 Thanks in advance from a newbie to digital radio. Please tell me I did not make a mistake buying this particular radio. lol

If I were you, I'd reach out to the Hoosier DMR guys and ask these questions. They are quite helpful. They can give you more info about repeaters in your area.

@@HamRadio2 ok, thanks anyway.

Turn promiscuous mode off and you'll stop receiving traffic from other talkgroups
Thanks for replying - actually the problem is that I'm _not_ able to hear the other talkgroups. When I said that it's receiving chatter, I mean that I can tell that it's receiving the data, but I cannot hear it. I wasn't totally clear - my bad.
Gotcha. Then you may have the wrong color code or other setting in your codeplug. If Promiscuous mode is on, you should hear everything on that repeater.
I hope soon they will be able to do regular APRS.
Todor Tihomirov Anytone will have a version with that very soon
If they menage to keep the price for aprs radio not very high, aprs will become more common .
Kenwood th-d74 is around 600. If they can make it a bit simpler and around 1/2 or 1/3 of the price it will be nice.

o
So this confuses alot of people, probably because TYT didn't do it correctly. But here it is....
There are 2 versions of the CPS for the new UV-series radios. It has NOTHING to do with that model you are using. The only difference is if you have the GPS or non-GPS version of either radio. So the GPS software will work on the UV380 and UV390 GPS models. The non-GPS software will NOT work on these models, and you will get the "wrong model' error.
So don't worry about whether or not your CPS says UV380 or UV390. Use the GPS version of the CPS for the GPS radio and you will be all good.
For the firmware error, make sure you have the "CSV" version of the firmware installed. There are 2 versions of firmware also - CSV and REC. You will get the "firmware error" when trying to write more than 1000 contacts to a radio that holds the REC firmware. Update to the CSV firmware and you should be fine.
@@HamRadio2 thanks for that will try to upload the firmware as I do have the rec function in my radio. Love the videos. 73
So quick up date here it worked like a charm. I was able to put the firmware on it that you recommend and upload the contacts to the radio. Big Thanks
when i go to program it says usb not found
Your computer doesn't see it. Probably a driver issue
Are you alive and kicking after you big trip?
Leonard Belcher Yep. I have some vids I'm working on
do not get the baofeng dm-x
Why? I want to get one just to review it, honestly.
@@HamRadio2 The battery life is horrible and it is so hard to find the programming software and most of the time transmissions do not go threw
Geez you go off topic a lot
This video is 4 years old. MANY changes to my format since then
But he still replies to all his old videos! Whatever you need to know drop him a comment, if he can help he surely will. Hard to find that on youtube.
@@HamRadio2 Newer videos are much better, good job.
the uv380 has promiscuous mode?
Someone mentioned on Facebook that it ONLY does promiscuous. I have not found that to be true, and I have not found a setting in the menu with any such name.
I would not go to that FAKE so called Dayton show if it was free and I had a chauffeur driven limousine to carry me,free food,& a free 5 Star hotel room. I’ll take Orlando Hamcation and pay my own expenses anytime over Dayton or whatever it is now. I am looking at buying one of these HT’s in a week or so and that’s why am here watching your video.
worse radio I have ever tried to use
Absolutely, the biggest POS I have ever seen. This HT is nothing but trouble for 2 years. I’ve decided to go “office space printer mode” on it and call it a loss.
