    simply experiment with values​​.
    values ​​are not critical.
    R = (when VU meter have big ohmic resistance put there 1K or something similar ) .
    C = (determines how fast will the needle oscillate / values in microFarads uF)
    D = just make from the AC the DC

    1st circuit it's almost an 1/2 wave rectifier, right?

    Can I use this circuit to convert an ordinary voltmeter into a VU meter.

      Yes . C is there to smooth the " wave " [ how fast will the "needle" oscillate ] . R depends on your Voltmeter ... Try to experiment with RC values ...

      @@AlbiDartanan thanks for the quick reply. I will definitely try it. A cheap voltmeter is around $3-4, while a VU meter can be around $25-40. Both are basically galvanometers. I can get a photo printout of an expensive VU meter background and paste it to a voltmeter.
