Many years ago I spent almost a year living in a van. One of the happiest times in my life. Only thing I’ve noticed now days is people seem to go overboard trying to turn there van into a motor home. I just threw a mattress in mine and I was good to go.
Living out of a vehicle solo is great, the problem starts when its shared with someone else over a long period of time, you no longer have personal space or privacy.
i used 3 couch cushions, whipstitched so that they'd stay together, but I could fold and stack them. I bought the couch for $10 from Goodwill and just tossed the rest of it into their dumpster.
😂 My solos were good too but I can definitely still relate to a lot of these points lol I think anyone would be lying if they said it’s all sunshine & rainbows all the time when you’re living in a van for months on end
I prefer to do that. I live alone and so I don't do a lot of dishes. Makes no sense to put it into a expensive dishwasher (That I don't have) when I can clean it faster by hand and not have to come back to unload a dishwasher.
None of these seem like real serious problems, aside maybe from the breakdowns. All the others are just obvious parts of the lifestyle and honestly part of the charm to me.
I'm a full timer and can honestly say if you go into the nomad life properly, shedding modern comforts and learning to live a simple life, it can be amazing. You have to forgo many comforts but learn to find comforts in the simpler things. Like a bite of chocolate after nothing but beans, rice and foraged mushrooms for 2 week. Or finding a clean river to bathe in instead of washing over an enamel bowl. The whole Instagram, RUclips van life romanticism is ruining the lifestyle choice. Over here in the UK, we are having issues with new "van lifers" leaving waste everywhere and generally just being a pain in the arse. So much so our government have brought in new laws restricting overnight options.
This is an important video, van life is definitely not for everyone! I came here after seeing Gabby Petito’s van life video, I’ve been following that case very closely since the start and it’s heartbreaking stuff. Based on the style and some of the locations you showed in your video I think Gabby was a big fan of you guys and wanted something very similar to what you guys have. What you two have is very special, I hope you continue to enjoy your van life journeys!
This is awesome we were thinking about van life at first and most of these reasons are why we decided to get a travel trailer instead. We have been spending the past 6 months renovating our RV to ensure it is ready for full time, such as solar and wifi etc. We hit the road next week :0 Excited to see your 10 reasons why you should van life!
I've been on the road since October of last year in a small SUV, towing an enclosed motorcycle trailer. Plenty of room to sleep in either one and of course room for all my hiking, camping gear and motorcycle Etc I bought everything new and have no fears of mechanical breakdowns.
Hi Ana and Ian! Met you today at the Majestic Cafe. Looking at all your wonderful work. Looking forward to all the new work from Europe. Bruce & Jennifer James.
I'm starting on my 3rd year of vanlife (Ram Promaster High Top). This is definitely not for everybody. Most people prefer their physical and mental comfort zones . Sitting in a recliner, beer in one hand and remote in the other has its attractions, no doubt. Been there ,done that and off to work tomorrow. Now I'm free as a bird. Just spent 7 days at Lake Havasu, then 10 days outside Sedona. Last night Flagstaff and today it was the Petrified Forest Nat Park's turn .In two days I'll be in Albuquerque. I love it and one has to take the discomfort as part of the journey.
Wow, sounds like heaven! I'm a gypsy so I can handle the road, the good times & bad - its all part of the journey. :) Sedona and also Lake Tahoe - two of my all time fave places out there. My friend lives off grid in a "hippie commune-like" spot out near Sedona, soo nice & soo super chill, I was half tempted on staying! it was gorgeous, great ppl, mad fun. "May the road itself make your travels smooth & swift, and always resultful. May it host you in comfort, treat you like an old friend, until you reach your destination. Take Care, Safe Journeys to You." :)
Haa hell nahs for me. I’m not taking any discomforts. Van life is gonna be crazy cosy or I’m not doing it. This couple is nuts or should I just say bold and adventurous, but their expectations are small for for their van and their budget. Looks like a living hell on wheels.
I enjoyed every second of this video! Thanks sooo much for your candor. Getting used to discomforts prepares you for so many other challenges in life. Kudos to all of you for being willing to take it on!!
I've had AAA for years. We had a really bad experience with dispatch, and we cancelled our membership. Do your research. There are other brands that provide way better customer service. AAA has gotten too big to care.
There is nothing AAA offers that your insurance won't provide better and cheaper. They have an office in Orlando that is a palace, lobby has a arched glass roof, Italian marble, big planters with palm trees, very spacious, 20 foot heigh ceiling on first floor, balcony on the second overlooking the lobby. If you wonder where your dues go.
Honestly with only 2 major breakdown with a vehicle that’s over 180xxx miles that’s not bad at all! Maintenance prep is key especially before going on a 4months travel. Great video!:)
@@ian.and.ana. definitely but I guess if it’s in your budget and you guys are able to get a bigger newer van just make sure it’s Reliable do some research on it too, so as long as you guys are happy that’s all that counts!🙏
When it comes to laundry, wait what? Same vehicle, laundry talk, Utah and Jackson hole talk. Six months ago old video. I do think Gabby saw this video and loved it. I wonder if she commented on this video.
I see a lot of comments from people saying they dream of hearing the rain coming down on them in the car, I promise you its not like rain sounds in your house or coming from an app on your phone designed for sleep. When it's coming down hard on a metal roof in the middle of the night its LOUD bro, it's not the same as the relaxation app on your phone lmao.
Go backpacking, or at least get gear made for backpacking. The gear and food fit perfect. So many people try to simulate a house or apartment, especially if you have a small van. Great video!!!
I'm a former backpacker with ultra light gear. My van is a hard wall tent with it's only "build" being a bench that pulls out into a bed with stow space underneath.
Thank you for making this video - we see so few vids about the difficulties of van life. I remember just from camping experiences how much extra work is involved in every little thing you do. For me personally, my biggest concern about van life, even for a short-term trip, would be reliable, stable, continuous refrigeration for my insulin.
I would rather have a pickup truck with a camper. Living spaces and the vehicle are 2 completely separate thingsn it makes the camper feel like a home. Without carseats and the steering wheel and windows literally all around you. I never went anywhere. However my whole teenage years at my parents house i lived in a 1972 Davlin camper instead of ny actual room. It was so much fun.
Really enjoyed the video and loved your brut honesty mixed with humor. I don't find van life over glamourized at all; just everyone has their own experiences; tolerances and expectancies.
Great video, made it much more interesting that you compared a small van with a larger one. Both couples were great at letting each of you tell stories. The only thing I thought you should consider talking more about is the intimacy issues of living so close together. I will assume both couples got along well with each other. If that is true, try to express it during some of the experiences and especially at the end. End the last comparison with at least each couple giving each other a big long hug.....then wave goodbye!
I’m impressed by the way you guys endured 4 months in that tight van, I own a Promaster 159” like your friends, it’s the only way to go. But me like you I built with a lot of miles on originally and now have had breakdowns. Buy new or newer!
You said “budget van” but when I think of a budget van I think of a 1,000$ Dodge Ram van from the 90s or something like that. Side note: older cars not only are cheaper but can be worked on easily by yourself or any craigslist Joe mechanic.
Just happened onto this great video. Enjoy most all of your other adventuring videos... where this one adds the refreshing honesty of the total picture of your adventuring videos. Appreciate your honest information... so that like myself... others who are excited to get out there and enjoy the road trip adventures will not be disappointingly surprised. I was home from Vietnam and had saved up some cash to blow on a whirlwind trip of America after my time in the Army. This was 1969 and after sleeping on the ground as an infantry soldier in Vietnam sleeping in my car was a luxury. Back in those days you could pull in to a rest area and sleep in the car. Traveled most of the western states over a years time and than returned home to adjust to a work life again. Was well worth the time and experience.
I lived in a van at a ski resort working as a liftee, and it got down to negative 15 degrees fahrenheit some nights, but I was ok, never got cold, the van had insulated walls and I had a zero degree sleeping bag under a heavy comforter. I used to use the hot tubs after dinner or before bed too. Also I always get cold feet, and cant sleep with cold feet, so I had a couple boxes of hot hands hand warmers that last for 8 hours and wore them between the 2 layers of socks. no biggie.
I am so glad you discussed the used versus new van concept. I am stubborn and am willing to pay a higher amount for a new van so I know what warranties I have and can put the miles on myself. Lots of people are pushing me to just buy a used van, but I would rather know myself where the van has been and what accidents have occurred, especially since my first car was used and had problems. Good luck with buying a new van when the time is right for you.
I don’t think it’s being stubborn to buy a new van! We did what we could with the sort of money we were working with at the beginning of our journey. Now I think we want to buy a new van because from the beginning you take care of it
I’ve watched a few of these van life people and being a Gen X I’ve concluded that nothing is more inane than watching people reinvent the wheel. It’s called camping and we’ve been doing it for years. Only difference; you wouldn’t catch us ‘camping’ at Walmart. FFS the stuff people will watch. And here I was thinking I was going to see SOMETHING.
"Vanlifers" aint got sh*t, except expensive kitchens with an attached bed that will break down within 3 years from being insanely overweight and stressing out their transmissions.
I have watched a lot of van life, skoolie videos. Thank you for doing this video. The things you mention are the real deal. Some of those problems can be taken care of with efficient designs. Organization. Screen material. I have heard many suggest renting an rv prior to committing to the nomad lifestyle. Make sure it is for you.
Van life? People have been doing this with all sorts of vehicles for how many years? Hilarious listening to young people while they reinvent the wheel. It's a given, when you live outside the comforts of a real home, you have to be much more resourceful, frugal and compromising. I would bet most of these kids were raised in middle class or affluent environments and were fortunate enough to never experience real poverty, deprivation or hunger.
I mean I see more successful van life attempts than unsuccessful. Perhaps my search is bias. Your logic is a little flawed, assuming your over 40, your generation reinvented the wheel all the same. You can go as far back as traveling caravans…. People improve and modify old ideas to create. I’m 27, I’ve worked on fishing boats, landscaping, I’ve made pizza for a living, and I’m currently working on my third year as an electrician. Annddd there are plenty more young people like me. It’s been my experience that we are less proud about it. It’s just work, we expect to work… it was previous generations that started this economic snowball shitstorm, previous generations that ruined the environment without any consideration for long term effects… previous generations that feel entitled to the property that they inherited but somehow “worked their ass off” for…. My generation dealt with your bankrupt ass not being to provide shit, nothing to inherit because you gave it to the bank. So I live simply and humbly enjoy the good things in life, meeting new people, trying new foods, and absorbing the atmosphere in the most rural places I can find. I bet you would bitch and moan just like this trust fund baby minority group.
@@pneuma6202 you think that describes these two? No. In the early 70's, we would've called them flower children. This was not poverty. She quit her job to do this. She was a self proclaimed "nutritionist" working in an organic juice bar. If they were struggling it was there choice.
This only cleared my mind about getting the right van size. I’m planing to built one with my Dad and all these videos definitely help to clear out some questions. Thanks!
You two couples are cute together! I love the back and forth points of view. Y’all should do this all the time. Great video! Thx. Safe travels!! Also does the other couple have a channel?
Lmao, I agree with your points, thanks for being honest. Though they can be mitigated with lots of $$$$$. The only one I have had a hard time is extreme hot weather. We rarely ever use public bathrooms for #2 and we made our toilet ourselves. Happy travels!
Thank you for these honest comments on van life. Since more people are trying this life, honesty and useful advice is VERY important. I wonder if spaces, other than large parking lots, can be rented to vans per vans parked, at a reasonable rate. This would be an excellent way for landowners to make extra money on empty land.
up here in NH / ME there was some news about the politicians were going to make it easier for homeowners to build a tiny home or two on their properties to address affordable housing / incomes. IT's amazing how UN-free America is.
It's always good to have both sides, the positives and negatives of van life. I appreciate this video as much as I appreciate the positive videos of van life.

Gel earplugs - Resistor 32 50-pack of the orange ones so you can find them. When it stops squishing, get a new pair. Also blublox REMedy Sleep Masks allows you to blink in complete darkness. I bought two and love them

11. Trying so hard to be cool and trendy when you’d be so much happier just being yourselves. Adding a exhaust fan to your van/tiny home dramatically decreases smells. People always add an fan to blow air in to keep their space cool. Yet always fail to add an exhaust fan to suck air out. My exhaust fan is two 4" suction fans pulling air out through the roof, and the roof has a 1/2" lip with a smoke stack type cover to keep rain fall from coming in.
Ahahah! Well that's great! A great easy way to feel better about your life! I found your comment funny because you must be one of very few that watch these videos for the opposite purpose: most of the viewers are trying to escape their apartments. 😆
When I went from my little Chevy G20 campervan to a 27' travel trailer with queen sized bed in a master bedroom, a slide out living room, full kitchen, full-sized bathroom, 2 big screen TVs with surround sound all pulled by my diesel F250 - there was NO LOOKING BACK!
I may have a unpopular opinion but I think to full time van life a bathroom is a must. You wouldn’t get a house with no bathroom. Now I know yours was just a trip but peeing all over the parking lot at Walmart is a bit nasty especially during a pandemic. Although I understand why .. u gotta go you gotta go.. but if you are embarrassed to do it you prob should find a gas station. Usually casinos will let you park for free and gas stations are usually near by. Also porto potties are easy to lug around. All I’m saying is consider the people who shop there.. other than that cute video and valid points!

Dude. Same. Minivan with a mattress, some pillows, water jugs and a trusty pee jar and I am good to go, and I'm a female. Life's good
@@Madison-ws9cc ya I think I need to go back to that life was so easy lol 😆
That's what me and my bf are going to do lmao
i used 3 couch cushions, whipstitched so that they'd stay together, but I could fold and stack them. I bought the couch for $10 from Goodwill and just tossed the rest of it into their dumpster.
It only sucks because they live together, all my solos we are good!
Exactly
Their van is too small for two.
😂 My solos were good too but I can definitely still relate to a lot of these points lol I think anyone would be lying if they said it’s all sunshine & rainbows all the time when you’re living in a van for months on end
Double side doors would be essential especially for night pees!
🎶She can eat crackers in my bed anytime..
Lol “ had to clean the dishes by hand 😱 “
I prefer to do that. I live alone and so I don't do a lot of dishes. Makes no sense to put it into a expensive dishwasher (That I don't have) when I can clean it faster by hand and not have to come back to unload a dishwasher.
@@nickgennady -if u had a dishwasher, don't take all the dishes out of the dish washer altogether, take just what u need to eat and leave the rest.😁😁
Even then, there are small dishwashers than can fit under most of the sinks you see in these vans lmao.
Been doing dishes by hand since damn day one!
Don’t you just love these glamping fools? 😂😂😂😂😩😩😩😭😭😭
None of these seem like real serious problems, aside maybe from the breakdowns. All the others are just obvious parts of the lifestyle and honestly part of the charm to me.
The water really got me. “You have to fill up this water or you die” like no shit Sherlock
Ow no that don’t have 4g 24/7
Well they should have thought twice before they bought a high milage ford then maybe they wouldn't have kept breaking down Lol
Lmao agreed
This is an important video, van life is definitely not for everyone! I came here after seeing Gabby Petito’s van life video, I’ve been following that case very closely since the start and it’s heartbreaking stuff.
Based on the style and some of the locations you showed in your video I think Gabby was a big fan of you guys and wanted something very similar to what you guys have.
What you two have is very special, I hope you continue to enjoy your van life journeys!
Yeah! And don’t kill each other! 😬😵💫
That’s a pretty awesome choice!! Excited for you guys WOOT WOOT!

Good Luck & Safe Journeys to You! :)
I've been on the road since October of last year in a small SUV, towing an enclosed motorcycle trailer. Plenty of room to sleep in either one and of course room for all my hiking, camping gear and motorcycle Etc I bought everything new and have no fears of mechanical breakdowns.
"Most people doing Vanlife won't have to worry about this, but we broke down twice." Was funny hearing that as a Vanagon owner 😂 twice sounds ideal
Couldn’t be a more true statement! “One has to take the discomfort as part of the journey”
You're doing it right Joe. Good for you! When hiking the Appalachian Trail they had a saying - "Embrace the Suck".
Wow, sounds like heaven! I'm a gypsy so I can handle the road, the good times & bad - its all part of the journey. :)
Sedona and also Lake Tahoe - two of my all time fave places out there.
Looks like a living hell on wheels.
but you can have recliner remote an dbeer in van
i love how you guys are so honest, thankyou, great video, cheers from Australia
So pumped we could help in anyway ♥️♥️
My wife and I are enjoying this, watching our second "the other side" post. You're already feeling like family. Please keep them coming
This really means a ton!! We are excited to keep bringing you guys on our adventures
AAA is a ripoff
They had a policy during COVID that they couldn't give you a ride, only tow your car. I cancelled after that.
I'm so happy with vanlife. I suppose I'll face more challenges this winter but the spring, summer and fall have been so amazing!
That’s why I’m planning on buying a new Ford Connect. I’m almost 80 and I don’t want to break down somewhere.
Honestly with only 2 major breakdown with a vehicle that’s over 180xxx miles that’s not bad at all! Maintenance prep is key especially before going on a 4months travel. Great video!:)
I know we got super lucky with our WOOT WOOT mobile!!
I would recommend a Shower tent. it's only 20$ Cheers! Bigger Van is a plus for 2 people.
We bought one for our upcoming road trip!!
For #6 WiFi, have you looked into using Starlink? Wondering how that works on the road.
Outstanding! Your realistic but optimistic look at Vanlife scares me, yet I am inspired! Thank you!
Hahaha happy you enjoyed it! Just telling it how it is WOOT WOOT
The two of you are great! Keep going and more importantly stay together!
Aww thanks Stephen!! Haha idk if anyone or anything could ever tear us apart. We have been through it all
I would rather have a pickup truck with a camper.
You said it friend but this is for stealth people
Really enjoyed the video and loved your brut honesty mixed with humor. I don't find van life over glamourized at all; just everyone has their own experiences; tolerances and expectancies.
Thanks for speaking ur truths , obviously u will hit a few bumps in the road but it’s nice to hear “real life stuff “

Serial killers are def a worry ahah
Also land sharks. You never know. ;)

Never buy new unless you want to lose all equity in vehicle almost immediately….. buy used with 30-60 thousand miles lol
Awesome meeting you both in Yosemite today and thanks for showing us your van. Super cool!
You said “budget van” but when I think of a budget van I think of a 1,000$ Dodge Ram van from the 90s or something like that. Side note: older cars not only are cheaper but can be worked on easily by yourself or any craigslist Joe mechanic.

Good stuff and good advice for getting AAA card. I've had one since 1996 and would never go on a trip without my AAA card
I have a 2011 ford connect with 429,000 miles one transmission 2 sets of axles and carrier bearings and it runs like new! Love it
Wow that makes us so happy!! We love our WOOT WOOT Mobile
From prison to homeless to saving up to buy my 95 chevy G20 travel van .. I will always choose and be grateful to this van.. AMEN
Good for you. You're doing good.
Also I always get cold feet, and cant sleep with cold feet, so I had a couple boxes of hot hands hand warmers that last for 8 hours and wore them between the 2 layers of socks. no biggie.
Appreciate the upload of your content and your honesty!
So happy you enjoyed Rob!! Thanks so much for leaving a nice comment
Van life is something you have to do to; be thankful for a nice van when faced with homelessness.
Omg I totes tried to post a pic of me doing my yoga on the van roof at sunset and I only had like one bar 😣
Now I think we want to buy a new van because from the beginning you take care of it
Very Honest, Much Real. You people pointed to the annoying things, that are not easy to imagine in the initial excitement of Van Life.
love it 😆 tell it like it is! You guys definitely inspire me to live the van life and go road tripping. Thanks for the vid 👍
So happy you enjoyed this one!! Haha lots of downsides but way more ups
Great advice. Thanks! AAA is a definitely a must!
Happy the video helped Mike!! AAA is a lifesaver
Great video and good overview. Love your Van life essentials. Also AAA. Cool !! All the best.
The Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie case brought me here.
Mark L ok boomer
Exactly.

One general rule regarding breakdowns - The larger the motor, the longer they last. Generally.
Gel earplugs - Resistor 32 50-pack of the orange ones so you can find them. When it stops squishing, get a new pair. Also blublox REMedy Sleep Masks allows you to blink in complete darkness. I bought two and love them

We totally agree with this comment!
