Always makes me a little sad that a lot of NOBOs never get to see the Smokies in all its glory. A month from now it will seem like a very different place. The wildflowers at lower elevations are starting to emerge and the hardwoods are just now leafing out. The alpine zones of the Whites are tough to compete with, but there are some amazing views to be had here. Unfortunately sometimes they are obscured by the weather that gives this place its name.
The AT is one of my least favorite trails in the Smokies. There are so many truly gorgeous, lush areas in the Smokies. I always encourage AT hikers to come back someday and explore some of the other trails.
The Narrows right after Double Spring headed toward Clingmans is some of the prettiest hiking in the Smokies. The old growth forest is like stepping into a different era. Good luck the rest of the way!
I’ve lived near & hiked both the Whites and The Smokies. I feel the two shouldn’t be compared as one is better than the other. Hiking the Whites this time of year is difficult at best. Also many of those mountains are above the alpine line and on a clear day you have an open view. The Smokies at this time of year is not its best time of year. The lower elevation is starting to wake up but the higher elevations have not even begun yet. Both are wonderful places to hike and camp but they are two very different ranges with their own unique features. As with the Whites there are many things that we don’t experience from the narrow space of one trail. Personally I wouldn’t compare them because of this. Stay safe & well Taylor!!
The Smokies are tough but there is so much more to them than the A.T. They are full of historical buildings , cemeteries and beautiful scenery and so many trails. I love hiking them.
I’ve only been to the Smokies and the Whites during nice weather. For most of the vlogs that I see, the hikers are in the Smokies during the early part of the year when it’s cold, foggy and rainy. Very gloomy indeed. They enter the Whites later in the year when the weather is more stable and the views are more clear and also they are nearing the end of their journey so their psychology is more up beat. I love both the Whites and the Smokies. I love the AT!
Thanks! Just a little something to help with the journey. I’m m a fan of the value for value model. I definitely find great value in your vids. Educational, informative, and motivational. 🤗
I went through there in mid April and it was amazing with all the white flowers covering everything for as far as you could see. I felt like I was in the wizard of OZ or something. I loved it. It was one of my favorite sections.
I am enjoying you videos ! I have maintained a 2 mile of the trail in NY. I plan on doing the trail but right now I am recovering from foot surgery on both. Its been over 6 months since my last surgery. Slowly getting back to walking a few miles a day. I AM NOT GOING TO PUSH IT !!!! I may do a few sections. I HOPE TAKE CARE ALL + HAPPY TRAILS TO ALL
ear plugs are a godsend when you sleep amongst snorers....and a lot of hikers snore and they always seem to sleep in shelters/huts when i do, ...but thats because im one of them, so now i carry extra ear plugs ..they weigh nothing and almost ensure that you dont get murdered in your sleep if you hand them out lol
I know everyone has the goal of pushing north and making miles towards the final destination in Maine, but occasional side trips would enrich the adventure. A trip just past Newfound Gap on the Boulevard trail to Mt LeConte could be worth your while, but it would be about a ten mile round trip. The views from atop there are spectacular. I was there last fall at peak color, but I imagine it would still be such at this time of year with just a different flavor. Enjoy your hike. Great videos. Thank you. Taylor.
I think you would enjoy the Smoky Mountains more if you hiked them during the summer or fall. The Smokies are known for having a very diverse ecosystem, there's lots of different plants to see at the various elevations. Either that or you are starting to enjoy your hostel visits more than the trail. 😆
really liking the short daily vlogs and appreciate the extra effort needed in editing daily , seem to see more natural features of the landscape at each stage and it is absolutely stunning so far. I'll never get to see it so this is the next best thing so thank you. totaly in ore of you guys camping with bears and rattle snakes 😯 i can only just cope with the midges in scotland 😂i did hear once "you will never progress staying in your comfort's zone" , maybe i should take heed
Hey Taylor! Shelters aren’t my fav, I’m glad you had a good sleep. Thanks for your insight on these sections of trail. I hope then next few sections have a little more payoff. Elevation gain with no view IMHO is the worst. 🙏 Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well. -Grateful
I went through them in 2019. You have to pay to hike through them and they really want you in the shelters because of the bears. The shelters get really full so you are crammed in like a sardine. At least one shelter is a literal fenced in cage. Some people arrive after dark expecting room in the shelter. Some people smoke. A lot of people snore. Some want to have a party at night. Some want to wake up at 0430 hours. Getting out of the Smokies was like I had been released. I was told that they were now using the Smokies to reintroduce wolves to the area. I will say one thing positive and that is the trail maintenance had the chainsaws buzzing to clear all the blow downs.
Great to see Gabby, I am following her utube channel this season and yours, of course. We used to get bears in our yards pretty regularly we had apple trees and they really enjoyed them. But they never became a threat. We left them alone, they left us alone, and they would always run off but also be curious, almost like they were lonely. 😊🐻 Also I love the Smokies, I think most through hikers go through there when it's very cold and probably a bit miserable and don't experience in the fall as much, come back in the fall.. you will fall in love. 🍂🍃🌾🍁
Ha ha - you're comment "almost like they were lonely" reminded me of the time a recent weanling came to our dining room window during dinner, just bawling and looking so sad and dejected. My kids were like "can we feed it", I'm like "NO, it's a BEAR, you are NOT going to feed it!". It wandered over to the stone wall between our side yard and front pasture, then when i went out the kitchen door to take a photo, one of the cats ran out and tried to run up to it. He was so scared he scrambled up the nearby apple tree. The cat just waited for him to come down. Eventually he fell out of the tree, and scampered off down the pasture, across the gravel road, and into the woods, cat in hot pursuit. Cat came back the next morning from the woods while I was waiting at the end of the driveway with kids for the school bus. I think perhaps they snuggled together for the night. Recently weaned bear cubs are always so lost, don't know what to do, don't know why mamma bear keeps swatting them away - I always feel so bad for them. But not bad enough to let the kids feed one... LOL I live in NH, and see bear all the time on my road, on my property, etc. Every dog I've ever had (no matter how small) could tree a bear in seconds, and my cat as well, so it always surprises me when someone from here is even the least bit afraid of black bears. They really want nothing to do with you, as long as you don't get between a mama and her cubs. I have no experience with wild boar, so THAT is what would scare me on the AT! 🤣
@Fluff BigRollingMarshmallow what a great story about your bear adventures. I did have one run right next to me one afternoon, I was on the bottom deck of our cabin watering plants, and heard a noice and a commotion, next thing I realized was it was a bear he ran right buy me I swear almost touching me as I realized what had just happened I saw this bear butt running off through our yard. My husband was on his computer one morning, looked out, and a bear was looking at him hahaha it scared him at first, and then he realized it was a teen bear. We have sold our cabin since then, and we are building a home where we probably won't see many bears maybe once in a while. But I kind of miss seeing them. 😀
Tne Smokies were an enjoyable section for me in May 1988 -- Lots of spring wildlife (waking up to the most beautiful bird song in America -- the Wood Thrush -- was exquisite), bears (and mice) were hungry but manageable, and there were very few other hikers to distract me. My 45 pound, low tech, exterior frame backpack (and tent) supplied me, without any luxuries, all the way to Hot Springs, NC. I never filtered or treated water. Almost every shelter was empty and I learned to think deeply (like Dorothy Laker) during my (1988-1991) solo hike to Maine. It was a REAL Adventure that will be a blessed part of me for as long as I live. Reply
I had just finished watching Gabby’s Vlog and then you posted this; I was wondering if you two would meet up somewhere on trail as it did seem that you were in the same area. Enjoying both your journeys.

In reference to the honey bun thing, I’ve found that they are an excellent cure for depression, and actually cause a mild state of euphoria! Two are even more effective! Ha! When you cook the Knorr sides, do you cook it in your JetBoil, or in the pouch? The thing that’s always kept me from using the Knorr stuff is the convenience of typical backpack meals that you mix up in the pouch, seal it up to simmer, then when you’re finished eating just zip the bag up and you’re done! The only cleanup is the spoon! The Knorr pouches have always appeared too small and thin to do the cook in bag thing!
The Smokies had 14 million visitors last year -overcrowded beyond compare, it's location is near several urban area + Spring Break! I totally understand your take.

I have to agree with you on the Smoky mnts. By far my least favorite part of the trail. Maybe I would have enjoyed them more if I didn’t endure 5 days of torrential rain…..lol.
Once you get out of the Smokey’s it should be better. Yes, bears are waking up, but all good. Did you run into any last time? I never saw you run into any on last trek. Thank you

I agree. The Smokies are best in the fall imo. Winter is good too if that's your thing. Nobo in the bubble is dreary.
The AT is one of my least favorite trails in the Smokies. There are so many truly gorgeous, lush areas in the Smokies. I always encourage AT hikers to come back someday and explore some of the other trails.
How awesome you met up with Gabby. Been following her since last year. Enjoy the smokies 🌻🌻
Wow, when you panned to the tent set up smack in the middle of the shelter I was hollering "WHAT?!"
Me too lol
The Narrows right after Double Spring headed toward Clingmans is some of the prettiest hiking in the Smokies. The old growth forest is like stepping into a different era. Good luck the rest of the way!
It's always fun to see hikers who are vloggers interact. Adds even more to the content. - Peace and sparkling paths.

It's wild that you feel that way, the smokies ended up being a favorite for me. Though to be fair that didn't happen until I reached clingmans dome.
Funny, you and Gabby are the only two AT hikers I'm following this year. I watched y'all getting closer and wondered if you would meet.
You’ve got this . I hope you get some bright skies tomorrow
So glad you met Gabby. She is a very sweet young lady and I am praying she makes it all the way this year. Stay safe and warm Happy Hiking 🏕🥾💞
Thanks for the reply, enjoying your Vlog.

I watch Gabi! Great that both of you were together.
I follow Gabby also, was thinking you two might run into each other. Nice too see you guy's did. Have a safe and Fun hike!!
I love this hike for sunrise!!
Views are always great but it is the people who I remember the most of the trail good and bad, enjoy
Thanks for the Smokies warning :) I HAVE to know if I’ll be bored. I’ll plan good, inspiring snacks 😂

I cannot imagine how amazing it must have been to hike back then, before the trails became overpopulated and incredibly accessible.
Good video, with some good views, still a lot of ice and snow on the mountain side, so let's keep on hiking..😅
Oh no! I fell down!🤣🤣🤣
Awesome that you guys linked up! Funny how the trail works sometimes.
Bummer to see someone set a tent up in the shelter. Not cool. I'm enjoying your videos! Boots north!!
Thanks
I had just finished watching Gabby’s Vlog and then you posted this; I was wondering if you two would meet up somewhere on trail as it did seem that you were in the same area. Enjoying both your journeys.

I watch Gabby too! I was actually wondering if you two will meet on trail 🎉
I gotta disagree with you on this one buddy…I think the entire Smokey section was a sight to behold!
I've never hiked the smokies with you, maybe that's why it was boring

I would think thru-hiking in general is very boring (at times), just like in real life. But you’re on a unique journey and that makes it exciting too.
Good assessment. Even when it’s somewhat boring, you’re still making progress!

Did I see a tent inside that shelter?
Is that someone set up inside the shelter at the very end?!
It is an extensive contiguous mountain chain. Woods animals. Bear habitat in the eastern United States.
Is your New Hampshire jealousy coming out? Is it because The Great Smokey Mountains are the most visited National Park in the country? Or is it because
Clingman Mountain ( Clingsmans Dome ) is taller than Mount Washington?
Lol I'm definitely not jealous of the smokies

Aww! Why does everybody always hate on the Smokies?! (My home turf) ☹️🙃 The views get pretty epic after Newfound Gap. But the primary thing about the Smokies is the biodiversity. It’s incredibly complex and rare. Also, it’s known for its many creeks and cascades, which are lovely. But you don’t see those on the AT.
Tent inside the shelter taking up loads of space. Atypical?
Yeah, not my favorite move
It is frowned upon, especially when a good number of people expect to sleep in the shelter.
I more afraid of mice than bears
Oh, absolutely. Besides chewing your gear, running across your face at night, they carry disease.
I'm way more afraid of ticks and Spyder bites than mice or bears.
On my 94' ThruHike I never saw a single bear! Weird, huh?
I wish I could find a high protein peanut butter to always keep packed.
