  • Alexander Riazantsev, a well known Caro-Kann theoretician and second of Valentina Gunina who regularly plays Caro-Kann plays 2019 Aeroflot open winner Kaido Kulaots, extremely sharp tactician. Caro-Kann is meant to create a calm position where White don;t get too many opportunities for sharp game. Kaido does try it and plays most principled advance variation which is very popular on top level in recent years. Alexandr plays 3.c5 which is so called Khenkin variation, used by a Soviet-German Grandmaster Igor Khenkin.
The Caro-Kann Defence is a chess opening characterized by the moves:
    1. e4 c6
The Caro-Kann is a common defence against the King's Pawn Opening and is classified as a "Semi-Open Game" like the Sicilian Defence and French Defence, although it is thought to be more solid and less dynamic than either of those openings. It often leads to good endgames for Black, who has the better pawn structure.
