I own numerous GPD products and will continue to (go Win Max series and Win Min). However, while I am thrilled for buyers that there is a solution to this there should bever be a situation where a consumer should be required to do this for a fix (or send their unit back to China and have no unit for who knows how long). Very unfortunate.
The “Native” orientation of the screen matters because of the sub pixel layout will be rotated 90deg to what windows is expecting, this will make things that use sub pixel rendering like Clear type rendering incorrectly and make text look fuzzy. Now this (probably) does not really matter on a 6” 1080p screen mainly used for gaming as it’s not noticeable but would be unacceptable on say a regular monitor. Personally it doesn’t bother me on the Win 4 but it doesn’t feel nice not getting what I expected.
I'm honestly ignorant here--is sub-pixel layout actually that consistent between makes and models? I feel like I remember TechTeamGB reaming a panel maker a while back showing that their layout was atrocious by some measure I didn't quite understand.
Cleartype/subpixel rendering is entirely for improving the look of text on low pixel density displays. The win4 has a very *high* pixel density display, there is little to no benefit from using it and it should basically be switched to normal antialiasing instead.
Not sure if they're fixed it, but I recall that Windows doesn't even do this properly on its own when it knows the screen is rotated. Either way, you can run the Cleartype tuner to fix it to the correct subpixel orientation for your display (or it may have also allowed turning off subpixel rendering there too). For programs that aren't high DPI aware, Cleartype also doesn't play well with scaling, which Windows defaults to using on this display, so that could be a good reason to change the text rendering settings too.
Subpixel rendering isn't particularly great for rotated text; letters are predominantly vertical lines which benefit when the subpixels are perpendicular, but when rotated they line up and the improvement is negligible. It's not really Windows' fault, it's just inherent to the technique. It also falls over on other kinds of subpixel layouts, like pentile displays.

They cannot possibly think this is acceptable given what all is required to fix this. Sure it "could" be worse but this is a good bit beyond just updating a driver.
"What does it matter if it's native or not?" The answer is: It matters because if it was *native*, we wouldn't have to take apart our units to reprogram the IC to fix this issue. A native landscape panel (as the panel on the Win4 has been continuously advertised) would likely not have this problem nor require this fix.
the worst thing is that if they didn't attempt this ic trick (especially hiding the use of it and failing), users will still be better off with just a portrait screen like on many handhelds, just having to find workarounds for old games. Quite a number pick the win4 over competitors product at that time as they are the only one advertising native landscape.
Really informative and thanks for the tutorial; I'm sure this will help many people. I know buying these handhelds are a risk, as it is early adopting. But... Holy hell. Absolutely ridiculous that they released this product with this issue. My stutter was horrendous. It should be commonplace at GPD QC to test screen calibrations- color accuracy, gamut, etc. But especially the refresh rate! Not hard to do a UFO ghosting test and see the issue. How does that fall through the cracks?
i asked them if they can do it before they sendit to me, they didnt and wrote to me that it only occurs in 2d games and i should refund ore wait for the next device. i will never buy from them again.
One of the problems with screen rotation is it adds latency. The screen is buffered then transposed thus adding a frame or more of latency. On a PC games it might not be as noticeable as many pc games are often designed to work with latency. For retro emulation though it may be noticeable.
No non-CRT display you will ever own has zero frames of latency. And it's not the screen rotation that causes the delay - the buffer is necessary for the displayport-to-mipi translation, which is required even for a straight passthrough. As the rotation is done as part of the same process, you get it entirely for free.
That was hell of a good job done, tnx to the GPD community for the solution, I do really love that community the most in handheld space, I have a feeling that "GPDers" are even more dedicated that "deckers" :D

First their hall joystick bait and switch (albeit not really, but decided not to notify the community) and now this. Beautiful machine but gpd is clearly still like children.
I was looking to buy a Win 4 cuz i love the formfactor with a keyboard, but after the handling of this issue as well as reports about suspicious software in their windows installations i'm never gonna buy anything from GPD. ROG Ally it is then, at least for now.
Why am I so angry? Because I spent $1200 on my Win 4. Every product they ship comes with the words, "actions speak louder than words." They shipped this expensive product with a garbage charger and these issues. They could have spent a few bucks for a charger that isn't garbage, but they chose to save themselves a few bucks instead. This screams, "DON'T BUY ME." You ask why people nitpick, when they specifically advertised themselves as different because there was no need for any translation or change or this ridiculous nightmare we're currently going through. I bought this precisely because it was supposed to not have the same issues as other devices, because it was supposed to be better. Your dismissal of these concerns even given what has happened makes me wonder if I have misplaced my trust in you. I understand that it's the internet and people are quick to anger and judgment, but I am sick of being credulous and being taken for a ride by people I keep giving a pass to over and over again. I feel like I'm being gaslit and I just don't have the patience for it anymore, and I shouldn't have to be patient for this kind of money, even as an enthusiast. There's no such thing as, "basically the same." There's a reason people pay premiums of many times over for something being EXACTLY AS ADVERTISED. It's because the details matter and when you don't deliver on your promises YOU ARE LYING. No more room for excuses. You sell me your product based on an idea, then you'd fucking damn well better deliver 100%.
Oh, I totally understand that it sucks and we shouldn't sweep it under the rug, but how about we give it the ol college try? It's great, because we can all bolster credibility and make fraud okay by acknowledging reality! When you admit culpability, that absolves you of all responsibility. We're all so lucky to have a company as honorable as GPD that can own up to mistakes when they're forced to confront the damage they've caused.
No one really cares about your hate speech lol. Just because of one problem that is yes annoying but can actually be fixed, you type this hate speech. Lol good for you

I think you really need to address all the very bad things going on with GPD. You are promoting them and talking them up but people really need to be aware of everything they have done. -They install Chinese spyware on their devices, even still after being caught repeatedly over the years the new win 4 has it. -They have lied multiple times about the specs(see this video). And other times in the past. -They do not support their products, if you have an issue outside or china you’re SOL. -Their quality control is none existent, there are so many issues with their devices when they finally ship.
1. Which spyware? 2. Lying about the specs? How? Is it about the landscape display? Well seems you can’t read or did not hear what Phawx said? 3. The GPD Discord gives you all the support you need. I am definitely sure you didn’t hear Phawx saying that too. 4. So many issues with the device? Name some of them.

My gpd has never had any issues with any game I'm not sure what's going on?
Al parecer sólo sucede si lo formateas, dentro de la siguiente semana subirán un driver que soluciona el problema
It's subtle so most people won't see it unless they go looking for it. Certain game types make it more obvious. But if you don't notice it you're golden, you don't have to do anything.
Did you use all the components listed (like pogo pins, and header block)? I only see wires and the flasher chip, right?
Edit: After reading the documentation it makes perfect sense. Thank you!
Are the pogo pins and header blocks necessary or can I make a connection, only using the jump wires?
What size tape should be used to resecure the trim piece that was removed from the bezel
What does it matter? Why is it different? It was a selling point. It was advertised. It was a reason to buy this product over another. You don't get to say, "hey, here's this thing that makes our product better so you should buy it!" and then say, "yeah, well, it doesn't actually do the thing, it just does an excellent impression of the thing, and you wouldn't notice if you hadn't actually tried to use what we've sold you for its intended purpose."
Maybe I'm blind, (lol) but I don't see the difference before/after. ☹
I don't either
i did it ans the testufo is smooth now. BUT i cant use 45hz anymore. when i try, i get a black screen. what can i do/
Can the flipper zero be used as the interface to update the display?
I have a gpd win 4 where my joysticks and buttons don’t work. Any ideas community?
Where can I buy the updated one without this issue?
Hope that it's all fixed with the new gen Ryzen CPU's
man this design.... it's literally the perfect one..
Steam deck is the perfect one
@@donniedarko4497 steam deck is too big and i don't like the overall design, plus it doesn't have a physical keyboard, GPD win4 is superior and has smarter design, sliding the screen to use physical keyboard, that's brillant
@@donniedarko4497 I own both. Steam Deck is a tremendous omni-console but if you're looking for a handheld cyberdeck, you need a non-onscreen keyboard. Of course, the second I fold that keyboard away my hands start cramping--hopefully the grips I'm 3D printing right now will help there, but if not, hey! I still have my Steam Deck!

Serious question, how did you miss this on your initial review? Was it that minor?
Is this problem also happening with the 2023 version?
Does this affect the newer 7640u/7840u versions?
I have GPD win 4 final model were they affected as well?
Halo i have a gpd win 4 coming, is safe to do?
Or there is some risk that i brick something?
Is this studder problem fixed on newly shipping GPD Win 4 devices now by GPD? Or do I still have to fix it myself?
Maybe just my eyes but I’m not seeing this in UFO test or in emulated master system games I’m on a 16 GB 1TB white GPD WIN 4
Sucede solo si lo formateas
@VIDEOMASTER 00 I didn't format mine and I absolutely see it and have posted videos of it.
@@videomaster0090 I formatted mine and don't see it...
I will buy (GPD win4) soon. Do you advise me to take 16 RAM or 32GB? I will play high graphics. only play games
Does this problem exist on aya neo air plus?
So the newest batch of Win 4 will still having this portrait screen?
There is a bios update that fixes this problem a long time ago.
Don’t really have the equipment to get this done, but can anybody help me do this where can I get this program thing that he hooked up to it
Thanks!!
No one shows the gpd 4 sideways it’s a THICC boi
@Thephawx what Is the kit in the video. Any link to it
When he says GPD has fixed it, does he mean that if you order a Win4 today, will it be already fixed out of the box?
Efectivamente es así no compre 1, pregunte y el vendedor me confirmo 😊
That's a great question
no
lol no
Is this affect new devices or its just for the ones that were bought last week last month last year?
Are the next GPD 4 comming out with this fixed or they are all going to be like this?
Deal-breaker for me.
Don't expect anything to be fixed. If this is a deal-breaker for you, stay away.
@@wordsmith451 Now hoping Rog ally wont habe the same issue.
@@AltoBo123 even with this issue, the win 4 is a much better product than the rog ally
Where can I get that kind of programmer device? Or how are they usually called on stores?
Has GPD implemented this fix on their new retail devices? I am about to pull the trigger and have no issue doing the flash myself, just makes me more interested in buying if it has already been fixed.
Currently produced units do not yet include this fix. I would highly recommend waiting until that changes. Also, you may want to consider waiting for the inevitable switch from 6800u to 7840u. I say that as someone who already has a Win 4.
@@tappersreviews4677 When will the production change to units that have this fixed, you think?:
I wonder if someone in community will start offering this fix as a service 🤔
@@jooly_garxia if I get the parts and stuff I'd do it for a flat fee (not including shipping)
I already do a lot of pretty expensive pocket knife mods and mail them back to customers so I don't see how this much different.
My man. Thanks so much. I’m going to purchase a Win 4 now! Much appreciated.
I would wait until they come fixed from the factory. its BS to make consumers do this
DON'T.
Dont buy. Just get something else
I bought already then I saw this video
This is ridiculous. Last I tinkered with a gpd product (gpd win 2) I busted a speaker. Ain't no way I'm going to do the same with a design fault that GPD CLEARLY knew about but decided to hide.
First their hall joystick bait and switch (albeit not really, but decided not to notify the community) and now this. Beautiful machine but gpd is clearly still like children.
Does this happens in Al the devices? I haven’t noticed this issue on my win 4
It’s on them all you just haven’t noticed it, doesn’t bother everyone
I was looking to buy a Win 4 cuz i love the formfactor with a keyboard, but after the handling of this issue as well as reports about suspicious software in their windows installations i'm never gonna buy anything from GPD. ROG Ally it is then, at least for now.
What suspicious software?
Even with this issue, the win 4 is still better than the rog ally. If you want to go with a device that limits you, be my guest
I reply that's ( here ) 10 times and never noticed anything
You said GPD has fixed it, does that mean the models you order now, won't have this issue?
There is a bios update that fixes this problem a long time ago.
But this was the new ROG handheld with the same problem, you’ll be bragging about it in a bad way.
Lol good for you
If you want to, don’t buy their products again. No one cares. It is your money and your choice not ours
@@AugustineKusiDuah-bk4fr piss off
I blame the phone industry for messing up retrogaming handhelds. Lol!
You say GPD has fixed it.. Does that mean that at some batch it was fixed? if so, which batch!? :) Or do you mean this manual process of fixing it ourselves it was fixed?
Honestly, i hate it when people say things without proof. Please give us proof before you say things that are not true.
You said they have lied about the specs in the past. Give us proof. What did they lie about? If you are not able to give us proof, then you don’t deserve to say anything
@@AugustineKusiDuah-bk4fr look in their subreddit…
i just sent mine back to droix, device was a lie. native landscape 40hz panel my ass.
To add to this, 45hz felt less smooth than 30fps does on my steam deck. Its actually a huge let down overall. New found appreciation for how optimized the deck really is
After the fix it is literally impossible to tell, all refresh rates are as smooth as the Deck.
@James Churchill ah that's good to know. So the conversion was the cause all along. Maybe il get one when they iron out all these issues and update with this year's chip
Thank you for making this video. Do you think that GPD will fix this issue with the new batches of GPD Win 4’s?
Thank you again!!
They won't fix anything.
Doesn't seem too difficult to fix, but, this is very on-brand for GPD. Also a reminder of the risk of being a first-round backer of a product.

I lost interest in gpd win 4 when i knew the win mini is coming soon.
Interested in that as well but apprehensive about it due to the likely premium prices and their track record, their past few devices all seem to have some kind of issues, not minor ones as well.
