  • I show You DIY video "How to make 40 levels LED VU METER without using IC".
    Don't worry if You don't have electronic skills yet. Just write or show this video into electronic spare-part store shopkeeper when You buy that all components needed, then follow again the step-by-step how to make it on this video when You already in your home.
    Sometimes to build the circuit like this we need 4 or more ICs such as LM3914 or LM3915 or LM3916, but not using the IC in this video.

    American guitarist and studio recording engineer here, Love the content, always looking to increase understanding. the concept at 9:05 with the resistor transistor and potentiometer wiper center is super interesting to me, but it seems in general could this project be done way lower volt less resistances? maybe 9 v, but I presume you'd just want to use an IC chip at that point? inspiring work! would love more WHY information and maybe schematics/diagram, link you have a gift here. Thank you!

      Welcome friend. For 9:05 it just a very simple driver and convert audio signal to the voltages signal.
      Every 1n4148 diode need 0.7 volt to start working, thats why this circuit need minimum main voltage 28 volt so that all LEDs can light up at the maximum peak. If you use 9 volt, so the LEDs that lights up is only up to the 12th LED (9/0.7) when at the maximum peak.

    i would like to make this with line level or headphone level. on usb voltage with a normal usb battery pack. do you know a video or a diagram to make it? the american db tracker costs 65 euros lol. if i can build it myself for the half price then im happy

      Good question, we have to know every 1N4148 diode have minimum 0.62v forward voltage. So to make all LEDs goes light up we have to use minimum Supply voltage with this formula: (Forward voltage x numbers of LED).

    If a chaser circuit use BD 139/NPN can I use BD140/PNP instead? And do I have to change the circuit?

      If you change NPN to PNP, you need to exchange between all Anode and Cathode (including + and - power supply).

      Sure, you can use any NPN transistor, but please pay attention to the EBC pins.

    By using a capacitor, how can you make the LEDs fade very slowly on and very slowly out and maybe make it adjustable?

      Increase capacitor value to make it more slowly. To make it adjustable faster or slowly that will need another potentiometer with special circuit.

      Tegangan 24 volt, minimal arus 300 mili Ampere (0,3 Ampere). Kalau masih tersisa 2 atau 3 lampu LED terakhir tidak nyala, coba tegangan di naikkan 25 atau sampe 28 volt.

      Each Diode average Breakdown voltage is 0.6v, so for 40 Diodes is 24v (minimum), that's to make till the last on all diodes can works.

    Interesting that the meter only responds to the bass frequencies and not the whole audio spectrum?

      The signal input I connect to my subwoofer as I have shown in my previous videos, so only bass voice will take effect to the LED light movements.

      For class D amplifier you have to use more audio filter for the amplifier output so the LO frequency (around 300kHz) can't interfering.

      @@moristo Thanks, Not sure if you misunderstood my question or that I just worded it badly.
      I wasn't talking about the full scale deflection I meant the steps For example if I wanted 0db to be LED30 and the voltage is say 1V (It would actually be 0.775v for line level) then 0.03V will light the 1st LED and increasing the Voltage by 0.03v will light each LED in turn. That would be Linear i'm assuming all the resistors to the LEDs are limiting resistors and as all the others going to the transistors are the same value the scale will be linear, or that the same increase in voltage will light the next LED? opposed to Logarithmic where each step is say 3db which would require different value resistors at each step and a doubling of voltage at each step. You can still scale it so that LED 30 comes on at 1V the difference is that to light Led 29 takes 0.5V rather that 0.97V and LED 31 will take 2Volts rather than 1.03V.
      So when you say calibration tool where you meaning a meter to measure the voltage to then adjust FSD or did you mean a Log scale calculation to work out the correct resistor steps for 3db increase?
      Anyway the video is very good and It's a pretty cool way of making an LED VU meter.. I was also impressed with you soldering skills (or moreover your component bending skill) it's not easy to make something like that without a PCB and have it robust enough to handle it without either shorting out or falling to pieces.
      I was just interested as I want to make 32 of these for a 32track meter bridge. I'm just trying to work out would the cost of 40 transistors and 40 scaling resistors be less than 4x 3915n bought from china at $1for 5? Also with the chip method you get dot mode option. Either way it will be expensive as I'll need around 1500 LEDs or 150 10 segment bargraph modules and a hefty PSU. Not to mention PCBs, other descrete components and an enclosure (which I'll have to make.) I guess the other way to do it would be to use the 4x 3915n chips and multiplex them between 2, 3or 4 channels but again there the cost of the multiplexing ICs and you're still going to need a good PSU.

      @@Lamster66 Based on your comment I feel that you know about the forward voltage of a diode, so I think you know abaut how much voltage for each LED step to light up. The resistor at each transistor base will limit the peak base to emitter voltage in each transistor.
      For a comparison of total component prices between using IC and Transistor, you can find out yourself based to the component price on the marketplace.

    Led nya jenis apa mas? Soalnya sekarang rata² led nya sangat terang jadi kurang cocok buat vu meter..

      LED biasa yang 3 volt, diameter 3mm atau yang 5mm, banyak di jual di pasaran, kecuali di planet Mars dll belum ada yang jual.

      Eu faço meus vídeos para todos, mesmo sem conhecimentos de eletrônica (veja meu canal "sobre"). Na verdade, o diagrama do circuito não é mais importante do que o próprio circuito; diagramas de circuitos são necessários apenas para aqueles com habilidades eletrônicas. Por outro lado, aqueles com habilidades eletrônicas podem desenhar diagramas de circuitos por conta própria.

      Kualitas LED yang kurang baik, kalau LED yang seperti itu sebaiknya nilai Resistor setiap LED di naikkan 3k3.
