My husband and I got married on this train in 1999, and this takes me back to that wonderful day. I agree with many commenters about the music; an audio of the train’s noise would be more appropriate if you can swing it. It’s still neat to see it from a bird’s-eye (or in this case, drone’s-eye) perspective though! Keep up the great work!

Awesome Video! The shots through the smoke above the train are a perspective that you would only expect from CGI! well share this on our FB page!

Beautiful photography. Thank you! But let's ditch the music. Let's hear the train! We all can listen to pop music anytime we like.

Due to the camera being mounted on a drone the only sound you would hear would be the motors buzzing...gets annoying real quick. Ill have to find a steam train mp3 file...if u find one let me know

Ah, I didn't think of that. Thanks for the insight, Mike. How about dangling a small, lightweight microphone from the drone on a 15' lanyard? Would that reject the drone engine noise enough to capture the action below? I guess, however, it might be an impediment to flying. Maybe too much wind noise, too. Time for experimentation?
In any event, thanks again for posting your video. Looks great. Make more! How about Maryland Midland's UBEG?

David Hughes haha thats creative...i could mount a camera on the train near the engine and record a run down the track then take the sound and add it to the video. Ill have to try that out. I dont know about any other train events but would love to capture a lot more...if you know of some please send me dates and locations or a website! Thanks!

Great idea, Mike. Hope you have enough battery life in both cameras to make that work. Sync up the sound from the on-board camera with the video from the drone and you've got a real winner there.
Maryland Midland's UBEG: every Tuesday and Thursday it leaves Union Bridge, loaded with cement, in the morning. The train gets to Glyndon/Emory Grove in the late morning, drops off the loads, and picks the empties from the day before from CSX on the interchange track. Then they run back to Union Bridge by early afternoon. Plenty of power on the head end to make it up Falls hill with the loads just west of Emory Grove. Fun and big noise all around. Fuel up your drone!

2:00 through 2:44 represents some of the very best of what aerial filming can offer. What I want to know is if you were on board the train while piloting or (more likely) did you operate the drone from various locations where the train passed?

thanks...i was actually on the ground. the train ride is about an hour long and battery life on my drone is about 20 mins...they would get pissed if they had to keep stopping the train so i could change batteries

Loved the video. Great aerial footage. The music was good too. I used to live in Frederick county for many years. Had seen the WS operate on occasion when traveling on US route 15. I've been looking at the DJI phantom 2+ vision back last year. Now I see DJI has come out with a Phantom 3. Reviews for the Phantom 3 look good so far. What kind of drone and camera are you using if you don't mind me asking?

+John Stup this was done with a dji phantom 2 and a gopro hero 3 black edition. shot in 1080 60fps. Its a great set up and I love it. I do have a phantom 3 and that's even better. have yet to make a full video with it yet. besides instagram edits.
