Late war orders were to sink the escorts if able. They were in a short supply.
Just started a Gar career myself, out of Midway, with orders to patrol Area 5. Getting my Uboat and Silent Hunter keys mixed up 🙂. Have to watch out for those teeny islands when time accelerating across the Pacific.

Those two freighters may of been warned about a sub in the areas. They may have been dedicated to spotting you or any sub. If they can spot you or your torps they will speed up and slow down and do random course changes to gum up any sub tracking them.

I've been really wanting to play SH4 with the same mods you have installed. I have absolutely no clue however on how to install the mods. I would love a vid where you explain how to install the mods.
:D Always get nervous when you’re close and acquiring data & making calculations with the periscope up for long periods. Memories of always playing hide & seek with the periscope as they kept spotting it.
That gets my sub fix for the week. Taff in Exile got shredded by DD's in an attempt to execute a long-range attack on a CV.

Great video! The editing and videography really is top-notch every time. Have you ever had time to visit some of the museum ships? I was lucky enough to get a couple weekends volunteering on the SS Jeremiah Obrien, a Liberty ship in San Francisco near Fisherman's Wharf. What really surprised me is how the engine room is open across the whole ship, there is no subdivision there at all. A single torpedo hit on the engine room would flood out the whole thing, extinguish both boilers and render the main engine and all the auxiliary equipment (pumps, generators, etc) inaccessible and unusable. I imagine the same would be true for just about any other merchant ship or cargo ship. Warships tend to have more subdivision, with separate engine rooms and fire/boiler rooms (often two or more boiler rooms and two or more engine rooms) so a single hit doesn't disable everything. Since the funnel must be above the fire room/boiler room, and the engine room must be adjacent to the boilers (usually just aft, but sometimes just forward), you can be more sure of a kill if you aim for the funnels.
I'm gonna try SH4 while I'm out on my next patrol and see how I do. I've never played any of the SH games before, so it'll be interesting.
I really hope you continue to make these and SH3, they are pure entertainment

Question: wouldn't be better to fire first at the farthest target? This way counting the time that it takes to aim and the travel time the two (or more) sets of torpedoes should arrive roughly at the same time

After Watching you play Steel Division 2 with MHV I was thinking that one of the Campaigns would be a good series to do. I would suggest one of the shorter campaigns like Bobirusk as the Soviets.
They might the Japanese version of Q-Ships
So I've been watching a ton of your sub sim videos for SH4 and Cold Waters, and seen a few on other channels, and it struck me that these games could really use better damage modelling. Like, surely you should have snapped the keel of a few of these cargo ships right? Another guy who I watched SH4 game play of sunk a Yamato class battleship the 'traditional way', which is to say putting torpedoes into one side till she capsized. When she rolled into the water, her turrets didn't fall out of her barbettes, like they would have when Musashi rolled over. Magazine explosions, ships burning practically to the water line before the waves finally claim them, the occasional beyond huge chain reaction like Hood. Would really add to the games a bit. For me at least. I wonder if there's mods for that?
Hopefully there's a mod to get SH4 working more readily. I hear it doesn't without jumping through some serious hoops and I really want to play!

I bought silent hunter 3,4 and 5. I bought silent hunter 5 on hard copy it didnt work then i bought 3 and 4 on steam, 3 whent black screen but the audio was fine and 4 flat out didn't start. Now im getting 3 and 4 hard copies and 5 on steam. Fingers crossed they work. I've been desperate to play these games from my fond memories. My pc has a ryzen 7 processor and a RTX 3060 . I dont know whats going on, i just want to play them in vanilla.

I must admit this serie is pretty boring because of the lack of enemy or story. i mean the atlantic one you had atleast the 24/7 stress of the enemy superity. do a serie where u start with a little coast u boat and slowly work you way up. also less one 20 mins per episode is for a u boat sim. pretty short because the life of a u boat captain (looking at historical accuracy wich u also love) it is waiting searching and managin your crew. i was stunned from the pld u boat narratives of yours. please this is just a critic and i still love your vids but i am not anymore thrilled. (i subbed while u had less than 5k) have a wonderful evening, weekend and dont forget your 6th booster vaccine:D greetings from cologne germany^^
This is not a shoot em up arcade game, it's a simulation of real life WW2 submarine warfare. As such, some times it might be exciting or terrifying or it might be uneventful and boring. You might be more interested in one of those first person shooter games, blasting your way through hordes of hungry zombies.

I want to see the part there he just padles around the ocean while giving the Boot the narrative wich he is very good in. I mean the last episode there litaerlly just 1 min sailing after that 2 merchant sunk them with deck guns or topedos.
It has to be said, compared to the U-boats of the same time period, the American subs had it far easier. They had radar earlier than the U-boats, and better radar as well. Plus the Japanese ASW was far less effective than the British due to lack of radar.
