    If Gibson is going to vacate the $1000-1700 price range as Lee hinted, they need to do more than just put Gibson pickups in an Epiphone in order to ask those prices. I have always seen a noticeable difference in quality from Chinese-made to Indonesian/Korean-made instruments and there is far better value out there for less.

    Great video! I’d love to go to the Gibson Garage, but I’m in a wheelchair thesr days and I’d have a hard time dealing with the stairs. They’ve sure got some cool guitars, though! I used to live in Nashville back in thr late ‘70s, and there was nothing like the Garage then. I probably walked past the location hundreds of times-I was gigging at night and doing part-time sales at a small music store on Lower Broadway a few days a week. (Anybody remember Wes Holland Music?)
    The guitars in the Vault at the Garage were amazing! The Trini Lopez prototype was really cool-I’ve never seen that flat inline headstock on any other Gibson. In case you’re wondering, Trini Lopez was a Latino singer and guitarist who had great success in the ‘60s, doing Latin-rock versions of folk songs. Good singer and good rhythm guitarist. I understand the second switch on his signature guitar was so he could turn the guitar off to avoid feedback while he was clapping his hands over his head, which he did a lot. Anyway-cool vid, even if there was too much emphasis on Les Pauls! Gibson makes other models too, and SGs and 335s sort of got short shrift. And I can’t wait to see what’s coming from Epiphone-they’ve been doing some cool stuff lately.

Played so many different guitars, fell in love with several of them, wish I could have bought one back (more than one), staff were super helpful, and the conveyor was mind boggling. Hit Gruhns and Carters the following day, followed by Guthrie Trapp at the Underdog. Add in the mind boggling live music scene on Lower Broadway and side streets and you have guitar heaven. Can't wait to go back!!

    The store video was fun, the vault was cool; but I appreciated the opportunity to here from Aljon the most. Personally, I understand why the current crop of Inspired by Gibson Custom Shop is in the price range it is. Is it too expensive? That's up to each person to decide for themselves. For me personally, It is a bit too expensive but I wish them the best because having more options has never hurt the customer.... except in their ability to decide what is right for them.

    Loved the epiphone segment; It's unfortunate that Gibson shot themselves in the foot by creating such a stigma around the brand being designated to cheap copies for beginners and hobbyists because they could improve tenfold and I still would not want to be caught dead with one in a professional setting. And contrary to the whole branding price justification thing, Gibson is still making barebones no-binding satin finish guitars but they are $1400 instead of $500 like used to in only 2014.

      If im not mistaken Epiphone has models in various price ranges including the ones people keep saying" They used to be X price". They are adding higher tier models that are more expensive but i have not seen them remove their more affordable models.

      @@506thLittleberry I mean even in 2014 when i bought my Epiphone Silverburst Custom Pro it was $799. So that price hasnt changed. Im sure if you go farther back in time the cost has gone up but how much of that is attributed to inflation?

    • @506thLittleberry
      @506thLittleberry 9 месяцев назад

      @@XLTBlarg I'm not exactly sure about the inflation. I bought an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Chrome Edition in 2009 for like 750 bucks. It's just weird to me seeing the regular Epi Customs so high in the price range when they used to be mid-tier priced as far as Epiphone guitars went. Of course they still had signature guitars and special editions that were more expensive than that.

    • @XLTBlarg
      @XLTBlarg 9 месяцев назад

      @@506thLittleberry First of all I would love to see a picture of that guitar it sounds SICK! But secondly the Custom Pro models are still in the $799 price range but are always on sale at most guitar stores I shop.
      The Inspired by Gibson 59 les pauls are like $100 more expensive but they also have the Gibson Burstbucker pickups instead of the Epiphone custom buckers so it seems like a fair price to me.
      Alot of these signature models are probably overinflated in price, but for the most part Epiphones mainline product stack seems reasonably priced to me for what you get at each jump in price point.

    6:30 I couldn’t imagine paying $1,500-$2,000 for an epiphone. To say that’s going to be the new normal is insane to me. If i’m paying 2k I want it to be american made. American made guitars generally feel and play better compared to their cheaper made counterparts aka Epiphone. But now it seems their “cheaper made” counterparts, aren’t going to cheap at all. I’ll never pay $1,500-$2,000 for an over sea’s made epiphone.

  • @DarrenJohnson1973
    @DarrenJohnson1973 10 месяцев назад +2

    I strongly disagree with any comment holding the quality and craftsmanship of epiphone in any high regard, Earlier this year I bought a Inspired by Gibson J45 and compared to the Gibson and Gibson Custom Shop guitars the set up and quality of fret finishing meant the guitar was unplayable, normally I do my own setups but the brand new IBG was so poorly manufactured that I had to then spend 25% on top of the retail price to get a talented luthier repair a bran new epiphone guitar, Lee Anderton is a deluded idiot to think any one with a shred of cognitive reasoning is going to pay 1600 quid for the crap that consistently comes out of the Epiphone factory made by a low paid workforce that are there to earn food token for their family and don’t give a crap about someone buying it several 1000 miles away, but if Lee wants to make braindead suggestions to manufactures to make things more expensive for the customer carry on….his 5 year business plan obviously is that in years he wants to be claiming universal credit It’s no wonder that after my 1st experience of ordering from Andertons back in 2017 its not my 1st port of call and only use them if everywhere else is out of stock and cant get stock in time The IBG J45 was not bought from Andertons.

    06:35 - Lee really hates the Gibson Faded, Worn, and Studio series guitars.
    48:46 - Lee really REALLY hates the Gibson Faded, Worn and Studio ranges…
    Myself and many other guitarists fondly remember utilizing Gibson guitars from these ranges as young guitar players, and they were an excellent starting point for what became a lifelong Gibson player.
    Without the Faded series, the Worn series, and the Studios, I don’t think most people will settle for an Epiphone. And this is coming from someone who’s first guitar was an Epiphone.
    There just isn’t a comparison between an affordable Gibson and a high-end Epi.
    Bad move if Gibson tries to force players that would normally buy a cheap Gibson to buy an Epiphone…

    I suspect this is part of a long term strategy.
    Increase the price of Epiphone, so that the price of Gibson USA can be increased to maintain price gap which in turn justifies the increase in custom shop.
    Leave the lower end of the market to other import brands.
    Become more of a status brand with custom shop being like the Ferrari or Lamborghini of the guitar world.
    Used prices of Gibson and Epiphone will eventually follow.

    A LOT of comments seem to be very confused about what Epiphone are doing. Guys, you can still pick up an Epiphone Les Paul standard or an Epiphone SG standard for £500.
    However, in addition to the 'usual' Epiphone fare they've started to offer a bit more. The models might still be made in China, but depending on the models they now include things like Gibson custom shop pick ups, or switch craft components etc. The luthier I take my guitars to tells me that Epiphone QC at the moment is spot on, and hasn't everyone been moaning about Gibson QC for a few years?!
    More choice for different budgets can't be a bad thing surely?

We have got Gibson, already too expensive, even for an LP Standard, we have got Epiphone that is now raipidly heading toward $2k, and.... Well, not much else! Where is the "budget" Gibson today? Epiphone are it! Buy an Epiphone copy of a Gibson Sig for more than, for example, a Gibson SG! So, a Chinese build Epi more expesive than a US made Gibson? Watch out Gibson, you are headed down a rabbit hole that is going to result in yet another corporate disaster!

    If they would brand the Epiphone headstock with the Gibson name I promise they’d sell 10x more epi’s. Just do what PRS does with their SE line and still have the main logo with a more subtle indication that it’s an epi.

    Everything Gibson make is way over priced! They are just greedy for money! You can buy a much better guitar for less money! I'm glad that I bought my Gibson's when I did. As I'd never be able to afford them now. And why aren't they making the USA standard Firebird's? Why did Mesa Boogie stop selling their amps in England? I've had my Mess Boogie since 2011, and I didn't know that they hadn't sold any here for 5 years?

    Just visited the Gibson Garage and one of the sales guys very kindly took me back to the vault after commenting about the lack of any exhibits on the history of Gibson. Last year was the centenary of the historic L-5 archtop, arguably the single most influential Gibson model -- there may have never been a Les Paul model without it. Lee really needs to do some homework if he doesn't know who Lloyd Loar is. I'm truly shocked. (And if he only knows D'Angelico from the current company that took his name that would be pathetic...)

    Many thanks, Lee & Pete. Even though I live in America (St Augustine, Florida), I have always watched your videos (for the last 10 years) to learn the facts and your seasoned opinions on guitars and the things they use to make tone. As soon as I finished watching your NAMM video on the Epiphone 59 Les Paul Standard Outfit, I ordered one (and got it 10 months later) and have not regretted it. It is great that Gibson and Epiphone have finally figured out a logical order of ownership progression between their two product lines. Who knows--they may even develop an attractive customer-for-life progression. I'll be watching for my next guitar through Andertons. Thanks again and Happy New Year to everyone there. Cheers.

    I'm not a fan of Flying V's at all. It's only been recently that I've developed a hankering for an SG. My favorite would be an Oxblood Les Paul. I lean more toward Fender guitars.

    As somebody that literally JUST got their Epiphone Adam Jones...I'm a little sad it doesn't have a Gibson headstock now. Regardless, if this guitar and Greeny are the implications of where Epiphone products are heading I think this is going to be a golden era for them

      I picked up the Epi Korina Explorer and it’s one of the best guitars I’ve ever played. I’ve owned a fist full of Gibsons and Epiphones, even played 50s Les Paul’s before and the higher end Epi’s are absolutely stellar. I’m so stoked to see them making beautiful, high quality instruments.
