Definitely not Juliette’s first film role, but it did earn her her first (and only) Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. Personal fact; Juliette personally signed my copy of Cape Fear when I met her in Amsterdam a few years ago
Ah yes. My favourite bit is when Bart runs to one end of the boat ready to jump and sees an alligator, so he runs to the other end and says something equally nasty (I forget what it was.... piranhas?), so he runs back to the other end, sees the alligator again and says "Oh yeah".
Waking up and seeing this as the new review was a pleasent surprise. This is a review that I'll definitely be rewatching, good movie with great commentary from you guys. Hearing you guys gush about this is reason why I love this channel. You guys review all types of movies and we get different tones of reviews as well because of it. Keep it up
Idk. I'd day "deserved". His last 15 years have really hurt his legacy. Like when Pacino starred in Jack and Jill with Sandler. But while Pacino learned his lesson, De Niro signed up for Bad Grandpa to pay for a failing Tribeca restaurant and alimony. It really is a bummer, because you're totally right about being on top for 20 years. But everything after Meet The Parente just gets progressively more cringe with every new bad movie of his.
@@MrEmperorApples You're completely right I misspoke. He was only on top for a while , he stopped giving af about acting when he started doing those trash movies you mentioned. I think Pacino actually fell off around when he did that oceans movie lol pretty bad.
Happy Thanksgiving fellas. Its 1:30 am here. Just finished doing all my desserts for tomorrow, sitting down to burn a j and fall asleep and I get a video to watch. Thanks as always
Awesome review of this classic guys! 👊 Great cameos by the original cast, the reuse of Bernard Herrman's iconic score and titles done by Saul Bass all point to a great respect of the original 1962 film and it's Hictchockian influences. Fun fact: The Prince Charles Cinema still uses that cinema sequence before films as a guide for cinema etiquette - "Love film? Don't be like Max Cady" 😂
My dad passed away 10 years ago but before he did he asked me to watch this movie. I was about 17 years old I had no idea what I was getting myself into. But it was the best f****** movie ever seen
Awesome review! One of my favorite Juliet Lewis movies that came out was National Lampoon‘s Christmas vacation which came out a couple of years before Cape. Fear! This is one of my favorite movies, because it also stars the original, Max, Katie and Sam Boden from the original movie! It’s funny how the original Sam Boden is protecting Max, Katie! And the original Max Katie was helping McNulty, Sam Boden in the scene where Sam Boden is picking out Max, Katie! When the original Max Katie plays a lieutenant in this movie!
Well done guys - great review you were on point with this one, its a classic that surpasses the original (and also) great classic. It was such a smart and nice touch to have the original leads on the opposing sides and also bringing back Martin Balsam as the judge who played the same role in the original. Because of the success of this remake I half expected a redo Night of the Hunter as well.
This is a very good movie, both as a remake (one of the best remakes) & as a stand alone. A intense view to say the least. Well acted by all involved, especially De Niro (as always)..."Max Cady" is a phenomenal villain. The storms represent his character as a "force of nature". I'm a fan Scorsese's career work. The cinematography only adds to the tension of this "horror movie". Yes this 'gem" is a horror movie! The original 1962 is quite good as well, the novel is a definite read for fans.
Nice review as always. When I saw the thumbnail I was shocked that I had missed this review from the library and it was only after I finished watching it that I saw you had just posted it.
I try and post when I can and hope that it encourages new viewers to stay and explore your channel. Always great points and you explore every genre, from budget to blockbuster, old and new. I save a lot of your videos as workout videos and only recently watched 'Zodiac' Iain!!! I have found a new sense of kinship with you... I LOVE the fact that you like Alien 3. I love it too and it always gets a rough deal.
Another great video guys Nick Nolte is under appreciated due to his troubles, but he’s had some great roles. One of my favourite is Blue Chips; excellent movie and he plays the part perfectly
I prefer the original version with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum. Robert Mitchum exuded malice without the overt violence portrayed by Robert DeNiro. Also Gregory Peck is one of my favorite actors. 😊😊😊
A great great film. Max Cady is a scary man. De Niro nailed this role. Oh and Ileana Douglas was in a relationship with Scorsese at this point in their lives too
Honestly, I thought that was Milos from “A Serbian Film” on Ian’s t-shirt 😂😂😂😂. Honestly, I would love to see them review and rant on “A Serbian Film.”
Great review guys this makes me want to watch it as well as the original nice one and thank you Iain for also mentioning Nick Nolte being in Ang Lee's Hulk. It's an under appreciated flick, I really love film too.
Good Review as always but this is not Juliette Lewis's first movie, she was in five other films before Cape Fear (1991) one of which was National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989). ;) (Although maybe her part may have been filmed before those other films...just basing my comment on IMDb release dates.)
Great film, great review!.... But I'm not sure where Gary got his info that it's Juliette Lewis's first movie; she was in five movies prior including My Stepmother Is* An Alien and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.
Another great reaction/review, guys. I hope you don’t mind a new request and this one is left field a bit - would you both consider watching the under mentioned 1986 movie called “The Boy Who Could Fly” written and directed by Nick Castle, who is best known for playing Michael Myers in the original Halloween movie?
I always thought "the last stare" meant... Let me put an answer from 007 movie Skyfall "Look upon your work Mother". That was stare of a man who demanded justice but also a man who telling throught that stare that all could end diferently only if you wouldn't set me up.
Not really sure Max is going to "Heaven." Probably "South of Heaven" IMO. Thank you for the review, but this movie is so FUCKING UNCOMFORTABLE to watch. I have watched it once in my life; while I have watched Taxi Driver a lot of times. Just makes you feel dirty in a way that other Scorsese films do not make you feel. Travis Bickle is a fucking saint in that movie compared to this, or Neil McCauley in Heat (DeNiro is kind of psycho for starting a gunfight with many innocents around, but he is still in control, unlike in Cape Fear where he is NOT in control of his emotions). The review was enough for me to understand this isn't one I am going to revisit, so thanks for that.
I didn't take to this film like I hoped. I just didn't like any of the characters, despite the acting and direction being solid. Maybe it's because The Simpsons did it better, and in 22 minutes!
Full stoner but, does anyone remember when Gary had a spot and Ian had a little Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers style 😯👉, that was funny as... what episode was that?

A quality remake with a great cast, great direction, great music, just everything!
The Simpsons use of this in a episode with Sideshow Bob as De Niro’s character was just sublime. Ah, remember when Simpsons was good
Ah yes. My favourite bit is when Bart runs to one end of the boat ready to jump and sees an alligator, so he runs to the other end and says something equally nasty (I forget what it was.... piranhas?), so he runs back to the other end, sees the alligator again and says "Oh yeah".

De Niro is one of those acclaimed actors who deserves the hype. He was killing it for like 20 years.
Idk. I'd day "deserved". His last 15 years have really hurt his legacy. Like when Pacino starred in Jack and Jill with Sandler. Indeed one of the best of Scorsese, with great visuals, a great soundtrack, and great performances, all those elements are what makes it so intense.

They're both great,
like with The Wages of Fear (1953) and William Freidkin's remake: Sorcerer (1977)
A great great film. Max Cady is a scary man. De Niro nailed this role. Oh and Ileana Douglas was in a relationship with Scorsese at this point in their lives too
In her book, Alicia Witt says she was up for the role that Juliet Lewis ended up getting; definitely would’ve been a different movie
This channel is great. It's like red letter media for people who aren't cynical and dead inside
Like ice cream, you can enjoy different flavours.
Aww, I thought Iain, you were going to go with the 'are you offering me something hot?' line of Cady's 😄
What you opted for was cool as well though 👌😊
Great film, great review. Another example of De Niro displaying the great range so many people say he didn't have.
My favourite movie channel along side the boys from Redlettermedia 🎬
Great review brothers and that script swap fact was crazy! Thank-you both.

Awesome! I think Max Cady is Robert De Niro's most evil character, and he's played some pretty bad people!
Have a good one, Shelfers! 👊👊👊

Actually Juliette Lewises first major role was as Audrey Griswald in Lampoon's Christmas Vacation in 1989 two years before this film.
I'll go with Gary on this one
@@oldrestless I suppose though this was Juliette Lewises first BIG major role though so ok yeah .
It's a great remake which is a quite rare occurrence...most are barely cold before they're dug up n desecrated...

Another insightful Off the Shelf review of a great movie.
Thanks for the Review.
Juliette Lewis was in Christmas Vacation at least 2 or 3 years before Cape Fear. Definitely wasn't her first film
Literally watched this 2 days ago. Love it.
The score
The one line I remember: I don't know whether to look at him, or read him.
9:15 The rotoscoping around his hair to add the stormy clouds is pretty rough, especially the left side.
Good catch. We will pass that along to the compositors surely they will go back in and fix it. lol
Thanks guys.
Awesome Hitchcockian thriller.
Personally, I think it's unintentionally hilarious. So overwrought and campy. But it's definitely highly entertaining.
Never really warmed up to this one - i tried twice! Juliette Lewis was great though, she is just so underrated - still! 🙂

It's crazy that I just realized the houseboat is called Moana.

Juliette Lewis sure has seen some creepy stuff. Also think about her roles in from dusk til dawn and natural born killers
Check her out in Kalifornia if you have not already.

Pretty decent movie but not as good as they say.
They are easily impressed. Never put much too much stock in the They.
