I really enjoy watching these videos, because even if you lose, I still feel like I'm learning something, especially how you deliberate through what kind of outs the opponent could have, what the best card to discard is, etc.
I loved how you didn't disrespect your second opponent even though his deck was a dumpster fire, just went through the motions and did what you needed to do. Other people in your position would have made pretty distasteful comments about it. Stay classy, Reid.
reid great video i was thinking of biulding this or jund shadow and the way you explain your plays is like no other mtg player huge fan keep up the good work
Great publicity you make! Even though i don´t play MtG, i find myself planing to buy a Seize, a Push and Inquisiton for month till i have the playset ^^
the one argument to keep kcommand in is that every single early card feels important for shift decks. In the various forms I've played scapeshift over the years I've always wanted all my cards early and it's very rare that even a single discard didn't feel like it had completely ruined my plan (nevermind if I had to mull). Even a single discard of my choice (lilli / kcommand) feels like a wrench is tightening around your chances to win. You feel like you're in top deck mode long before you are literally in top deck mode.
Can someone please explain the Death Shadow and Grim Flayer trample damage interaction? if you control a creature with trample can you assign as much damage as you want to the player or do you have to deal lethal to the blocker first? is Shadow like Goyf in the sense that it gains the power and toughness before the damage is accounted for on it? (Kind of like how Goyf at 2/3 can survive a bolt with no instant in the yard.)
You can choose to deal all the damage to blocking creature if you want to really kill the death's shadow, but if you only deal "lethal" damage and trample the rest then death's shadow will survive because it will grow large simultaneously as you lose live (as the damage is dealt).
ok. and you aren't allowed to assign zero damage to death's shadow right? it has to be at least lethal at the time damage is assigned? and if this is true say damage is assigned and GF is due to trample over for 1 then the defending player cracks a fetch and grows their death shadow with trample damage still happen and the death shadow survive or will the last point be assigned to the death shadow?
You have to assign lethal damage with first before you can trample over. As for your other question, it is too late to respond after damage has been assigned. You can still respond after they decide the ordering of damage to blockers, but once the actual damage numbers have been assigned there's no spot where anyone has priority before the damage actually happens.
I think that first strike damage is assigned, and then after that damage each player gets priority again, then the same thing happens with regular damage, and then technically there's last strike damage if you're playing with unstable cards. End result, the grim flayer only applies it's damage, and so the amount of trample damage is decided, after first strike damage happens.
Would have taken a more aggresive line in Match 4 Game 3. Dissmember and Bolt Finks at End Step. Untap, play shadow, with that play you even have enough cards in the yard for Tas (of course you can't know you draw him). But End up with 3 Creatures in play and dual stub up, even 2 creatures in play and dual stub up sounds fine to me. Reid ended up basically in the same position a turn later with 5 less damage dealt to his opponent.
I was thinking about that line myself. The opponent would have to decide between Siege Rhino or the Decay, so the life totals would have been a bit different. Another key decision, this time in Match 5, was not to Denial the Lingering Souls. Sure, the opponent could have wanted to bait the Denial to cast Path, but at that point you want to finish the games as soon as you can. The opponent plays Souls, Rhino and other cards which are just difficult for GDS to deal with. That line cost him several turns worth of damage, which than gave the opponent enough time to play Scooze and eventually take the match.
r2g1 I suppose it's somewhat reasonable to expect lightning helix out of the rw prison decks, but bolt is a bit off the beaten path (as well as maindeck leyline) because the the stock lists play chalice. 1:30:40 don't think that leaving up 2 stubs is necessary since it doesn't seem like the opponent can cast 2 spells in a turn.
Something I've considered with this grixis shadow deck is to run 1 mana confluence - it can drop your life total to pump shadow and taps for all 3 colors... it isn't fetchable but you can usually find all three colors easily enough. would that be a reasonable consideration over the 2nd blood crypt?
Any thought to keeping the terminate and discarding Liliana in that last game? Maelstrom Pulse was the thing most likely to fuck you, so terminate your own death's shadow to keep one shadow to kill their Liliana. You were clear about just wanting one of them to live to deal with their lili, so I dunno it's something I was thinking about and then we see the pulse and with that knowledge of course it's the better play. But behind the curtain did you already rule it out? About 1:57:03
No, Etron is still around but GDS is still a good deck. That and 4c shadow and mono green tron have started coming up in the metagame, so has jeskai control and more recently 5c humans. Jund and abzan are still a thing, RW burn and affinity are still around, and lantern control shows up from time to time. Oh, also scapeshift is still around a lot, it just won a gp.
Not exactly? I mean every deck ahas its good matchup and bad matchups, I think it's pretty healthy compared to standard which is more of a rock paper scissors format
That first round against titan shift just further proves why big mana decks are terrible for modern’s health. The big mana decks like tron and valakut are too consistent and punish players for playing interaction.
? Didn't have the mana up for it There are no lines he could have taken after turn ~3 to save himself IMO you shouldn't fetch untapped shocks against valakut
Any time I think I'm good at Magic I come watch a league with Reid to humble myself 😂.

Same old song and dance: Reid Duke = instant Like

@@robspear03 wasn't as competitive as Reid's deck
You’re the best player to watch! I love your analysis! Can’t wait for you’re next one!
reid great video i was thinking of biulding this or jund shadow and the way you explain your plays is like no other mtg player huge fan keep up the good work
I love casting street wraiths for their alternate casting cost of 3 and two black.
Reid's cat is the mvp of this video.
When using thoughtseize can you enlarge their hand i can never see it
Awesome video. I love how you go in the tank at the very first choice of the game :D
Nice to see Channel Fireball doing deck techs on these relatively unknown rogue decklists
Reid is so freaking good, it is amazing
The description should say "Reid" his guide to black midrange.
I have a question on snapcasters ruling, if i flash snapcaster does his flashback ability resolve?
This format is great.
Great publicity you make! Even though i don´t play MtG, i find myself planing to buy a Seize, a Push and Inquisiton for month till i have the playset ^^
Its a great game... though you should start with a less expensive deck in my opinion lol
Love your videos!
Modo needs more players like Sentiment.
Agreed my friend! Life in general needs more people with the class of Sentiment & Reid Duke.

MountieBeaver42 what if there is a1/1 first striker that deals damage to defending player first?

I have played so many matches like that first one against titanshift
Haven't played Modern in a while. Did Eldrazi Tron go down and now Death Shadow is #1 again?

R E I D ! My boi!
game 2 against the through the breach deck, why not use stubborn denial to counter chalice of the void?
He didn't have the mana because he tapped out to play Tasigur
oh whoops haha i'm high
Why didn't you countersquall the Summoner's Pact in R1G2?
? Didn't have the mana up for it
There are no lines he could have taken after turn ~3 to save himself
IMO you shouldn't fetch untapped shocks against valakut
At 1:45:12 why didn't you counter the ooze?
non creature spell
Comment
Modern is such a strange format. Best deck in meta is milling your own deck and killing yourself to play 3/3. I'll stay with legacy.
hows that workin for ya now, UB shadow is FotM
Privilege Checker month later and still arguably best Delver deck in legacy
