Been meaning to try my hand at this one for a long time, and finally decided to do it after sitting on it for so long!
The Metal Gear series holds a special place in my heart. It's an utterly ridiculous military fantasy, yet at the same time a thoughtful meditation on the endless cycle of violence. A plot with a timeline so nonsensical you'd need a cartographer to chart it, but with storied moments so brilliant you'd weather the most inane plot twist just to see what happens next. A series with overblown dramatics and macho men chewing the scenery with shouts of "BROTHEEEEEEEEEEEEEER~", but also with quietly beautiful moments, "This is good... isn't it?".
It constantly breaks the fourth wall, and yet maintains a level of integrity in spite (or because?) of that. It has a silly bikini booby lady sniper, but also has some of the best and well-written women characters in gaming history. The Metal Gear saga is a juvenile, mad, balls-to-the-walls crazy thing; yet also a completely sincere and articulate piece of art. I will miss it greatly. And I look forward to your m!preg Norman Reedus project, Kojima!

Ironically I think Venom understood The Boss’ true intentions without even meeting her. The Boss knew she’d be branded a traitor and set up to be killed when the virtuous mission went south, yet she stayed loyal knowing history will remember her as a traitor that almost brought the world to Nuclear war, but she never cared for what everyone thought as long as her actions were meaningful and carried on. Venom knew that he would have to become a demon, that his true intentions, his real identity will be erased and forgotten, but he didn’t care what everyone thought all that mattered was the goal of protecting the legend, making the ultimate sacrifice of walking the path of damnation.

@sasaki999pro I respect Kojima and I do feel bad about how things between him and Konami ended, but I have to agree with you here. My problem isn't with Kiefer Sutherland, I actually thought he was great. He has always been one of my favorite voices in the industry ever since I saw Phone Booth. My problem is the same problem you had, and that was the mistreatment of David Hayter. From what I understand, David and Kojima never really got along to begin with. I heard that he was going to have Naked Snake voiced by Kurt Russell at one point, but hired David again only because that plan didn't go through. Konami didn't even give him a call when MGS5 was announced. I had this all planned out, but if I had been the voice director for MGS5, I would have done things differently. First of all, Ground Zeroes would have been voiced entirely by David Hayter since that's the confirmed Big Boss. However when we transition into Phantom Pain, Kiefer will step in as the main VO for both Ahab and Ishmael just like in the base game. However, when we replay the flashback mission at the end of the game, Ishmael's message to Ahab will play before the recap. Only this time, Ishmael will be voiced by David Hayter for both the message and the replay. That way, the twist will still be effective and the reveal of David will have much more impact. Therefore we have the best of both worlds with both Kiefer and David in a way that actually makes sense. Unfortunately, I am not Kojima and I couldn't make this happen :(

Paramedic, Venom, big boss... He was a good soldier, a hero, a friend, a person and perhaps even a "weapon". In the entire history of the game, I began to sympathize with him the most, because he was once a person, his life was taken away and made of him a goal that half the world wants to kill. He had two personalities in his head, his own and the Boss, but the most important thing was that he had to relive those memories that it hurts to remember. I know that according to the story, he became a bad guy and had to be killed, but think about it, it's just a script. His story could have been much better without a sad ending. He could not become evil, but be the hero of those "diamond dogs". But alas, if Kajima likes to write sad endings so much, so be it. Rest in peace, Venom, I hope all your heroic deeds will outweigh the cup of sins.

Yeah this is totally in my headcanon now.
It's also all the more bittersweet when you think of how Venom and Big Boss differ in character. Venom was "Loyal to the end", as was Solid. Big Boss manipulated his best man for his own selfish desire. I do think Big Boss did care for Venom to a degree, but in the end; Venom was an excellent pawn in Big Boss's game.
Venom went out of his way to eliminate the threat of nukes to the best of his ability of his own accord. He was merciful to his enemies and wildlife, but an excellent soldier. While I don't think we see enough of the real Big Boss as a villain, I can't see him being as caring as his body double. Double crosses his own men (Venom and Kaz being the big ones) just to protect his own ass.
Shame the better "Big Boss" had died. Actually here's a theory; what if the "Big Boss" ranking for no kills, no alerts, ect shown in MGS1, 2 and 4 and such was inspired from the deeds of Venom, not the actual Big Boss?

    • @narutardkyuubi
      @narutardkyuubi 6 лет назад +32

That is the implication, yeah. It’s hinted that Venom is, ironically enough, the more benevolent of the two Big Bosses by TPP. Despite the whole revenge motive, he really does show care to others and fundamental humanity.
I recall an analysis (can’t find the link), between Skullface and Venom. Despite Skullface’s shared history with Naked Snake, he has a lot more in common with Venom. They both lost their faces and identity against their will (Venom was in an induced coma and couldn’t consent to that procedure), both become leaders of legally dubious PMCs, both bonded to Psycho Mantis and, subsequently, the Man of Fire, both employed Huey, Quiet, and Code Talker, and made use of Sahelanthropus and both were assigned to follow Big Boss.
At the same time, Venom could never be Skullface; Skullface ruthlessly uses Quiet and Code Talker with threats and manipulation, whereas Venom treats them humanely, and earns their respect. Skullface chose to go into the darker aspects of espionage and wet work, and Venom was originally a medic who dedicated his life to saving others.

Honestly, Solid beating Venom perfectly encapsulates why Solid is the best Snake. The Boss knew that soldiers were merely political tools, nothing more than expendable bodies for politicians and warmongers to toss at each other. Venom Snake _embodies_ this: even when he learned he had his past _and_ future robbed and forced to be Big Boss' phantom, he still did his best to play the role and help build a nation of soldiers, even dying at the end for the sake of soldiers without borders.
    *_Solid Snake says "screw that"._*
Unlike Venom or even Big Boss, Solid understood the _deeper_ meaning of The Boss' will without even knowing the woman; to pursue a world where _PEOPLE,_ not soldiers, live without boundaries. As much of a legendary soldier she was, The Boss _always_ fought and acted for peace - yes, she was a soldier, but one who gave her life in an attempt to unite the world and _AVOID_ global catastrophe. While Big Boss' and Venom Snake's goal of creating a nation for soldiers unbound by cultural limits seems admirable, they still fought to spread violence and weaponry and stole uncountable human lives, something that The Boss wouldn't approve of. Furthermore, MGS1 and MGS2's entire themes _REVOLVE_ around the ideal of being your own person; that people don't need to be defined by their genetics or the ideas shoved on them by others. Whereas Big Boss enforces that Venom now carries his legacy and persona, Solid Snake _implores_ Raiden to be his own man and determine who he should be rather than live up to someone else's legend - which is Venom dies bloody while Raiden continues to fight another day.
Solid Snake, more than any other Snake, embodies and carries on The Boss' will to a tee. While still a legendary soldier, Solid Snake nonetheless _ALWAYS_ fought to take down huge weapon advancements and secure peace for millions of civillian strangers, exactly what The Boss would've done. Venom did carry The Boss' loyalty, but he was loyal to a land of bloodshed and killing which The Boss was strongly _against,_ as opposed to Solid Snake's even greater loyalty to an ideal of peace and freedom.
Really, Solid Snake's final fights with Venom Snake and Big Boss were the final contests between who was the better soldier and the better suited to carrying The Boss' will. Thus, Solid winning proves he was the better soldier and brought The Boss' will to fruition.

I'm gonna be honest, i know nothing about Metal Gear. I started playing Ground Zeros and Phantom Pain because they were free on PlayStation, and the ending made me research about the first Metal Gear. I didn't research the other games because i still want to experience them all, but even knowing that Big Boss, Miller and Ocelot aren't exactly good guys, i feel very bad for Venom, and this made me cry. I know Quiet may be a hallucination, but i like to believe she isn't. Even knowing he isn't the real Big Boss, she just wants to be with him one last time and both of them meeting togheter and dying on the fire, Quiet's body purged of the virus and Ahab not having to carry the burden of being the Big Boss anymore, this really hit me. I still hope that one day Metal Gear may return to Kojima and he can make a proper ending for MGSV, but i also really would love for him to make this comic canon one day

I played MGS as a child and I loved it, enjoy the memories with my sister trying to defeat Liquid above Rex, it was really tough at that age.
Then MGS2 and 3. Later, with more conciousness, I played MGS once again without skipping the cinematic and..... OMG, I realized how different this game was compared to everything else, doing the same with MGS3 made me understand Big Boss a little bit, MGSV opened my eyes to what I've heard about MG and MG2, so I played and finished both recently.
And with MGS4 the end of Solid Snake and the rest of Big Boss from all of his sorrows to finally find somewhat of peace.
Peace Walker is the only left for me to play, but this saga is.... My childhood, my youth and part of my life, the characters history, their pain, their reasons, the music... Everything for what Metal Gear is so great, and now I understand the start and with this video, the end of that great circle of Metal Gear.
Thanks Hideo Kojima, for leave a mark in my life this way.

Man, watching this makes me wish Venom had a more on-screen personality. He is a really interesting character and plays into the lessons the first Metal Gear Solid games taught of trying to re-create a person through either genes or ideals, taking the face of genes and the memories of ideals. Combine that with the utter loyalty Venom has for Big Boss and he could have been a fantastic addition to the Snake line-up as well as highlighting how tragic the Metal Gear Franchise is. That we start off with a copy of Big Boss in phantom pain but he slowly begins to see through the cracks and falls part, only to arrive here as his choice of Big boss. Then dies at the hands of the Son of Big Boss

I'm not trying to cause a shit show but can someone explain this:
If venom snake was in outer heaven in south africa posing as big boss that means solid snake blew up venom snake with his missile launcher (which is the only real way to beat him) so the real big boss is in Zanzibar land but with cybernetic parts and almost machine for what reason if he wasn't blown up..? Even in the end of Mgs4 big boss explains to old snake the reason he's alive and in person is because the took parts from solidus and graphed it on him...
So if big boss wasn't blown up from the first metal gear game why is he missing limbs and burnt in game and lore?
