  • After checking in at Wild Rescue, I was told about the tortoise rescue operation they had on the reserve and the other exciting projects they have at Wild Rescue, like the vervet monkey enclosure they have just completed. I was able to come to the aid of a tortoise myself while being there! I hope you enjoy this episode. #dustbugs #travel #southafrica #offroad #tortoise #adventure #dustbugstravel #dustbugsadventure

    I'm glad you helped the poor tortoise. That one is quite old already. And the owl...wow. Walking out in the bush and veld does so much for the soul. I like to just sit and listen. The silence is beautiful.

      That is so true. Just to sit and listen to nature is amazing.

    You were very privileged to see an owl in the wild. I've seen one in Constantia many years ago - very amusing event that day. I was with friends and we saw him in the tree few moments earlier. One of my friends had a labrador with him. The dog got separated briefly as dogs are want to do. The owl swooped down and flew slow close and so quietly above the dogs head, he knew nothing about what happened. Must have felt the wind only. The poor guy looked very confused.
    Then also a not so good sighting after dark up the west coast. Other times too, but those were the best. Yours there must rank up there as a great sighting.

    The flat growing plants are either Haemanthus deformis or Massonia depressa.

      Thank you, it was fantastic to spend time in the presence of the wildlife on this farm. 🐢🦉

    This poor guy was probably in a fight. They try and turn each other over. Thanks for helping him! I know the plants you are thinking about in Namibia. They are the Welwitschia. A very ancient plant with huge power of survival. Maybe the plants you re looking at now are the Tsamma melon? The owl looks like an Eagle owl. Beautiful!

      I just couldn't leave him like that, but one of the farm workers explained later that they eventually are able to turn themselves back around. 🐢 This was also a special stay for us with so much wild and birdlife around. 🤩

    I wonder how that tortoise landed upside down? Perhaps attempting to mount a female and she spurned him or another male knocked him off in a pique of jealousy? The ground seemed quite level and sandy. So glad you were there to rescue him.

      The females were kept separately from the males, so I imagine your latter explanation would make more sense. I just couldn't leave him on his back like that! 😁🐢

    Ane here I was typing...you better beware of snakes up there....and here at the end they told you so...but I suppose in the height of summer you probably would have seen some. Always take a kierie along! 🙂

      I'll remember that in the future! Actually I didn't see any snakes on this short hike. If I did, it would've been even shorter! 🤣🐍

      I think they push each other and they're quite strong. I always feel so sorry for them when they've overturned. 😨🐢

    Or maybe Those SHELLS worth lot of Money.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  Год назад +1

      I think perhaps 150 or so years ago they may have been worth serious money because they used them to make combs and other items, but nowadays plastic has replaced it. And it's certainly not worth killing these innocent animals for their shells. 😥

    Why people keep those? Is there anything worth money in those, like people Keep Rhinos for their Horns that sort of thing.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  Год назад

      I don't think it's worth any money. When people walk in the veld and they pick one up, they keep it because it's pretty to look at. 🐢
