Hi Ren was the first song I saw of his (before I fell down the Ren rabbit hole) and I've watched DOZENS of reaction videos since. You're the first one that actually used the words hope and doubt (which was also my thought). The religious overtones are what people sometimes fall on when it comes to doubting things in our lives. (By the way, notice the lights blinking at the end as well when he gets more confidence? To me that's saying that doubt is still there in the back of our minds)... Seriously though, I'm 51 and this is by far the most amazing and emotional song/video I've ever seen in my entire life. I can't tell enough people about this wonderful artist!

This is the kind of artistry that gives "broken" people hope. Ren, through this performance piece, has become to a lot of people exactly what he stated in the song, "...the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope". So powerful, so impactful. The song structure itself is incredible. It starts off as a battle between his positive (Angel) and negative (Demon) aspects, the negative then makes an overpowering last ditch effort to reign supreme, tearing free and trying to take control, but ultimately fails as the final act, being the "God" aspect, emerges Triumphant, though still acknowledging and accepting that it will ALWAYS be a battle because we are all "a coin with 2 different sides". It's a beautifully cathartic and raw musical masterpiece. Ren is truly special. Welcome to the Ren rabbit-hole, it's a trip worth taking. This was the 4th take he did and yes, it was done live. Wait until you hear some of his other stuff, especially his storytelling ("The Tale of Jenny & Screech" FULL Version). You haven't even touched the breadth of this young man's talent yet. The pig character (imo) represents the doctors and therapist who have essentially butchered him for years through their misdiagnosis. It's the system that focuses on peddling more pills than on genuinely trying to help to fix broken/ill people, caring more about profit than individual health. The bastardization of the hippocratic oath. He literally thought he was going insane because he was told repeatedly that the pain and symptoms he was experiencing were all in his head (psychosomatic). He had reached a point where he literally resigned himself to dying before he reached 30. Turns out he had Lyme's disease the whole time and it ran rampant through his system for 10 years, even to the point of causing brain damage. Ironically, if Ren hadn't gone through what he has, would he have ever made the art he has? There's no question that his suffering has shaped his music and now he's finally getting the recognition he undoubtedly deserves. I've said it before, I'll say it again, Ren is special.

The lights flicker in the end because he’s integrated, accepting all of himself, is how I saw it. You’re right about the flickering when his shadow self was speaking in the first part of the song, and being on steadily during his hopeful calmer self’s speeches before the joyful/chaotic/home girl from fifth element end. :)

Ren is therapy for so many from one song he helps so many people open up in ways therapists struggle to do in person. First time i watched Hi Ren i had a panic attack but thought i needed to watch it again so i watched someone reacting to it that was the best thing i could do i have watched many times since. One thing i think about this song is it needs to be seen by every one even in schools after a certain age, because how many children kill themselves because of the negativity towards them from nasty comments and bullying to them believing what is said. Born in Belfast during the troubles I went through hell, bullied all through school to the point i attempted suicide twice, and to many issues in my life since then I am a recovering alcoholic 11 years clean I suffer PTSD and other health issues so the majority of bad days over good is high, if this bullying had been dealt with i may have had a reasonable life not the existence i have to deal with now
A lucky few of us found him busking on the streets of Brighton a few years back. Its magical to see a street performer as I first knew him, blossom into an artist that has become global in his art.
The Spanish guitar is the applesauce on the front of the spoon, and the subject matter is the spinach that follows it. Parents understand. Like a GOOD thriller...there are moments of beauty interspersed with horror. I cried for a solid hour after listening to this, then called a therapist. THANK YOU Ren Gill! No song I have ever listened to has MOTIVATED me to help myself, and gave me the drive to snatch others from the edge of that dark bridge....we can FIX this....we can come to an understanding, and LIVE. I turned my therapist on to him. She understands. I can be hard to listen to....BUT it pokes those things we struggle to hide, and control. This is a necessary discomfort. Like lancing a boil. I cannot believe the immense WEIGHT I no longer carry around. I don't spend all my time desperately trying to muffle the other side. Like someone else said, the voice has gone from a powerful demon to a sometimes annoying room mate. There will always be a "discussion" and it is helpful to listen to both before deciding. Sometimes....the voice of caution is helpful. My "roommate" and I are settling into a domestic situation, and we are learning to DANCE....TOGETHER.

Another great reaction. It's hard to keep it short when the material is complex. You picked up on the lights faster than I did... it took the second watch before I noticed. I think it's a literal way of showing the battle of light and darkness.
The lights flicker for only dark Ren until the end when he's accepts both sides of himself and becomes one then they flicker faster. A coin just two different sides.
A true artist. The balance is amazing. The singing in the beginning reminded me of a showdown in a western movie. When he ended it the same way, you realize that the showdown never ends. It’s perpetual.

The last bit when he's singing and strumming hard is to signify that he's accepted the light and dark sides and that's the fuel for his creative ability. Basically, the musical version of his last spoken message. That's why you can see the lights flashing whilst he's playing like crazy. I prefer to think of this song not as good versus evil. It's more like blind hope vs logical criticism. The artist needs a certain amount of blind hope to make it to the spotlight despite the overwhelming odds against it. For them the logical criticism of themselves can be very evil. For people with day jobs, blind hope might cause us to spend everything on the lottery trying to get out of poverty cycles. And the logical criticism will stop us because we can do math and the lottery is an empty hole for throwing money into. Towards the end of the song you see a change in both sides where the hope takes on the voice of evil and became a braggart, proclaiming himself above all mortals. And the eventual reconciliation of both sides back into one reasonably hopeful personality. That is why the lights still flicker the critic demon is still there, just pushed aside because he has chosen hope. That's how I see it any how.

I think the lights still flicker at the end because although he can't totally defeat and get rid of his negative side, he can be in a position where it isn't dominating his positive side, which is singing with energy, even though the flickering lights are still present.
