On Saturday October 24, 2015, I was given the rare opportunity to ride through the Hoosac Tunnel via Amtrak's Autumn Express. Traveling between North Adams and Florida, MA, this 4.75 mile long journey took just over 19 minutes.
Amtrak was very kind to me and allowed me to ride on the back deck of the VIP car to shoot while going through the tunnel! This gives us what is probably the best Hoosac Tunnel footage to date.
Please enjoy the footage and the banter I had with the 2 relief engineers!
Key elements:
00:33 - Enter the West Portal
02:22 - End of brick works (There are other segments of brick through the tunnel. This is where the main tube ends.)
04:47 - West Signal Light
10:42 - Central Shaft Bore (1 of 2 Large dark "void" on right. There are two of these, one on either side, which bore in and twist up to the central shaft)
10:42 - Beginning of Central Shaft Brick Arch
10:46 - Hoosac Hotel (On right - Marked by old catenary pole sticking out from wall)
10:48 - Central Shaft Bore (2 of 2 - Large dark "void" on left.)
11:09 - Midway Point of Tunnel - Note Two Reflective Discs on Right
16:58 - East Signal Light
19:49 - Exit the East Portal
If you spot other things which should be noted, please comment below!
This excursion was being pulled by Amtrak Phase III heritage units 822 (since shopped and most likely to be scrapped) and 145, both P42DC's.

That was so much fun to watch! After growing up in NA and being raised in the shadow of this wonderous feat, being able to view this clear imagery is just a huge treat! I was lucky enough to have gone through the tunnel as a child with my family on a train ride that was a rare event....(1980's?) I can't honestly even remember half of it I was so young....however...I do remember the train stopping in the middle and turning off all lights for a few seconds.....that somehow lingers in a child's memory....lol....that ride made me a pretty big train lover myself......so I very much appreciate your footage......congratulations on your capture!
+Laurie Palmer Thank you Laurie! I'm glad you enjoyed it and it brought back some childhood memories!

Absolutely incredible that an engineering marvel such as this was finished ~150 years ago. God bless all those who perished during the long period of construction.

The only scary about going through this tunnel on foot, is the distance you'd have to walk.
It’s completely pitch black at one point. You better hope your flashlight doesn’t die.

Awesome tunnel, great landscape, beautiful people.
Is just me or everything in the united states are so beautiful?
I hope you all are aware that you live in an extraordinary place and appreciate, its landscape, people and sacrifice made to build this beautiful tunnel that led to development and progress.
I envy you so much
Cheers and best regards from Brazil :)
Thank you! Yes, I'm well aware of how beautiful the US is.
Many people in the USA take this tunnel for granted. A good person like you from Brazil has to point this out so it isn't forgotten. 👍👍

Haha guess I'm not the only who came here from Bedtime Stories. Beyond all the ghost stories, does anyone else just find tunnels/underground places in general really fascinating?
More of scary
@ Zack; Yes. I am a #Holden-Village mine fan. That place was built in 1912 if I’m correct, but long underground tunnel’s & mines fascinate me like suspension bridges do. So this video being documented as a “haunted” tunnel and it being 5 miles long and an old dilapidated train-tunnel just “get’s my goat”🐾😈🐈⬛

Hats off to the workers and engineers who constructed this tunnel. It's some feat with primitive explosives, pick axes and shovels. They were definitely made of stronger stuff back then.
Strong, independent women could've done it in half the time.

I have heard voices inside there about 100 yards in from the East Portal. I thought it may have been kids deeper inside the tunnel. An old timer near the train signal told me it was the sounds of ghosts. Only a few can hear them. I am not sure what that means. I definately heard them.
that´s the tunnel, @post 10 shows today

This is a great video to see what I actually couldn't 42 years ago when I jumped on an empty freighter's boxcar while stopped in NA then it proceeded running from W to E... Pitch black the whole time! No charge for that ride though, but I had to jump off while slowed down coming into FL. Much more of an adrenaline rush than a Disney ride for sure!

Watching this after bedtime stories
8:20 - could be the light playing off rocks on the tunnel - buuuut - it kinda looks like something dark on the left of screen darts straight into the ground, from about a 3rd of the way up the wall. After watching the rest of the footage. I saw lots more rock formations jutting out that failed to reproduce the effect, so it's a little mysterious.
Very cool and rare footage! After seeing it, I am even MORE amazed that the tunnel used to have TWO tracks in it... how did they FIT THEM??
+NellsStuff wait... how come the east end DOES look wide enough for 2 tracks? Thanks to all the repair work done at the west end making it narrower?
I wonder that myself. Seems that either train width dimensions have changed or minimum clearance standards have increased? It's funny how danger obsessed so many Americans today are, when you consider the routine risks those who manned projects like this took for granted as the cost of putting food on the table. That's true throughout most of history, and here we are today terrified of and spending billions to combat terrorism, which has only killed just 32 Americans in the 15 years since 9/11.
The trains were smaller in all dimensions. But over the years they grew in size
NellsStuff Very, VERY close!
There's 2 tunnels .
I was on that train two cars ahead of you. This video is terrific! Could I pay you for a DVDs copy of it?
+Mike Thanks! That was a great ride, wasn't it? I'll PM you about a DVD.
Live about 2.5 miles away from the Eastern Portal and have been at both portals but never thru the tunnel so thanks for filming this. My parents and grandparents had all ridden thru when they had passenger trains running all the time but I never got the chance.

Wow good catch, I missed that. Creepy
I can't see it 😢
What time in the video does the train pass under the central shaft ? (edit - I've found the answer. at about 10:45)
It's the 10:42-10:48 time frame. There is a brick arch lining the tunnel here, so we don't actually see the shaft itself. But if you look on the right at 10:42 and left at 10:48, you can see some voids in the sides which are the access tubes to the shaft.
Legends say Carl is still unsure who called to him from the train that day
Great video!!!! I see collapses of the lining in spots. Best way to explore a tunnel guys! 👍
Thank you! At the 59 second spot, you may have noticed a pretty large rubble pile forming on the left side. This is where last February's cave in occurred.

Bedtime stories got me here after watching the video
Nice work. I'm surprised you didn't cover your faces some of the "hobos" say it's tough to breathe in the long tunnels/diesel fumes and a lack of oxygen
Thank you! It really wasn't too bad in there. A little fume-ish, but nothing we couldn't handle. And luckily, if need be we could have just ducked in to the passenger car again!
That used to be 2 tracks wide. I guess locomotives and cars were smaller back then
It's pretty crazy to think about that!
nice video man good video quality
Thanks! It was a fun ride.
I Hope All the Spirits didn't get mad. At least 80 men are buried underneath the tracks.
They seemed alright this day!
@@Imrfilms Mostly Irish Immigrants built the tunnel. In the early 1800s Immigrants who died on the job were buried on the worksite. Thats how we treated the Men who built this Country.
As a Taxi driver in NY I worked with B and M crews who went through it. and knew a lot about it. Rail crews know there are ghosts. Its Real.
Bedtime stories brought me here too🙂
I sure enjoyed the video.Did you have a light on or was there a light at the back of train so we could see the tunnel? As I watched this I was thinking of the men long ago working right where you passed to make this.Wow it must have seemed like forever. And what amazes me is that back then they made the east and west end meet up that in itsself is quiet a feat really amazing how they did it.
I think the video is lit up because the video camera was set in infrared mode. The only light they must've had was light from the video at the back of the video camera.
Neat. Bedtime Stories did an episode about this tunnel's alleged hauntings and incidents attributed to it. Funky to see it like this.
Also really weird to hear about a town named "Florida" when I live in the state. ;p
Thanks for the comment!
I recognised this from bed time stories
In Japan, there are several extremely long tunnels.
Imagine being stuck in the middle of the tunnel
A lot of people walk it
Drinking Hoosac tunnel ale, oddly enough.
Nice video!
(Edited my remarks after speaking with the film producer)
??? Any supporting evidence to support this claim?
@@Imrfilms I will look up all the research I've done on it in the past to get the sources of which I've been educated on. Most of which can be found on Google I'm sure.
I have pictures which I can't post here (because it not possible) of the building with two twine engines that supplied the tunnel with fresh air, which also is located over the old elevator shaft at the half way point of 2.5 miles, which is not capped other than by the building at the top of the mountain (searchable by Google maps).
In it's time it was the longest tunnel ever built in America. The total length of the tunnel is 5 miles. Built with a wooden boring machine. The moved to dynamite because of the hardness of the rock and only moving forward 3 inches a day.
The workers grave yard that you spoke of is located not on site but down the road in Monroe.
There is a small tunnel on the left of the hoosic tunnel which was the start of the original tunnel but was abandoned after a collapse and the small portion that still remained was later converted into a dynamite shelter while the tunnel we have today was built.
The train was originally to transport people in an open air transport rail car. There used to be a passanger train stop located on the east side between the road and the tunnle on the right side looking at the tunnel. (Pictures avialable on google)
I really did like your video... my wife and I have spent lots if time educating people about this tunnel. On top of spending lots of time there, we also use this tunnel as part of our tours when we've had out of staters visit us. Your video is the first of its kind in all our research and you did an excellent job recording it. When in saw the number of followers and comments of people wanting to visit as well... I realized that it's important you have as many facts as you can have about it and make sure there as accurate as possible. History is so important and making sure the true history of this tunnel is important to know. I recommend to anyone wanting to visit this location, to research the hell out of it. The history of this tunnel is truely amazing and should be past down correctly from generation to generation.
Like I said, your video is amazing and is a rare opportunity to see what you were able to see. But I'm a history buff and wouldn't want to see the history of the hoosic tunnel diminished. Such as how it got its name... by it's financier... Mr. Hoosic, who's manor (Hoosic Manor) still stands today in North Adams. All of the stone work on the property comes from the hoosic tunnel.
I'm battling cancer right now, so it may take a bit for me to locate all these sources. I know it wasn't to difficult to find them all online.
Thank you for listening and sorry my original comment may have come off as harsh.
@@ericlapointe1150 I appreciate your love of the tunnel and research into it! I think part of the issue is miscommunication from what was said at the time vs. perception now. There is a brick arch over the central shaft. It's above the grade in the tunnel itself. This was placed to prevent falling debris from hitting trains (or people) on the tracks. There are bores on either side of the tunnel which spiral up to the central shaft. You're correct that the central shaft building with the vents is capped on the top as well.
Thank you for clarification on the cemetery location. I actually hadn't known about that until one of the reserve engineers riding on the train with me mentioned it (as heard in the video).
While I do know a lot about the tunnel (I produced "On to the Hoosac, on to the West", a feature docu which includes interviews with a handful of historians and tunnel experts who have dedicated thousands of hours to the research and history of the tunnel. I too have been invited to numerous historical societies and events to present on the tunnel), I'm always open to hearing new information! I know I'm not always right about things.
Sorry to hear about your cancer. I pray it gets better and you can heal completely from it!
ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=hoosac+tunnel+documentary
Is this track still regularly used by trains?
Yes, for freight. It had been closed for almost two months due to a cave in. They're still doing final repairs, but freight in rolling through again!
how girthy is the central shaft ?
The shaft is about a 27x15 foot oval the entire 1,028 feet up! At track level, they built a brick arch over the track to prevent anything falling from landing on the tracks or trains/people. They then drilled side spirals to either side of the rails to suck fumes up from.
Did anyone else see something crossing the tracks around the 16.50 mark? Looked like dark smoke.... Maybe my eyes are tired.....
this is so awesome.
Thank you! It's a really great tunnel to visit if you never have before.
So I see what look like man doors on the right hand side, where do those go to or are they just spots to hide from the train?
You have it.
What's the painted numbers for along the right side wall?
I'm not 100% sure, but it looks like there are 100' markers starting from the West. If you note, right after the Hoosac Hotel at 10:46, you'll see marker 125 which comes out to 12,500 feet, half the total distance of the tunnel. (25,081')
Hoosac Hotel marker? What is that all about?
In the middle of the tunnel, there's an electrical room that's carved out into the side. Over the years, it got the nickname as the Hoosac Hotel (or some call it Hoosac Hilton.). Probably because workers would nap in it! ;-)

You think building this was bad, driving tunnels through the Swiss Alps was worse:
Gotthard Tunnel (original) - 9 & 3/4 miles long (1882).
Loetschberg Tunnel - (original) - 9 & 3/4 miles long (1907).
Simplon Tunnel (once the world's longest rail tunnel) - 12 & 3/4 miles long (1905).
Albula Tunnel - 3 & 1/2 miles long (1902).
Having lost it to the Japanese when they built the Seikan Tunnel, the Swiss regained the title of the world's longest - and deepest - rail tunnel when they opened the Gotthard Base Tunnel in 2016. It is a staggering 35 miles long.......
Those are some long tunnels! I know that some engineers for this project traveled to Europe to study tunneling techniques used there.

DANGER, DO NOT WATCH THIS VIDEO OR RIDE THIS TRAIN. the tunnel was built over an Indian burial ground, and people still disappear while on the train and some are found bludgeoned to death in their "private" compartments. merely viewing this video can be very dangerous to the viewer. people watching this video at home or at the office have died, some by "spontaneous combustion" or disappeared. Brooklyn resident Melvin Goombah was watching this video on RUclips when he disappeared from his living room after his wife went to get the coffee. she was only gone 3 minutes. is RUclips aware of this phenomenon? i also do not like the demeanor of the announcers. i am suspicious and wonder what their real goal is here. a Disney connection would not surprise me.
