An ARAI Helmet, saved my life. In a Hare Scramble race in FL, I crashed with another rider & my helmet (head) slammed into his foot peg at such a force that the ARAI helmet actually has a huge golf ball size chip in it. (not a crack) The only helmet I wear & will ever trust my life to is ARAI. I have the helmet still in my MX trailer as a reminder. I have at least 10 ARAI helmets & & thank ARAI for saving my life. Plus a CTI knee brace saved me that day.
I'm surprised he didn't show the correct way to measure for a helmet and he didn't discuss how head shape is an important factor when sizing a helmet. Maybe on the next video?
+small_bore Tape measure across the forehead and back ridge of your head, the widest part. Be sure to get measurement in inch and cm
helmet too large for Leno? LOL
I had a Mick Doohan replica made by ARAI which I bought over 25 years ago. I was told that helmets only last for 5 years and to get a new one but could not give it up as it cost me 500 UK pounds back then and I like the style. Recently I had my first fall from a bike ever and I have been riding for over 30 years. Car vs Bike at 95 Km on the motorway. The front and the side of the helmet sustained some damage. more like large scratches. But I am alive and no head injuries. BUT I was wear jeans and tore up all my knees basically all the skin off as I hit the ground and rolled six times. The rest of me was ok due to good boots, jacket, gloves and my Mick Doohan replica ARAI RX-7XX. Thank you mister Hirotake Arai.
What price would you pay for the safety of your brain?
Chris Vidal ......or.... your legs, evidently. I wear Kevlar cargos with CE for casual riding.
Hi Chris, I too had a Mick Doohan Arai RX7XX replica. Loved that helmet so much, but eventually it wore out. I've had several other helmets since, including an RX7-GP that I have just replaced with......guess what.....an RX7-V Mick Doohan replica. Yes, exactly the same paint scheme. Happy days :-)
Well said
Mick Doohan good choice, you like your style, lovely helmet.
AGV Pista GP-RR carbon life saver
l like when the bras too small myself,,,
This was "THE" T-H-E best helmet video ive seen since before I bought my first Helmet 6 months ago. And Im one that before I make a buy. I research research, and then I research what I just researched. T-H-E BEST. And I do wish I had a sales agent as you guys spoke about with fitting a helmet. I have a 3XL long oval head and testing off the shelf was not as easy as other peoples looking to buy. I found one. But NEVER any talk about cheek or liner size options. I would now take a ride to your shop and trade in my current helmet. TO GET THE RIGHT ONE. Thanks Jay and Arai guy for this video!!! I may even share it with others.
I did get a modular bing on the fence with a cruiser bike mentality. But knew a full helmet had more protection, and the Half was more open and traditional (since helmet laws started) And I went with the Flip face. GREAT VIDEO! again.
Arai, Shoei and AGV are probably the best brands of helmets. In that order too. You pay a premium but what's the value of your head?
IMO there is no one company that can been see as the best. If you mean "Best" as is protection for your head. They have tests done by other companies other then the DOT. So in my opinion a "Best helmet" Is one that has the highest rated crash test, bullet proof, gropping from a 20 story building without a headach, tested hemet would be the best. After that... Its just a matter of what fits you snug enough that you can have it on your head for more then 30 minutes and not lose blood flow to your brain. Too much room in that helmet. Is going to make a simple smack on the ground. Become 2-3 smacks as your head is also bouncing around inside. So look for the certifications the helmet has. Not a Brand name. And all three you asked about are all good makers.
Some expensive helmets such as arai only have a 3 star rating. Other cheap helmets such as Shark have 5 star ratings. It differs from helmet to helmet rather than brand to brand. Quick Google search will sort you out.
iTheGeek Yet the large majority of 200mph professional circuit racers and Isle of Man competitors are wearing Arai. Go figure.
Nonsense. Most helmets provide the same protection. Prices go up for comfort, features and color/paint.
Is anybody else sort of concerned with the disregard to potential neck injury that the paramedics had when removing Shinya's helmet? That was savage looking!
Rob Poston yeah that was not rolling proper protocol and risk neck injuries
I'm a medic, and they should have left the helmet on him, unless there was a breathing emergency. If they did remove the helmet, c spine precautions should have been taken. You're correct, they did everything wrong !
very intelligent video.
Very informative...bike shops should play this video in their helmet section of shop regardless of brand.
That last joke would be a no go nowadays. I wish we could go back to accepting and appreciating jokes and comedy for what they are again.
Excellent video! In the crash scene, the driver's face made hard impact with the pavement at 190 mph and his helmet saved him.
Frederick Williams Umm, yea, we all saw the video too.
FranchiseSIX5 we all saw u had nun to say.
Great how he challenged the myth about all dropped helmets being ruined, he kind of has a financial interest not to. What he isn't telling you (understandably), is that Arai, or any brands have different shapes and just don't fit some people properly. Everyone wants an Arai, but a good chunk of them have Shoei, Shark or whatever shaped heads.
I remember once reading an article in a bike magazine explaining head shapes and helmet construction and how they fall into two categories. Egg shaped heads and melon shaped heads, and how companies may cater more to one then the other. Now I can't speak to how accurate the article was with respect to head types, but I have read other articles who have also echoed the statements how different companies shape their helmets specifically round vs egg. This may be why someone will feel more comfortable in a Shoei vs a Arai or Shark vs Bell.
look at revzilla.com and their helmet fitting videos.
there are different "oval" shapes.
intermediate is the Shoei style and I think Arai is the same. but different models in their ranges having slightly different shapes to cater to others.
kwakman99 You're partially correct. The are indeed different head shapes and helmet shapes. You're wrong in thinking a "Shoei is a Shoei". Shoei and Arai both make "round oval" and "intermediate oval" helmets. There is another head type, "long oval", not as common in helmets. For Shoei you have the X-14, RF-1200 and GT-Air (sport bike style) that are all intermediate oval, the Qwest is a round oval. (different opening for upright cruisers vs sport bike tuck). Arai makes the Corsair, Quantum-X, Signet-Q for "IO", and the RX-Q for "RO". Arai also does not have an internal flip down shield as SNELL does not certify that mechanism, or the modular style helmets either. Instead, Arai mounts a flip down, tinted shield that mounts on the outside, as the shield itself. (2 pieces) Hope this helps.
Where do I say a Shoei is a Shoei? What I was getting at is that simply measuring your head may not guarantee a proper fitting as the video kind of purports. It's a starting point but not a guarantee the helmet will fit or feel good on the users head. This is one of those things you absolutely need to try before you buy given the importance of the equipment.
LOL.. Jay, yes the chewy nougat centre ! Nice analogy there.
Man, excellent video Jay! Been riding for years and never knew! I'm glad that we still have companies that believe in safety over profit! As you..., I simply cannot understand why someone would not want to wear a full face helmet but to everyone their own :)
Oh they make plenty of profit. But I dont begrudge it to them.. Arai all the way. My son, my wife, myself all wear proper fitted Arai. Proper fitted is the key, and Arai is the only one that fits my elongated fat head...
Jay Leno is in need of a helmet that is denim-colored..
Excuse me, but you are wrong sir. YOU should make THEM watch this video when they are selling you an helmett.
Massive crash after front brake locked on racing motocross. Head first on to hardpack. I was out for the count but it could have been so much worse. Stayed in Arai ever since.
dude says a helmet was TOO BIG for his head, that is hilarious.... i always forget hes a pretty good comedian lol
Hi Mr. What helmet color do you recommend from Arai Corsair x white or black thank you.
TL;DR Buy only from acclaimed manufacturers, measure circumference in inch *and* cm around the forehead and occipital ridge, and try on three distinctly *shaped* helmets like Signet-Q, RX-Q and Corsair if only as shape benchmarks
As a firefighter who's seen and treated more than one head impact crash, I recommend you only buy from acclaimed manufacturers. If it's one you haven't heard of and it's DOT only, avoid it. Here's some of the ones I can think of off the top of my head that I know wouldn't skimp on testing and wouldn't skimp on construction
Arai, Shoei, Bell, Icon (Only if it says ECE), Biltwell, Shark, AGV, Schuberth, Scorpion, HJC, Kabuto. There's likely some others but those are the ones off the top of my head, at least for street. You can add Fox, AFX, and Fly for sure off-road. Make sure you read the manufacturer literature on what they try to go for for their entire like (Icon goes for ECE, for example) before you buy a brand, because you may by buying an under-certified knock-off. Also, see what others have said about their crash resistance before you buy, if it's been on the market for more than one season.
For measurement, ask for a tape measure both inch and cm and measure around the forehead and occipital ridge which is the widest part, then try on a Signet Q (Long Oval), an RX-Q (Intermediate Round), and one of their other helmets (Intermediate oval) or shoei's equivalents to determine your rough head shape. You might not be trying to buy one of those but they are good benchmarks to determine where to go next. Also don't mind the cheekpad tightness, that'll compress after some riding and become more comfortable
+hvymtal Thanks bro, its good to get advice from someone who actually knows what he's talking about.
+hvymtal Great info
hvymtal Scratch ICON off your list for anything. The ICON brand is owned by Parts Unlimited and are only intended as a money maker for PU. They are very cheaply made, as is their clothing. Sure, they might make a few things well, but there is no hiding the cost cutting. I manage a motorcycle gear store and have for many years. If you truly value your head, buy the best. Arai and Shoei. If Arai is good enough for 200 mph professional circuit racers and Isle of Man competitors, then it should be good enough for the rest of us. They dont wear ICON. They wear Arai helmets and Dainese and Alpinestars leathers as the standard.
Also clarification: I recommend avoiding unknown DOT only because independent testing is not required by the DOT standard despite the fact that it is very intensive and encompassing whereas it is for ECE and Snell, both even more intensive. If it says ECE, it will work unless its defective, which is impossibly unlikely and your bills will get paid for you if it is
You're the best car guy ever, Jay! Thanks for communicating so thoughtfully to your fans!
Every Time I get mad about surviving a crash and having to cough up for another Corsair I can just watch this now and smile. Three in one year was bad but I'm still at it. make a move. Buddy of mine is an EMT. came up on a bike wreck where two young kids crashed. Girl had on an Icon brainsaver, guy was wearing Arai. Guy was ALOC and talking to him, and sadly he gave his old junk made in china by a clothing marketer helmet to his now dead women. Think about that when you cheap out on some made in china cheap lid. They are a Helmet manufacturer and that's all they do. As much as the shield can frustrate me sometimes, they are also the most comfortable to ride in. Arai all the way man. Awesome and totally worth it man. Thanks Arai
+Scoty Duc Ati Every Crash is different and without knowing details, we can't conclude that if she had an ARAI or other top tier helmet that she would still be alive (or what condition of that icon helmet was when she went down). ..That being said , I would rather crash in any number of top tier racing helmets than an Icon if i knew my time was up.
+Scoty Duc Ati Being a firefighter EMT i can say for certain that after SNELL or ECE cert all the extra money does for you is comfort. I've treated someone going down in an RX-Q and a Icon Airmada in direct frontal head impacts around 50-ish impact speed (one hit a car going 30 in a school zone -- prosecuted -- other was highway rear-ender dismount only -- thank god -- due to emergency braking). They both were conscious throughout and were out of hospital in two weeks, though the cheekpad pull straps on the arai were nice. I do recommend buying ECE or SNELL helmets since they are independently tested. If you're going DOT only, only do it from large manufacturers like bell with much to lose if they skimp on testing, those who buy bargain-bin or non-acclaimed-manufacturer helmets will have much longer stays in a similar crash
iTheGeek I wear icon as a matter of fact. Its all about whether its authentic, fits correctly, prior impacts, accident variables, etc. You could be wearing a $2,000 custom fit carbon fiber Bell Star and it wouldn't make an end difference if the impact speed is 150 mph whereas a $120 DOT Helmet will survive a pretty good impact.
Statement of fact: Check sharp helmet tests; Arai does poorly considering how much their products cost (side impact is the Achilles heel). Everyone should consult the data for helmet purchases if its available.
Personal statement: I will buy a bell race star before another arai at the same price-point because of new technology addressing rotational energy management which is leading factor for concussions.
chris s Same. I'm likely going to buy an HJC RPHA-11 as my next over an RX-Q for several reasons. I found the HJC no less comfortable, you don't have to pay $60 extra for a fucking visor (and it comes with a dark one in the box), it vents better than an RX-Q, you don't have to pay $100 more for graphics (and the graphics so far are better IMO) and even the price is significantly less for an ECE and DOT helmet. No it doesn't cert to snell but you will likely not get hassled on tracks over helmet certs once you point out that MotoGP allows helmets that are ECE but not snell :P
And I was going to toss my 1 year old full face after a few drops. Now its going to be passengers gear. :)
I'm still using my Arai XXL Quantum e from 1997. I'm now about to order my correct L Signet Q for my freakishly long oval head. I always had to go XXL before so my noggin would fit in the thing front to back, but it was always too loose on the sides and I always got the same pushing back on my face thing at speed. Arai's are a substantial percentage of the cost of a whole motorcycle, but also the most personal piece of safety gear you can own, so for me I've got to have the best even if it'll take a few payments.
You should really consider replacement every 4 or 5 years.
EthanKRETA Yeah, what I have a problem with is that would be about what I pay for insurance on the bike. As of right now I'll stretch it a few, still better than not wearing one.
Photo314159 "The most personal piece of safety gear ", but your helmet is from 1997? You aren't really the authority on giving advice on helmet safety, are you? It's like Ray Rice lecturing about not hitting women.
If you read what I wrote I didn't give advice to anybody. I simply stated what I do. My new Arai fits perfectly though, thanks for your concern.
Each company caters to specific head shapes. Have you tried a Schuberth? Not knocking Arai, but getting the best possible fit is important. I put one on and the sky opened up and little angels came down with harps and trumpets. Great fit.
Looking forward to checking a few bra sizes! lol
Must admit though I have been using a Large up to now(lid not bra!) but my new Arai is a medium and fits perfectly.
Jay's guest must feel a great sense of purpose and satisfaction knowing he saves lives every day.
lol chewy nugat center
i can listen to that helmet guy all day long.
Riding without a helmet doesn't make sense to me at all also! I hate riding in a hawaiian island drizzle that feels like rocks hitting my face and the wind blowing my ear buds right out right after shoving them as deep as I could have a second ago! I just bought the japanese spec Arai RX-7x for $500, it's an instant savings of $250 just without the DOT stamp. A good helmet is a good helmet. $100 helmets are DOT stamped and they're horrible.... DOT is just a scam.
This year marks 20 years of riding, and I've had Arai helmets since the beginning. Very happy to see you spreading the importance of a properly fitted quality product! They've saved my life a couple times, that's priceless.
I have both Arai and Shoei. Both excellent helmets. Fit is slightly different. If not for the difficulty of removing and replacing the Arai shield, I would consider the Arai again. Not that I feel any superiority in Arai. Just another choice is nice. The Shoei gives up nothing compared to Arai. Both excellent. The Arai shield removal process is nothing short of magic puzzle to solve, and NOT close to the ease of a Shoei shield. So being they are both excellent helmets, I see no reason to purchase Arai. Sure the salesman can do it lickety split. they've showed me more than once. Try it yourself! You'll see. Shoei for me.
I find it difficult to believe, Jay is a large. But maybe his head is more long face than big head?
just got a scorpion exo t1200, cheek pads have a built in pump, no swapping needed
everss02 That's called "How to make money off a cheap helmet". If air bladders worked, Shoei and Arai would use it. Scorpions are middle of the road, at best.
Very informative video, getting the right size is the most important aspect of buying a helmet..
I survived a horrendous motorcycle accident, thanks to my Arai..
I've been wearing Arai for the past twelve years but their production is still a year behind due to shut downs from during the pandemic. I wasn't able to get a style I wanted so I decided to give AGV a chance. I'll share my thoughts on my channel next week
What do you think, "Jay Leno's Infomercial" or "Ron Popeil's Garage"?
I'm glad I watched this because I'm looking for my first bike. I will be sure to get my helmet properly fitted. Thanks!
Remember they will break in too, so a little tight in helmet and leather gear is the best way to go. If you start loose it will stay loose. Leather and padding will let go a bit.
6:30 the guy hits his head on every single surface . tarmac. grass. front. back. visor. crown. cheeks. arai is amazing
the way the guy disassemble the helmet. that moment i really believe he can disassemble and assemble single handedly blind folded in under a minute or half a minute
I have been riding 37 years and this is a very informative video.
I was down with everything he said until he started talking about "distracted riding from bluetooth". I cant wait to get a Arai and put a blue tooth in!!! Try going for a five hundred mile ride with wind noise and a screaming bike without music the entire time, or no means communication, unless you pull over of course. Or how about when your riding in a group, you see an upcoming hazard, and your cringing cuz you have no real way of warning your buddy of the danger. Ya...I'm pro-bluetooth all the way!
Probably not a good idea for a beginner rider though?
I think if more people that are riding together can talk to each other in real time so they can warn of dangers ahead lives will be saved but that is just my thoughts. It is hands free so concentration is not a problem, and it would be great if companies like arai would build helmets already set up for it.
jamespriceful Plenty of companies make helmets ready for bluetooth devices, I know the Shoei RF1200, quest, x12 all have spots for your speakers. My Arai RXQ on the other hand does not. There are helmets with bluetooth devices built in already as well such as "Bilt" branded ones. Bluetooth is just like anything really, it's good if used correctly/safely. Someone blasting music at full volume is not going to hear ambient noise well. And most devices such as Sena still need hand contact to function, esp my Sena 10c which is pratically Morse code to move through functions. I do enjoy being able to talk to people while on my commute though.
+Mk2Mike I was looking at a Arai Signet Q today and in the cheek pad there was a spot with foam you could remove and place a speaker. You had to take the cover off the cheek pad and it was kind of nestled into the styrofoam.
xex2kok yes, I actually did that on my Arai RXQ, I pulled back the cheek pad cover and placed it on the foam in the ear cup, works great
Akano's crash was one of the worst I've ever seen. This was a great video.
Perfect for earthquake country. Also just the thing for mowing the lawn in coco- nut country.
4:34 "i still have my chin..." Jay probably had his chin insured for a million bucks. That's an iconic chin.
I have a arai quart helmet and they are high quality, well made, and very comfy !
They are great !
My axces-3 is the best helmet i've ever owned bar none. I've had 3 other helmets, 2 Shark, 1 Nolan. My Shark Spartan was actually too large and in general didnt fit my head that well. Shark didn't make any different sized liners at all so i made the decision to go with a company with the pedigree to really support my riding and to reinforce a feeling of safety that i want from a motorcycle helmet. I don't think i'll ever go to another brand, Arai is the best of the best.
Jay wears a Medium sized helmet with an XXXL chin bar!
Nice job. Informative. Thanks.
Arai is an amazing and excellent helmet company based out of Japan. They are high quality! They also make helmets for auto racing drivers in Formula One (F1), Indy Car, Nascar, Le Mans etc.
The Arai face shield mechanism is crap... it's a great helmet, but the face shield capture and mounting method is poo. Changing face shields is difficult, and you can end up breaking the mechanism. Shoei has a better shield mech.
Changing the face shied on a Arai helmet it easy!
I prefer it over any other Helmet.
It all comes down to practise and once you perfect it no other
Visor system stacks up.
AGRO! The Arai visor has no molded part to the mechanism... the shield is cheaper, since it is only a cut piece. The mechanism used to mount it has to be more complex because of this. The Shoei shield has a molded-in pivot... it is much easier to work. I've owned several Arais and they always have shield problems... great helmets otherwise. The Shoei shield can be changed while wearing gloves... no practice necessary. The Arai mechanism is fragile... the Shoei is robust. I don't wear helmets anymore anyway, but when I do pay money for one, it'll be a Shoei.
scowell Mate I have never had any problems with the Arai mechanism.
Its funny to read other dudes having problems but for me its great.
I also have a Shoei NXR and to me its heaps faster changing the Arai face shield.
Also you should wear a helmet even if its a open face helmet but its your choice.
+scowell I Think the shield swaps are really fast and easy with their mechanism. I'm just not completely sold on the crash protection /hype after witnessing crashes on track and seeing test results from SHARP.
+scowell The Arai mechanism is designed to be as strong as possible to avoid visor failure in a crash, My bell star visor snapped right off when I highsided at a track day where as my arai has never failed me yet even after rolling and draging my head at around 150mph...It isn't designed to be convenient but the new Corsair X is much easier to swap visors...
Why aren't you talking about the different SHAPES of the rider's head. The Signet is good for those with a tall, narrow shaped head ("All American, bullet headed Saxon mother's son,) whereas the Quantum is better for those with a round head (Charlie Brown.) Arai has that covered too.
@6:45: Holy shit, the number of times his head hits the ground is almost comical. :O Great video!
After dropping my Arai Corsair X off my bike on the curb, assumed its damaged. Bought another Corsair X two weeks ago to just find this video where Arai Rep. confirms helmet is good if dropped off the bike. FML that was an expensive mistake ))))
An Arai Wes Cooley signature series saved my life in a motorcycle accident where a pick-up truck ran a stop sign, i never remember seeing it. i was doing 45-50 mph. he kept going, but turned himself in 6 hours later.
Every time he did something to that helmet I thought I had bumped the fast forward.
Was doing around 200mph before he caught a wobble and lost it. Probably 190 after the wobble(Either way...He was catapulted off of a bike that was doing near suicidal speeds). To survive that without losing consciousness or having a massive concussion is impressive.
i always wondered about dropping helmut from the seat.
I love my Arai, and I'm pretty sure it fits properly but would be nice to have an expert confirm. I just wish they'd do a transitions shield instead of that funky clear with a half-smoke thing.
Jays chin hangs out of every helmet I have seen him wear and now he's going smaller. A full face on Jay is really considered an open face
Statement of fact: Check sharp helmet tests.. Arai does poorly considering how much their products cost (side impact is the Achilles heel on tested products) .Everyone should consult data for helmet purchases if its available.
Still not letting us know which size to buy. If measuring your head isn’t definitive, then how do we know which size to buy? Especially if head size is between two sizes.
come on jay, you cant afford an hd camera? whats up with the 480p?
I think some of these videos are pre-mass HD video. That GSX-R is from 2009, I think. They're probably re-uploaded.
I don’t think the marshals were treating that guy’s head appropriately. lol. Any doctor let alone a spinal surgeon would have been grimacing watching that.
For the price Arai is charging on their helmets, $600 - $1000 they should send this guy to everybody that buy their helmet to make sure the helmet fit.
Thanks Mr L a useful film and documented proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks ( me that is) - I've resized my lid following this ( saving up for an Arai now!)
You're joking right? You NEVER move the persons neck or yank a helmet off like they did, it can cause irreversible damage to the spine (paralyzed). The snug fit they were talking about could also be a bad thing because if someone pulls it off like they did in this video that could break the spine the last little bit since it may already be damaged. That's why they usually cut off the helmet, they do that for a reason, not for shits n' giggles.
8 out of 10 people spend too much money for a helmet when they choose Arai.
Something to consider: These top expensive brands design their helmets for racers going up to 200mph, which means they need really stiff styrofoam inside to absorb the impact before your head hits the shell. Thus when you crash at a normal speed, that styrofoam barely crushes at all and your head takes a much harder impact than a cheaper helmet designed for normal speed.
You know I dont need or want a bike that goes over 140 or 130. I love the looks and simplicity (just like my cars) of older bikes such as the Indians, Harley's and Triumphs and the old bobbers or board track racers etc. So instead of making these high power, lean forward, plastic covered bike, give me a mechanical sounding high torque sweet sounding bike that looks like the originals, update what needs to be to pass and keep the skinny tires and wire wheels and I guarantee it it will sell.
Jay,being a female car nut,I must tell you,the correct bra size is important both men & women. I mean it chafes under the arm or binds the shoulders & just generally irritates me. Trust me,an irritated wife isn't going to be happy with her husband spending time & money on cars. See,the correct bra size is important to the guys too. :) lol Great vid Jay!! Safety is important. Glad to see you promoting safety & proper fitting bras.
I was just at the motorcycle shop and new Arai helmets (Signet-X) come in 4 difference oval shapes for the same style to get the one that fits your head best.
10% with correct size? I still see most motorcycle riders without a helmet, even on the highway. Then the few that do wear a helmet probably have the wrong size. I wish I could stop and ask everyone of them why they don't wear a helmet. Helmets on bikes should be treated the same as seatbelts but it seems like no one cares as much.
I have never seen a helmet dealer with alternative sized liners. If I want thicker or thinner cheekpads or liner, I have a o order them myself and take my chances. I was always told that I my scalp needed to move a little bit with the liner. Shape is another big issue for me. It took a long time to find helmets that were the shape of my head.
That was the worse EMS care of a patient with a high likely hood of cervical injury I've ever seen.
Yeah, I got to make it so I can use my phone why I am riding, and my MP3 player, and my Walkie Talkie , so I can talk to the other riders, and my GPS, and my Charger.
Nah, I just need a bike and a good old trusty helmet to keep the bugs and rocks from hitting me in the eye.
this is the reason why jay's chin is outside his helmet in all the other videos
yes, I am a helmet person, let those who don't want anything between their head and the ground do so at their own risk. Just look at that biker crashing again. You will NOT be able to stop yourself from hitting your head going that fast.
Oh, did I mention how stable and controlled you feel at 190mph with an Arai versus anything else I've owned (Shoei, HJC, Shark etc).
I guess I'm lucky because all the years I rode with a full face helment the size was correct. Even though I sweated all over the inside of it during the summer, the snug fit always made me feel safe, and anyway, the helmet innards in the better ones are washable and dry out very quickly. Another great, and possibly life saving video. Thanks Jay!
1 out of 10 people? bad statistics. Just make a lot of this thing, cheap and fit guide for free.
So pretty much buying an Arai online makes absolutely no sense. Go get fitted with one.
Bought a Shoei RF-1200 that is SLIGHTLY too big but still pretty snug enough for me to have confidence that it won't come off in a crash.
GT6SuzukaTimeTrials Then it's not a good fit. "Good enough" is awesome standing in your room. Try it at 80mph and physics will alter your "slightly too big", and not in a good way.
Great segment, Jay. It is amazing how little motorcyclists know about helmets!
This type of helmets are too damn expensive! I have a shoie Paid almost 650$. Granted it’s comfty. I slso purchased a 85$ helmet and I love that helmet as much as the shoie. I believe that a well fit full face helmet will keep you safer than a expensive helmet
Where do you go to get custom fits with measurements and all? I am Socal.
This is GREAT info!
Maybe Jay could let the guy finish talking before he cuts him off!!!!
COOL Arai Helmets - Jay Leno's Garage
I have tryed the best shoi bells ect ect helmets Nothing Touches an Arai.. Its not even close.. Aria is king shit. helmet.
Notice when they showed the race video, the geniuses pulled off his helmet, NEVER pull of someones helmet who's crashed.
I don't like helmets that are loose, it feels that the strap is the only thing keeping it on if I move my head fast.
Omg why u talk over everyone jay staph
Watching september 2019 ☝️☝️
Good thing Bruce did not wrap his tape to measure your head Jay he would have run out with plenty more to go
It is strange that they didn't talk about the Signet Q sizing and different head shapes. I went from an XL to a large and got rid of a lot of forehead pain. The Q changed my whole outlook on wearing helmets. Now, if only ARAI would male a dual purpose helmet with the Signet Q sizing, that would be perfect.
You CAN wash any helmet by removing the cardboard bits (my helmet was not made in Japan) and then submerging the entire thing in water and squeezing the foam pads and dunking repeatedly. Also, noise at speed is caused by buffeting at the gap between the riders neck and the helmet. Helmet shape means nothing compared to this. Obviously correct fit is important for this reason also.
Rather see some wrong size bra's Jay........ Depends when they almost get a mind on their own feel like jumping out, I d like that. Don't want to insult but the bra size is somewhat more interesting than your head in a helmet ;) . OK! Seriously a right size helmet is really important think about your loved ones when you buy one.
To be honest by throwing the Homo reference out there you were asking for some kind of reply. I don't let internet trolling bother me the way others do. I love Jay's extreme interest in cars and mechanical things in general. In no way was I insulting Jay or his video series. I just wanted to point out that he could have used Bruce's knowledge to a much greater extent in the time allowed.
Man, I see why they named you pesky. I think you misunderstood me. I was simply saying that it was amazing that cops would ride without a helmet, ever.
And that I am amazed that I never crashed during all of those years before the helmet law. I Thank God that I did not crash during those years. Pesk, no one wore a helmet back then! I would freak out if I had to ride without a helmet now.
“Motorcyclist fired me-because Arai and Shoei didn’t like a helmet-standards piece I wrote for the New York Times,” Dexter Ford told us.
Ford wrote for The New York Times entitled “Sorting Out Differences in Helmet Standards,” which was published on September 25, 2009. In that article, Ford writes that buyers who want to avoid confusion over helmet standards and find a helmet that’s been tested to work with an appropriate weight head can, “simply choose a non-Snell-rated helmet.”
I've been lucky enough to crash a few times over the years and walk away from each. I dumped a friend's GSXR600 race bike at Hampton Downs at well over 200kph; sore, but no brain injury. Alpinestars protected my ass, Dianese protected my back and chest (except a rib or two) - but my Arai RX7RR protected my head. Thank you Arai, if you saw the damage to my lid and everything else, you'd immediately understand why these are worth the money they cost. The bike was fucked, sorry Lance :)
I know it looks cooler to wear the little Harley open face helmet and have the wind in your face and all that but just look at the consequences if you wreck. I was at this music festival awhile back and a lot of bikers are there every year. I was sitting next to some of them eating my gumbo and this big biker dude walked up to the group and half his head was bandaged. He didn't wreck! after being asked...HE HIT A FREAKING BIRD WITH HIS FACE WHILE DOING 70 lol. Now thats reason enough for me.
Interesting comments, people totally miss the point. The video is about the fact that the guy didn't lose consciousness after getting his head beat around like that. (Everyone knows not to remove someones helmet after an accident.) The gentleman said, fitting "starts" with a measurement, he didn't say it was the "end all". I have been riding for over forty years, before full face existed. I used Bell, & Simpson's before Arai, Arai are the best, and snug is MORE COMFORTABLE.
